To not want mismatched mugs?

Just a lighthearted one really, but why would people buy random mugs as gifts? I can’t undertand wanting a mug bag doesn’t match anything else. All of my crockery must match. Are other people hoarding mismatched mugs and cups at home?? Are people doing this on purpose? Also cushions! Why would someone buy a random cushion for someone’s house that doesn’t match anything else? This happens all the time in my friendship group. Shouldn’t cushions match the sofa exactly? Can’t stand it!!! AIBU?

I have different mugs for different things. I use big stoneware bucket mugs for coffee, thin china mugs for tea, glass/pyrex mugs for herbal tea, my espresso cups do sort of match my big coffee mugs, entirely accidentally.

Krisskrosskiss · 24/08/2019 01:55

I cannot stand matching things. Everything in my home is purposefully mismatched... except shoes I guess lol. But mugs... I cannot have two the same... even plates have to be all different. I do think I have two cushions the same but they are in different rooms so I deal with it Haha...

1forAll74 · 24/08/2019 01:59

Allmy seven mugs are from charity shops. bought mainly at odd times over a couple of years. But they must have a bird of some sort on them, my favourite one has a chicken on it. The only odd one I have,is one I bought for my daughter ages ago,,she is 44 now,,but when she was a youngie, she loved having a lot of shoes,,so got a china mug with shoes on,, like all coloured shoes, a pink stiletto, a blue sparkly wedge type shoe, and other weird shoes.. When I gave it to her, she said,, Oh Mum, what were you thinking, I can't possibly have that mug in my kitchen these day ha ha.

WipeYourFeetOnTheRhythmRug · 24/08/2019 02:05

I don’t suppose yabu as it’s your house. But it sounds very bland.

HighNetGirth · 24/08/2019 02:11

OP, your ultimate nightmare crockery:

ReanimatedSGB · 24/08/2019 02:11

Blimey, nothing matches in our house. Some of the mugs I have are gifts or souvenirs from events (I do have to sort them out into 'suitable for visitors' and 'sweary or got pictures of bums on). Our plates and cutlery don't match, either, as some are oddments from old sets passed on by my mum, some were picked up incomplete from boot sales or vintage fairs, and some were grabbed at random from the pound shop when I realised we had no proper soup bowls or whatever.

HighNetGirth · 24/08/2019 02:14

Dammit! Try again:

somewhere,in the cupboard thats rarely opened i have 6 identicle mugs.possibly as many as three matching plates too.(toot da root=own trumpet)...i live with ds2. neither of us like t or coffee.or care about crockery. we are possibly odd on ..several levels..we both have our own "favourite"cups..in fact i even have a cup\saucer thats "granmas"... as is often me,ds2 (and his friends)my sofa cushions have to behind the walls of a sofa fort, and the throws...get thrown-over the top.i drew the line at his request to remove the door and rehinge so entry to (lived in)living room was "like a drawbridge"..despite them drawing plans to accompany the request..possibly that refusal was said plans also included a "fire moat"which looked likely to include the stairs in the hall

Disfordarkchocolate · 24/08/2019 03:05

I like sets of three so you have a range that fits your mood/beverage/looks nice in the kitchen.

Bloodybridget · 24/08/2019 03:46

If my mugs all matched I'd feel as though I was living in a hotel. I like choosing the mug for the drink/occasion/mood.

k1233 · 24/08/2019 03:59

How does this rock your boat cloudyyy. I was given mugs for a secret Santa present at work once. They matched, but it was a "set" of 3. 3 I tell you! One, I would have loved. 2's a pair. 4's a set. 3 is absolutely nothing. Who gives three cups??!!

