Ryan Air - What the hell??

FlioFlopsAndIceCream · 22/08/2019 20:25

Just checked in for our flights on Monday and Ryan Air have allocated 3 seats next to each (me, and 2 DCs), then husband has to pay extra for his seat (apparantly this is a thing now, that one parent in every family has to pay for a seat(??wtf?) - except there aren't any seats near the rest of us???

What is this Ryan Air??? Surely you can seat families together?

A complete joke. I'm fuming.... we've been looking forward to this trip for ages.

Ryan Air - thanks a million for getting our holiday off to a shit start Angry

(I can almost let them off making DH pay, but surely they can at least allocate families to sit together??? CRAZY times)

(Sorry, I know we r lucky to be going on holiday! first world problem.)

McDonalds has much better customer service & is better value than many of the hipster joints selling burgers for £10 that also comes in paper & without cutlery.

IAmALazyArse · 23/08/2019 08:31

Maybe you are right and it is a perfectly fair way to make money.

It is fair. It would be unfair the moment you had no other choices. There is 37 airlines operating from Manchester. Over 70 from Heathrow. Plenty of choice.

ContinuityError · 23/08/2019 08:32

Just checked in for our flights on Monday

Hmmm - Monday is more than 48 hours away, isn’t it?

eeksville · 23/08/2019 08:35

Also McDonalds gives you lots of dips for free as opposed to charging for it in more expensive places.

MissClareRemembers · 23/08/2019 08:36

Quote from O’Leary;

Ryanair will never fly the Atlantic route because one cannot get there in a Boeing 737, unless one has a very strong tail wind or passengers who can swim the last hour of the flight.”

Change “Ryanair” to “MJN” and that’s comedy genius right there!

They say that. Every single time we went through drive through, we never got them😂

CoffeenWalnut · 23/08/2019 08:51

@ContinuityError
"Just checked in for our flights on Monday

@ poolblack

"I really want OP to come back and tell us more about rows of 4 seats on Ryanair...

I think it's unlikely. There are too many incorrect details that point towards this being more of a rant about Ryanair than an actual situation."

At keast the two of you seem to be flying the same Ryanair as I do.... someone upthread claims to have already checked in with Ryanair "for next week".... unless they count Sunday as next week (and even then it's a stretch) they have checked in before the 48 hour allocated slot so must have paid extra - or are living in a parallel universe.

eeksville · 23/08/2019 08:55

But if you ask for them at the drive thru they tend to throw 20 at you, I think it's because they are working so fast & that way at least some will end up the car!

IAmALazyArse · 23/08/2019 08:57

Not where I am. Never ever have I had sauces I ordered🤷

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/08/2019 08:58

I'm not even going to read the thread because it's true, Ryanair deliberately split passengers on purpose. Both flights we took recently dh was given a seat in one part of the airplane up the front steps and me another part, up the back steps. We checked in to the minute 48 hours ahead. There were oodles of seats available. Their algorithm deliberately splits people up.

The CAA say this is a dangerous practice in the event of an emergency. Families will naturally try and reunite rather than evacuate as they should.

Even a 30 second hesitation by a child or young teen wanting to get to their Mum or Dad would cause potentially catastrophic delays in an evacuation.

ContinuityError · 23/08/2019 08:59

And OP never did come back to say how long the flight is ...

eeksville · 23/08/2019 09:00

Have you asked at the window though when you pay?

Ive visited drive throughs in Ireland, England & France & the only issue Ive ever had was trying to explain what sweet & sour sauce was to the French ones, it's chinoise but I would recommend the pomme frite sauce.

IAmALazyArse · 23/08/2019 09:03

@eeksville
I've literally just said I don't get even the ones I specifically ordered🙄
Ok. Ok. Maccies is better. You win fgs

eeksville · 23/08/2019 09:08

Not getting the ones you ordered is not the same as asking & being refused though is it?

I wasn't aware it was a competition but ok...

FredaFrogspawn · 23/08/2019 09:11

That sums it up with clarity, @ohyoubadkitten

Roussette · 23/08/2019 09:22

I think this quote from Michael O'Leary (Owner of Ryanair) is rather apt at the moment. (p.s. I like Harry & MM)

On environmentalists: “We want to annoy the * whenever we can. The best thing you can do with environmentalists is shoot them. These headbangers want to make air travel the preserve of the rich. They are luddites marching us back to the 18th century. If preserving the environment means stopping poor people flying so the rich can fly, then screw it.”

FredaFrogspawn · 23/08/2019 09:26

That’s the tension in the whole thing - cheap flights opening travel to more people vs expensive flights for the privileged few.

Same as cheap chicken for the masses vs humanely produced chicken for the better off.

There are no answers which are fair, but I would rather fly less and eat less chicken but do the whole lot as ethically as possible. However, I do recognise that I’m lucky enough to be speaking as an employed person with some disposable income.

HappyParent2000 · 23/08/2019 09:28

I found Ryanair better than EasyJet on our last holiday. I was super impressed with their service for what I paid.

I wouldn’t hesitate to book with them again, EasyJet... would hesitate depending on price.

I don’t get all the Ryanair hate, when you book with them you must know what your getting in for. They just don’t do frills, in all areas! I like it that way and love the price it results in.

eeksville · 23/08/2019 09:32

I have to say when I was in my tweens/teens (90s) I used to think flying was so glamorous. I find it such a faff now, all the getting to & from the airport, waiting around, security undressing, little plastic bags, queues, queues & more queues. I've started using the ferry again now I have my own kids & it's much more stress free but obviously limited destinations.

User478 · 23/08/2019 09:36

Next time, do two bookings, you and one DC, DH and other DC then you will have 2 twos.

familycourtq · 23/08/2019 09:43

I don’t get all the Ryanair hate, when you book with them you must know what your getting in for.
Exactly - one year I took mor than 80 flights on Ryanair for work - they were fine. All the issues I had were caused by the shit airport.

shearwater · 23/08/2019 15:21

I don’t get all the Ryanair hate

There was a timely announcement today. Ryanair rated the worst company for customer service. Not just the worst airline, the worst company.

justmakeitbetter · 23/08/2019 15:24

Oh I hate this! Just ask the person sitting in the 4th row with you to swap with your OH, that’s what I do. With 2 kids it’s not like they’re going to say no. Grin

whothedaddy · 23/08/2019 15:28

pretty sure all airlines do this.

We flew to California last summer. DD was automatically sat next to 1 parent. Had to pay extra if we wanted to sit with OH too. Didn't bother, on the same plane so he could still help out if needed- he didn't as it happens DD was 8. This was with Virgin

We fly with easy jet on Monday- same thing. I'm sat with DD, OH is elsewhere.
flew to amsterdam and stockholm earlier this year just me and DD so no issue as automatically just sat with me (the adult)

It does make me snigger when people post these types of things. The company told you the deal when you booked, you pomposly thought it didn't apply to you, now you complain [HMM]

nornironrock · 23/08/2019 16:00

Obviously tldr.

This is just the latest in a long line of threads complaining about Ryanair.

The simple truth is that if you keep flying with them, they will keep behaving in this way.

I simply will not fly with them, precisely for this reason. I'd rather go somewhere else, or at a different time. Or, heaven forbid, pay for a better standard of service. If we can afford to go on a holiday (family of four - never cheap) we can afford to do it without entering the seventh circle of hell - deliberately!!!
