IShitGlitter · 22/08/2019 17:42

We have just booked our first abroad holiday with the kids to lanazrote. Weve been aboard loads but weve not taken the plunge with the kids yet......anyway

AIBU to want a double buggy to take for my DD3 DS5 (ages when we go) am thinking at the end of the day he will be shatterd after pool fun evening entertainment ect. Just to be clear he is a fantastic walker and walks everywhere normally.

so AIBU putting my 5 year old in a buggy

It really is no one else’s business

I mean I remember seeing children too old in pushchairs whilst I was on holiday but can I remember their faces? Their parents faces?

No!!

Occasionally I even saw a child completely zonked out laid down in their younger siblings pushchair and all I thought was “what a good idea!”

NoSauce · 22/08/2019 20:25

MRex the OP asked the question though, it would be weirder for posters to lie and say yes it’s fine Confused

LittleFairywren · 22/08/2019 20:25

I wouldn't take a buggy at all. A 3 year old assuming no disabilities should be walking pretty much everywhere.

june2007 · 22/08/2019 20:29

No I wouldn't if child is that tired, go home to bed. A buggy board might be a good idea.

user1494670108 · 22/08/2019 20:32

We've been to Lanzarote many times, at that age we took scooters, they scooted into town and we taxied home

MaybeitsMaybelline · 22/08/2019 20:35

5? DS has been at school a year at 5. Buggy - whoa 😲 not a chance.

Rubicon80 · 22/08/2019 20:44

@MRex It's weird that some people are so worried about a random 5 year old in a pushchair for a week.

I don't think that anyone is 'worried' but OP asked if she WBU.

there are people on this thread putting 6- and 7-year-olds (with no disabilities) in buggies. That's just bizarre and unhealthy.

Chloe9 · 22/08/2019 20:53

I wouldn't bother I'd get a single buggy they both fit in and can take turns. It's unlikely they'll both be overly tired at the same time.

I got rid of the buggy at age 3 though so probably wouldn't bother bringing one at all but mine are incredibly good walkers and I get them walking a lot from about age 2. I do know that a lot of people still use them for preschool year though so I guess some kids are nearly five then.

Flamingosnbears · 22/08/2019 21:04

Go on amazon and look for a pull along wagon to put children in they're fantastic for what you want and the kids will have fun sat in it!

BitOftheSea · 22/08/2019 21:09

Those pull along wagons are brilliant, basically all Belgians have them. You can stick all your beach stuff and a sleepy child in them Grin

JudgeRindersMinder · 22/08/2019 21:11

YANBU at all. We took the “holiday buggy” till ds was 6, and used it in exactly the way you’re speaking about.

We may also have used it during the day to do a beer run to the supermarket 😂

ImTheCaddy · 22/08/2019 21:12

Old Phil and teds. I've had two 5 year olds in one and it's a bit of a squash but it's ok. Plus won't look so strange pushing it round with just your 3yo in it

PrincesTippeyToes · 22/08/2019 23:18

Hi There,
I am a frequent flyer with my 5 year old daughter . I recommend popping on ebay and grab your self the Out and About Nipper Double(outnabout.com/nipper-double#video_double). Its has a fab max weight load. I still use mine as I run 10km daily. The other option if you only want a single buggy with additional board /tow seat or buggy side seat (this clips on the side of the pushchair then try the Silver Cross Reflex. This pushchair can carry children up to 45kg. Goodluck and enjoy your holiday😊

Saracen · 23/08/2019 07:12

YANBU for putting a 5yo in a buggy, but a double buggy will be awkward. There's a good chance that one or other of the kids will be able to walk. So he can take turns with the 3yo, or when that isn't possible then one of you can carry the 3yo while the other pushes the 5yo.

Have a great holiday!!

Greggers2017 · 23/08/2019 07:25

Just get one if you want to. It's great for little ones to sleep in on an evening of they're tired whilst out.
It's not the same as being at home at all. We aren't regularly out until 10, 11 when there. It's everybodies holiday so you don't want to
Be sat in a hotel room in an evening just because your child is tired. We go out for
Drinks and food in an evening and often watch live music until late. When the kids were younger they slept on buggies. Will be doing the same with the baby.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 23/08/2019 07:30

I stopped taking a buggy abroad when DS was 3!

I don't sit out late in the evenings with him though to be fair as I don't like it but at 5 I'd expect him to be able to walk. I don't own a car so we are used to a fair bit of walking.

IShitGlitter · 23/08/2019 08:52

theres a hire company on the island that hire out double buggys and other various things. Its only €40 am going to enquire which type they have.

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 23/08/2019 09:06

I’d do it op. Anything to make life easier in the heat.

A friend of mine went to Disney this year and bought her 6 year old a buggy because of the heat and walking.

PrincesTippeyToes · 23/08/2019 09:33

Whatever double buggie they will have will almost certainly suit for your two children. Get them to send you a picture and then you can look up the specifications online. Goodluck. And I agree with Greggers2017. The holiday can be enjoyed and no need to sit in your room. There will be no longterm damaged caused mentally or physically if your children stay out with you and fall asleep in the buggy😉

MRex · 23/08/2019 09:42

Everyone getting a taxi rather than the kids being pushed late at night is the most ridiculous suggestion. Plus, carrying 2 car seats alongside other stuff without a pushchair would just be unpleasant.

Soubriquet · 23/08/2019 09:52

Yeah....

DO NOT PUT YOUR FIVE YEAR OLD IN A BUGGY!!!

Use a taxi instead.....Hmm

Which one is more environmentally friendly

Areyoufree · 23/08/2019 09:56

Bah. All these people saying that their children refused to use buggies from two. Mine would still use one now, if I'd let them (5 and 7)! And we always walked everywhere - they just refused to walk most of the time. Made life very difficult, as I would be dragging / cajoling a reluctant child / children with me. The eldest is getting better, and will tend to walk without too much fuss, the the youngest still wants to be carried all of the time (although we mostly refuse to). You know your kids, do what works for you.

SudowoodoVoodoo · 23/08/2019 10:09

Most 5 yos are too long or too heavy for cheaper lightweight stroller type buggies. The larger 3 wheel off road types are a better fit, but harder to travel with, and it seems a gamble to buy a large, awkward piece of equipment that may or may not be useful for one week.

Saying that, at 2 & 4, I bought a second hand tandem for a week at a major scout camp. The site was a mile long and there was no way to guarentee that they would both be fresh to walk that far up/ downhill, at a sensible pace every time it was needed. No taxi avaliable as a back up! I'd managed until that point with a single and carrier, but the ground was too rough and other people not used to carrying young children were involved too so my usual methods didn't work.

stucknoue · 23/08/2019 10:09

Sounds very sensible, I did it as long as I could (mine were petite)

YorkshireSyn · 23/08/2019 11:19

Forget the negativity. I totally understand your reasoning. Might be worth visiting a few places to try them for size. You might struggle for a double but certainly worth look at your options. Holidays can be long days and our littles certainly need a place to rest after a busy day with you as a family sacrificing an evening meal or even a bit of entertainment