DefinatelyAWeeGobshite · 24/08/2019 04:14

YABU! I adore mugs, I’ve got two shelves of them and no two are the same. Everytime we’re out shopping my husband casually nudges me away from new mugs Grin

k1233 · 24/08/2019 04:45

Oh highnetgirth, if someone is going to the trouble of joining photos, they could at least line the edges up - oh lordy me, I so badly want to fix that picture LOL

k1233 · 24/08/2019 05:06

Must admit, I have matching and mismatched cups. When I moved into my current place I cleaned out the mug cupboard and reduced to under 20. A set of 8, 2sets of 4 and a couple of mismatched ones that were gifts. The aforementioned set if three was turfed. Everytime I saw it I was pissed off.

A pic of my kitchen after I'd done a touch of washing up. Bet you can't pick my favourite colour LOL

Nacreous · 24/08/2019 05:08

The thought of having matching mugs mildly horrifies me.

Same for cushions. My cushions "go" - they are a variety of blues, with different abstract prints, but they all work together. One was bought by my great granny when she was still alive, another was made by my grandma, the throw was the first quilt I made and is a riot of blues and pinks and purples and oranges and green (but I promise the colours all work together)! I currently have two matching sofas as a friend of a friend was getting rid of them when I needed them, but if I had my own way the sofas wouldn't match either.

Other than my two grandmas, I can't think of anyone I know who would want all their things to match, so it's never occurred to me that those would be something I should avoiding giving as a present if I thought the recipient would like it and it fitted their style.

TheSerenDipitY · 24/08/2019 05:58

my husband brings them home, gifts from suppliers, i do a clean up every so often and toss them or take them to the cow shed, and we start the process over again, he brings them, i toss them

HermioneWeasley · 24/08/2019 06:07

I have a set of matching mugs which I never use because I need a certain size and shape for different drinks, and I enjoy using ones I’ve bought on our travels and are meaningful to me.

NoSauce · 24/08/2019 06:08

I can’t stand matching mugs. It’s all very Next.

Vasya · 24/08/2019 06:19

I have a set of matched mugs and a set of matched cups for visitors, and then I have several pairs of mugs that my husband and I use, and then I have a handful of individual mugs that are either particularly beautiful or have sentimental value.

(Yes, I have far too many)

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 24/08/2019 06:25

Are you my MIL? She was literally horrified at the mismatched vintage crockery at a cafe the other day. She kept pointing the fact to me in a guilty whisper when she thought the staff were out of earshot Grin I kept explaining it was done on purpose and I could see she thought I was being silly Grin

Matching things makes me cringe! Sorry OP. Each to their own. Enjoy having your house to your taste and sod everyone else.

Teacakeandalatte · 24/08/2019 06:33

Love having a collection of different mugs with interesting pictures and things. I like going to the Garden centre for a browse round the mugs too.
I just think of mugs as a sort of homely casual thing not like a fancy dinner service so there is no need to match. Plus it's nice to have your own mug with a favourite picture on it.

Curlyshabtree · 24/08/2019 06:42

Matching mugs are dull! I like an eclectic mix of everything crockery related and beyond.

NewMum54321 · 24/08/2019 06:42

@RainingFrogsAndHats
I’ve NEVER brought anything for someone with the thought that "hmmm, their living room is teal, now what "teal" things can I find?"

My MIL does this! I painted some of the furniture in baby’s nursery green and she bought about twenty things before he was born which were all green... simply because they were green. She must hate me because I then bought him a yellow lampshade and a blue pouffe...

OP, I agree with you. I HATE matchy matchy but would never buy something for someone who liked that (such as MIL!) which didn’t match. Her mugs are all white and she gradually loses the random ones people buy her for Christmas etc.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 24/08/2019 06:43

What do you do if you break one and can't get a replacement?

We used to have matching plates, bowls, cups etc. However I can trip over fresh air. DH is heavy handed. DD1 is accident prone. DD2 is enthusiastic and acts without thinking. We have a lot of broken things so no none of the every day stuff matches.
I do have a posh set for visitors. DDs don't help with the washing up those days.

NewMum54321 · 24/08/2019 06:44

I can’t stand matching mugs. It’s all very Next.

I find that matchy people do tend to also recreate next catalogue pages at home.
