Ryan Air - What the hell??

FlioFlopsAndIceCream · 22/08/2019 20:25

Just checked in for our flights on Monday and Ryan Air have allocated 3 seats next to each (me, and 2 DCs), then husband has to pay extra for his seat (apparantly this is a thing now, that one parent in every family has to pay for a seat(??wtf?) - except there aren't any seats near the rest of us???

What is this Ryan Air??? Surely you can seat families together?

A complete joke. I'm fuming.... we've been looking forward to this trip for ages.

Ryan Air - thanks a million for getting our holiday off to a shit start Angry

(I can almost let them off making DH pay, but surely they can at least allocate families to sit together??? CRAZY times)

(Sorry, I know we r lucky to be going on holiday! first world problem.)

Their policy of random seating is a complete money making scam, however, on a tui expensive holiday earlier this year I had to pay over £100 for family to sit together so it actually is generous of ryanair to even offer 1 parent. It appears the norm now on many airlines. I dont get how people are ok with it, if I paid for two train tickets they wouldn't automatically allocate seats at opposite ends of the train.

TSSDNCOP · 22/08/2019 22:30

So, it’s true, there are in remote corners of the travelling earth, people that still cannot read the Ryanair booking conditions.

Ilikethisone · 22/08/2019 22:31

It's not a scam. Because that's exactly their business plan.

All you get for the base price is a seat on that plane. That's it. You want more than that, you pay for it.

Therefore, it's not a scam. It's what they are known for and exactly what they advertise.

ContinuityError · 22/08/2019 22:32

EasyJet will sit you together if you book in early enough - check in opens 30 days ahead of your flight.

Ryanair - if you haven’t paid for seat allocations you can only check in 4 days ahead (but you can check in for your return flight at the same time if it’s up to 15 days ahead).

IAmALazyArse · 22/08/2019 22:34

If you go for the rock bottom fare you can only check in within 48 hours of take off...

That's actually a good point

ContinuityError · 22/08/2019 22:37

Roussette I don’t think people appreciate how the EU single market for aviation has made flights so cheap - it enabled low cost operators like Ryanair and EasyJet to open up and drive down flight prices.

Saddler · 22/08/2019 22:37

You ever flown before?

Josephinebettany · 22/08/2019 22:38

How is your holiday "off to a shit start" just because your husband is sitting with you? It's just a flight. You'll see him again when you get off. As long as your children are with a parent I don't see the problem.

poolblack · 22/08/2019 22:42

You ever flown before?

I don't think OP is even flying now tbh.

The thread is just a slur against Ryanair.

BritInUS1 · 22/08/2019 22:46

YABU - it's a well known fact that all airlines do this

Either pay and sit together or suck it up. At least you and the children are in the same row, as they don't have to do that either, just put them near you

ContinuityError · 22/08/2019 22:49

So, OP, how long is the flight?

megletthesecond · 22/08/2019 22:50

I haven't been on a plane for over 10 years and even I knew this. Have you been under a rock Hmm. Ryan Air appears cheap for a reason.

poolblack · 22/08/2019 22:50

Ryanair - if you haven’t paid for seat allocations you can only check in 4 days ahead

It's 48 hours. Not 4 days.

areukiddingme · 22/08/2019 22:52

FFS, how many times do people have to be told, if you want to sit together PAY for it like everyone else does and don’t expect it just because you have kids.

B3ck89 · 22/08/2019 22:59

Your being way over dramatic, how can being seated separately on a flight get your holiday off to a shit start Hmm

As long as I’m sat with my kids I couldn’t give a stuff what end of the plane my DP is at... I would either be watching a film or just relaxing, so unless you have to have help with your child (especially if little ones have SN) then i don’t understand the issue?
Even then, you would make sure you pay the extra to be seated together

AlexaAmbidextra · 22/08/2019 23:00

my pilot friend always wears cargo pants so that he has his passport, phone and wallet in his pockets.

Not much use if he’s burned to a crisp.

crazycatgal · 22/08/2019 23:00

Instead of acting entitled expecting special treatment you should pay to sit together like everyone else does.

ContinuityError · 22/08/2019 23:03

poolblack You’re right - sorry, used to be 4 days and now it’s 48 hrs.

pumkinspicetime · 22/08/2019 23:08

I won't pay extra so my dc are used to being sat close but not beside me if we are traveling economy. But they are old (10) enough this isn't an issue.
A perfect start to a holiday might be to have dh and dc altogether and me at other side of the plane.

ContinuityError · 22/08/2019 23:15

AlexaAmbidextra but if it is an emergency landing where you can escape then you have the bare essentials to make life easier with you and not in handbags / backpacks etc that you can’t take with you.

It’s pretty basic really. Even if most people don’t want to think about it.

Another reason why you should always pay attention to the safety briefing even if you’ve heard it dozens of times before.

If I’m burnt to a crisp then my dental records will do the job quite nicely I’m sure.

ilovesooty · 22/08/2019 23:32

I'm flying with Ryanair on Monday. It's a longish flight by their standards so I booked and paid for a seat. Your children aren't sitting away from a parent so if you want to sit all together you pay like others do.

elessar · 23/08/2019 00:04

What I find ridiculous is that the OP thinks that the rules should be different just for families - bearing in mind she's already seated with her two children, there's zero need for the husband to be there as well.

Why should families get extra preferential treatment where all the group is seated together, not just one parent with the children, ahead of couples or friends? Do they have less right to want to be with each other?

TheYeaSayer · 23/08/2019 00:13

We have Ryanair flights next week. I didn’t pay for seats (never do) but when I checked in we were all put together anyway. Guess we got lucky!
If there are 4 seats together it’s bloody mindedness of them to split a group up.

And a PP is correct: it wouldn’t be paying for one seat, it’d be paying for 4.

poolblack · 23/08/2019 00:25

You certainly did. I'm surprised it let you check in.

LiveInAHidingPlace · 23/08/2019 00:42

You're going on a lovely holiday but all you can do is moan about it not being perfectly to your taste.

Just get on with it. It's not that big a thing.
