IShitGlitter · 22/08/2019 17:42

We have just booked our first abroad holiday with the kids to lanazrote. Weve been aboard loads but weve not taken the plunge with the kids yet......anyway

AIBU to want a double buggy to take for my DD3 DS5 (ages when we go) am thinking at the end of the day he will be shatterd after pool fun evening entertainment ect. Just to be clear he is a fantastic walker and walks everywhere normally.

so AIBU putting my 5 year old in a buggy

So you'd have to lug around the buggy all day for the sake of a short walk? Doesn't sound too practical.

SleepingStandingUp · 22/08/2019 18:07

Presumably Cheshire they'd go out all day then go back and get dressed for dinner and collect buggy then. It would be odd to drag it to and from the hotel without intending to use it...

coffeeforone · 22/08/2019 18:08

YABU. A 5 year old is too big for a buggy.
Also sounds old to me I've had a buggy refuser since his 2nd birthday so my now 3 year old will happily walk pretty long distances.

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 22/08/2019 18:10

I personally wouldn't plan to put a 5 year old in a buggy, if he's used to walking it shouldn't be a problem. just don't stay out ridiculously late and get a taxi if you need to.

however if you do decide to get one I would go a second hand Phil and Ted's I used to have one for food shopping as the bottom/second seat is so roomy! The seat is quite big my nearly 5 year old got in it once when we were at a festival all day and she wasn't feeling great on the way back. she had plenty of space. plus during the day you could use the extra seat for beach supplies/towels/food/drinks etc :)

I have a 5yo and I think she'd feel embarrassed to be put in a buggy to be honest. I'd just let the kids walk and take them home before they got too tired.

SoyDora · 22/08/2019 18:13

It’s not something I would do (my 5 year old wouldn’t get in a buggy for a start and would rather walk), but if you think it will work for you then do it, what does it matter what other people think?

WalkersAreNotTheOnlyCrisps · 22/08/2019 18:13

have buggy’s changed so much in less than a decade that the average 5yr old wouldn’t fit?

Standard buggies seem to be for a child of around 15kg, my four year old is 21kg and would have his feet trailing on the ground.

PlatoAteMySnozcumber · 22/08/2019 18:17

There is no way I would do that. I would stretch to a buggy for the three year old for the evening with a buggy board for the five year old.

SoyDora · 22/08/2019 18:18

No idea if they’ve changed, but the weight limit on our pushchair is 15kg. My 5 year old is 17kg. She would also look pretty ridiculous in it!

Cookit · 22/08/2019 18:22

Do you own the buggy already or could you borrow one? Or are you talking about buying a double buggy just for the purpose of the trip? - which he may or may not use at all.

badfurday · 22/08/2019 18:28

We are off on holiday tomorrow with my 5 year old. We are taking a pushchair, mainly for the evenings when she is tried after dinner, entertainment etc. I'm also 6 months pregnant and physically wouldn't be able to carry her far. She's a great walker normally, but gets cranky and tired in the heat at the end of the day so it's a good option for us. I know a lot of my friends take them too. I'm really not arsed what people think, it works for us as a family, do what works for you.
We got our pushchair from Amazon last year, she still fits in it. 👍🏻

elliejjtiny · 22/08/2019 18:28

Yanbu. Although I think you are going to struggle to find one suitable that doesn't cost thousands and weigh a ton.

Passthecherrycoke · 22/08/2019 18:29

No way for a 5 YO. She wouldn’t go in it in a million years. My DH would carry her if she was too tired at the end of the night

Passthecherrycoke · 22/08/2019 18:30

Oh god @SoyDora mine is 22kg Shock

EllenAshSky1 · 22/08/2019 18:31

Why not... I understand what you mean and you may be kicking yourself if you have quite a long walk back and he's fallen asleep!!!

I had a joie double pram, £100 and it was amazing!!!! Folds down like a stroller big seats.

Do what ever you're comfortable with doing don't worry what any one else has to say, it's your holiday, your kids and you know them. My son is 4 and still jumps in for a cruise when he's being a lazy bones lol (only when my little one is out the pram toddling about and he sees his chance lol)

Ineedaweeinpeace · 22/08/2019 18:31

Oh god just do whatever is right for you and your child and don’t give a fuck what people think!! It’s holiday!

SoyDora · 22/08/2019 18:32

Passthecherrycoke she is small... her younger sister weighs 2kg more than her!

Passthecherrycoke · 22/08/2019 18:33

Oh phew I was worried I had a wide load for a sec🤣

SinkGirl · 22/08/2019 18:33

Are there two adults at least? If so, get separate singles that fold small. Double buggies are a giant pain in my (twin-mum) ass.

lanbro · 22/08/2019 18:34

I first went abroad when mine were 2 & 4, didn't even take a buggy then. I would imagine if really knackered the DC could have a piggyback for a 10 minute walk?

BrunettesDoItBetter · 22/08/2019 18:36

I have a ds5 and way would I buy a buggy, its lazy as fuck tbh.He can walk tired or not surely?

Blubluboo · 22/08/2019 18:37

I would personally take 2 cheapy strollers rather than a double. Just for sleeping in the night. I understand people are saying just head back when they are tired, but if the kids will drop off in the buggy then I think it is nice to have some adult time at a restaurant / bar while on holiday. Yes holidays with children are about the children but why not be able to have adult time too?

SquintEastwood · 22/08/2019 18:38

YANBU to consider it but they may surprise you!

I'd definitely expect 3yo to use it and considered it for my 5yo when we went on holiday last year but decided to buy a cheapo one there if needed, she was happy to stay up late and take in the sights whilst walking around with the odd 5 minute lift here and there for a quick rest.

BrunettesDoItBetter · 22/08/2019 18:38

No way not way

NoKnit · 22/08/2019 18:42

Mine are 3 and 6, granted on the smaller side for their ages but they do both fit into the baby jigger citi mini SINGLE pushchair we fold it into lie down mode and they both sit in there. It's a squeeze but they think it's fun and better than having to walk.
