To wonder why people have no blinds/ nets at the window ?

I’ve always grown up with news and curtains at the windows and have always had nets and curtains or blinds at my window however I have noticed when I pass other people’s homes some homes don’t have anything covering the window.

Surely if your house is on ground level and people pass by they can stare and look right inside your house ?

Do you ever worry about privacy ?

I get it’s not invasive during the day but surely when is nighttime and the lights are on indoors it must feel like everyone can see you ?

Nets? Do people still buy them? Haven’t seen any in about 30 years. I don’t like them personally.

gubbsywubbsy · 22/08/2019 12:00

I hate net curtains 🤮🤮... I grew up without neighbours and always bought houses where no one looks in but even if they did I would'nt have nets .. on the flip side I don't understand why some people have their blinds down all day every day .

whothedaddy · 22/08/2019 12:07

I find nets/blinds suffocating and dusty. Plus we have lovely big Georgian sash windows which are one of the features that made us want to buy it- why would I then cover them up.
We do have light curtains that are drawn at night.
Our house is set back from the road and raised from pavement level with a 5 foot garden wall topped with rose bushes. People could see in but they would have to make an effort to do so.

@OtraCosaMariposa - your post made me think about light. I think I am more depressed in the winter, when it is darker, and as a result, I want to let as much light as possible into the house - and this must help to explain why I don't like net curtains. It isn't just not being able to see out, and feeling hemmed in by nets, it is the diminution of the light in the house that is the biggest thing for me.

MooseBreath · 22/08/2019 13:27

What's the point in a window if you can't see outside? Spoils a nice view. If people are so desperate to look in my house, they can; I've got nothing to hide.

Tighnabruaich · 22/08/2019 14:48

I live down a tiny lane with no through traffic. I have curtains which I close in winter evenings, just to be cosy, but otherwise no nets, no blinds and curtains open the rest of the year.

thepeopleversuswork · 22/08/2019 14:59

Are you 80 OP? I can't believe anyone in this day and age would consider nets, they are beyond naff. I'd rather have nothing at all than net curtains.

I have blinds but have been through phases of not having anything. It doesn't really bother me tbh. I have nothing in my living room I particularly don't want anyone to see and I can't really see why anyone is particularly bothered by it. Unless you have a Faberge egg on display in the window what's to worry about.

I find homes where the curtains or, God forbid, nets are closed all the time depressing. It's like people want to shut the world out.

LochJessMonster · 22/08/2019 15:03

I have nets in the front of my house as I don't like the idea of people looking in as they walk past.

Shinesweetfreedom · 22/08/2019 15:09

Oh God yes I have to have nets. Our house is literally three feet from the pavement.
I would feel exposed without them.

Hahaha88 · 22/08/2019 15:49

No nets or blinds here. I couldn't care a less if people look in for the 2 seconds it takes them to walk past my house. I do close my curtains with it gets dark. But that's just because you can't see anything out of them and it feels cosier with them shut.
I actually think having open windows is a deterrent to buglers for me. They can see it's a complete waste of their time before they break my window or something to find there's nothing to steal.
Nets are much more affordable than blinds for a lot of people. If I lived in a street house where the window is literally on the path then I'd rather have nets than nothing. I'm lucky to have a small front garden (not that there's anything in it that gives privacy) so it doesn't feel like people are in my house when they walk past.
I don't understand people who don't open the curtains/blinds and windows though. Why would you not air your house? I bet it smells musty and not very pleasant in those houses!

FiveLittlePigs · 22/08/2019 15:53

No one has nets here (apart from as greenhouse shading!) they're very old fashioned.

KirstyJC · 22/08/2019 15:56

I have nets at the front of the house as it is onto the pavement and directly looking into the houses opposite, which also all have nets. At the back we are completely private so have nothing at all downstairs - not even curtains. Upstairs we have wooden blinds as I like to keep them partly open for air with the windows open but don't feel right with nothing at all as we sleep naked!

Cath2907 · 22/08/2019 15:57

I don’t have nets. I’m not bothered by people looking in at me watching TV if they really want to! I shut my proper curtains once it gets dark but there is probably a period before then when you can see in...

BeyondMyWits · 22/08/2019 16:01

I have windows to let light into my house, I love natural light - especially when reading/sketching etc - so no nets or blinds here. But I also live in a cul-de-sac, so would see no need.

PancakeAndKeith · 22/08/2019 17:58

As I walked to the supermarket today I thought of this thread. My mile walk takes me through my estate, it’s nice but not naice, and down a not so nice street.
I’d estimate about 75% at least had nets or blinds.

foxtiger · 22/08/2019 18:01

Do you ever worry about privacy?

I'm not really fussy about privacy for privacy's sake. If I was actually doing something that might be embarrassing, or other people might be embarrassed to witness, like having sex for example, I could always draw the main curtains. I don't feel the need to hide the fact that I go about ordinary day-to-day activities inside my house.

bellinisurge · 22/08/2019 18:06

I had a little house that was right on the street (no front garden) at a busy junction near a railway station opposite a busy curry house that had a car park. I had sort of thin patterned cotton fabric up that let light in but you couldn't see through.
Don't have them now in my current house - was actually planning a mooch in ikea to see what they had.

mumguiltrearingitshead · 22/08/2019 18:07

I don't have any but I have quite a large front garden so I'm set back from the road anyway.

mumguiltrearingitshead · 22/08/2019 18:11

I also close my curtains when it's dark and my living room is at the back anyway.

jamoncrumpet · 22/08/2019 18:11

I love the humble bragging in the OPs responses about how 'large' all the houses are.

PancakeAndKeith · 22/08/2019 18:14

‘Oh I hate nets, fortunately I live in my own private estate set in 70 acres and have a moat so I don’t need them’

SerenDippitty · 22/08/2019 18:16

I hate net curtains, and as we have lovely original stained glass in the windows think it would be a shame to put blinds up. The pavement is about 10 feet from the window and I’m not that bothered about people looking in.

PancakeAndKeith · 22/08/2019 18:23

Will someone please tell the Queen she is common?

To wonder why people have no blinds/ nets at the window ?
Midgey91 · 22/08/2019 18:25

I live in central London, therefore have plain voile curtains to stop people looking in.

MuthaFunka61 · 22/08/2019 18:54

I've recently bought some gorgeous french retro nets and had them made into curtains for both the front room and my bedroom, plus I have drawable curtains too.

I live in a bungalow with a small south facing front garden and a hedge, but to be honest it was the scorching of plants and the thought of faded furniture that made me decide to put nets up. That plus the fact that I'm recreating a 60's vibe, and I love it.

Next decision is carpet or lino with rugs?
