We have just booked our first abroad holiday with the kids to lanazrote. Weve been aboard loads but weve not taken the plunge with the kids yet......anyway

AIBU to want a double buggy to take for my DD3 DS5 (ages when we go) am thinking at the end of the day he will be shatterd after pool fun evening entertainment ect. Just to be clear he is a fantastic walker and walks everywhere normally.

so AIBU putting my 5 year old in a buggy

Personally, I don’t think a 5yo should be in a buggy. Sounds like your dc can manage a 10 min walk but if you really think it’ll make your life easier then do what you want!

NoNoNoOohmaybe · 22/08/2019 19:25

How big is he? We've a double mountain buggy we used for our 4 year olds at festivals this summer. Much easier to manoeuvre than those festival trucks.

However mine are small for their age and it is a beast and awkward to store/move about when folded.

HJWT · 22/08/2019 19:26

You will struggle finding a double buggy to fit a 5 year old, what about a buggy board?

KB197 · 22/08/2019 19:29

Your holiday so do what’s best for you. I mean would anyone bat an eyelid at a child in an. Stroller on holiday, I wouldn’t? I rember going abroad when I was about 11 and my brother was 6 and my parents wanted to stay out in the evening but he couldn’t stay awake so they hired a buggy he could rest and snooze in!

Five year olds are only little, kids get tired particularly on holiday so I’d say do it.

DD is 4 and we still have to use one. She does have problems with her joints and needs it for long walks but I do get odd looks but who cares?

Mummyshark2019 · 22/08/2019 19:29

We took a stroller with us to LA Disneyland when ours was four. But a big four. He only used it in the evening as was shattered. Take it. You know your child better. If you think k he will fit and be tired, then take the stroller.

Minai · 22/08/2019 19:31

I wouldn’t. Double buggies are such a pain. I have one out of necessity as I have an 8 month old and a 2 year old (who runs off) and the thought of still having to use it when they are 3 and 5 fills me with horror! I’d take a single and let them take turns if it was me.

Anotherdayanotherdollar · 22/08/2019 19:33

Lanzarote is very hilly from what I remember. I struggled to carry my own weight up those hills, nevermind pushing two kids and the weight of the buggy too! I'd take a single and takes turns as needed. Most cheap strollers have dodgy wheels and would take quite a hit with the weight of older children surely?

FurrySlipperBoots · 22/08/2019 19:35

I think it's bizarre to consider a buggy for a healthy 5 year old. Just jolly him along if he's tired with telling stories, playing 'Would you rather/I-Spy/20 questions' type games, or get one of those kids cases that doubles as a scooter.

MummyDummyNow · 22/08/2019 19:36

I wouldn't put a 3 year old in a buggy never mind a 5 year old! I can't believe any 5 year old would want to go in one!

GlamourBear · 22/08/2019 19:43

Even our 2 year old (while we were there) surprised us last year with how well he did in the evenings. We had the pushchair with us but we rarely used it in the evenings, he walked or we would carry him back to the room if he was super tired. Perhaps a buggy board as suggested by others?

BertieBotts · 22/08/2019 19:46

Take a single. Give one child a piggyback if both are tired.

Maryann1975 · 22/08/2019 19:47

Double buggies are generally massive and would be such a pain to manoeuvre in the majority of holiday places. Take a single and let them take turns or get a buggy board. Can you give one of them a piggy back? This is what we’ve done with 5 year olds.

We’ve always had excellent success with a 5pm nap though. Come in from the pool, shower, lay on the beds and everyone has a nap for an hour or two before going out for tea. Ensured everyone can manage an extra few hours in the evening. It’s never interfered with bed time either, come home from the bar and straight to bed.

Stompythedinosaur · 22/08/2019 19:48

I would do the same. We had a double buggy for holidays or big days out (e.g. theme parks) for years after we didn't use one in our regular life.

Siameasy · 22/08/2019 19:49

Yanbu. We are taking 4.5 year old to Disney and the buggy is coming. I’d do the same in your boat. It’s hot and they’ll be running around all day; they’ll be shattered. We used to enjoy her passing out in the buggy after dinner on hols and DH and I could go for a walk and have an ice cream AND NOT SHARE IT WITH A CHILD!!!!

filka · 22/08/2019 19:54

We just gave up a buggy for our 6yo because he was too heavy and the wheels didn't turn.

He went on a day trip to London with my wife and 15yo DD, came back at midnight bright as a button.

I would take a (very) lightweight buggy for the 3yo and have the 5yo walk, whatever the time.

It's not really a question of YABU/YANBU, but practicality. I would say it is impractical to take a double buggy for a 5yo.

cocomelon23 · 22/08/2019 19:55

No way. Not for a 5 year old!

TerribleCustomerCervix · 22/08/2019 19:59

My parents used to borrow our childminders mclaren double buggy to take on holidays until my twin and I were about six.

Never used it during the day, but they’d bring it with us when we headed out for dinner. Sister and I would clamber into it when we got sleepy, meaning mum and dad could finish their drinks/ meal without having to worry about us being overtired and grumpy. Then they’d push us back to the hotel already asleep.

If you were considering it for use during home I’d say YABU, but a holiday is meant to be a break and anything that makes it a bit easier is worth considering.

Letthemysterybe · 22/08/2019 20:00

Buying a double buggy because your 5 year old (heading into year 1??) child might need it seems a bit unnecessary to me. Like NoKnit I have managed to squeeze my 2 and 5 into our small lie flat pushchair on the odd occasion the 5 year old has been picked up from school poorly, or been inconsolable after a fall.

Ponoka7 · 22/08/2019 20:02

Something like a Babytrend sit and stand might do. There's usually someone selling one second hand.

Personally I'd get two cheap ones, they're easier to get round and fit in bars etc. Then you've got the option of not taking one, if not needed.

But that depends on the weight of your five year old.

arseabouttit · 22/08/2019 20:12

I would spend the money on a taxi back rather than buying a massive buggy that you only need for a week. Do they have taxis in Lanzarote? Assuming you are there 7 nights and it's walking distance that's got to be cheaper & easier?

bobstersmum · 22/08/2019 20:14

Ignore the haters, if it will make you holiday more enjoyable then get one. Nothing worse than knackered hot kids, be lovely for them to be out with you and able to rest their legs and fall asleep if they want. It's not for day to day, holidays are different! Id get one that's likely to be roomy though, the umbrella fold ones are narrow and I bet uncomfortable for larger child. Maybe Phil and ted's and put the younger one underneath. Or uppababy vista with rumble seat. Or graco trekko duo is very cheap second hand and seats are quite roomy.

bobstersmum · 22/08/2019 20:14

Oooh or joovy caboose!

NoSauce · 22/08/2019 20:17

Ignore the haters Grin
You mean the people that think 5 is too old for a pram?

MRex · 22/08/2019 20:20

It's weird that some people are so worried about a random 5 year old in a pushchair for a week. It makes no difference to the child nor anybody else except allowing the parents to let the child sleep and/or not carry a child if the child needs either. Look at other options that might be easier, but please don't be put off a solution you think works for your family because some others are being silly about it.

WalkersAreNotTheOnlyCrisps · 22/08/2019 20:23

Taxis are very cheap in Lanzarote.
