AIBU?

To wonder why people have no blinds/ nets at the window ?

I’ve always grown up with news and curtains at the windows and have always had nets and curtains or blinds at my window however I have noticed when I pass other people’s homes some homes don’t have anything covering the window.

Surely if your house is on ground level and people pass by they can stare and look right inside your house ?

Do you ever worry about privacy ?

I get it’s not invasive during the day but surely when is nighttime and the lights are on indoors it must feel like everyone can see you ?

Surely the fear of burglars using the absence of nets to plan a break-in only works if they can actually see something worth stealing.

Anyone looking in through our living room window will be able to spot:

some cheap and very worn furniture

a very elderly small television set

two fishtanks (can you steal fishtanks?)

3 book cases with mainly cheap paperbacks (if you start stealing non-collectors, second-hand books you should probably rethink your future as a burglar)

a collection of very ordinary houseplants (again, if you try to make a living stealing individual spider plants, I don't see much hope for you)

We've got nets. I hate them, but our front garden is a paved over drive with nothing to block the view in, so I've left them up. Both the nets and the paving were decisions made by the previous owner! I did suggest blinds, but we face north and DH pointed out that we'd lose all the light. The nets in our bedroom (above the living room) went though - they were utterly pointless. And we draw the curtains at night in both rooms!

I have wooden blinds - love them Grin. I work from home and don't want people to see into my messy office Blush. Also, i don't like being dazzled by the sun, so love being able to 'control' the amount of sun flooding into the house. My friend says you can never tell if anyone is at home - Just how I like it! Pancake the neighbours really do not need to see me in the nip!

I can’t believe the amount of posters saying they like to look in peoples’ houses. Rude buggers like you are the reason I’d have something up at the window even if it wasn’t the bedroom!

Curtains make rooms feel smaller. Blinds don't. Easy choice.

I used to detest blinds. Having had different experiences I prefer them now.

I don’t think nets really protect you from being seen. I suppose a bit. But once lights are on people can still see you in your jammies.

I live in a small city, I have no blinds (but a front garden). A burglar would see the same in mine as one with nets. If they chose to walk up to the window.

Personally I quite like nets, I think they are coming back in fashion (unless you have cats!!)

You could argue that nets attract burglars because then nobody can see them doing the burgling Grin

To be fair, it really depends where you live. As pp have said, you don't want the top deck of a bus all looking in your bedroom!

Pink sorry mate, I'm a nosey bastard and I just can't help myself! To be fair, I'd hate being looked in on so I have nets Blush

I love having a nosey when walking past ground floor windows! A few seconds into someone's imagined cosy life! I presume they don't mind as long as I don't stop and stare and maintain a distance gaze Grin

I live in the middle of nowhere, I have nothing at any of my windows and haven't for 4 years.
I hope 2020 is going to be the year we will be ready to put curtains up.

I currently don’t have curtains, nets or blinds. Everything got ripped down when the whole house was painted back in January and I can’t decide what to put back up yet!

Don’t like nets as I like seeing out and I have a reasonable size front garden with lawn and trees plus I need all the extra light I can get in my house.

SIL didn't have any curtains up - I felt so self conscious there on new year's eve, we were all dancing and the thought of random people outside being able to watch or crap dancing meant I couldn't enjoy it.

She was burgled and the police recommended they get window coverings - they said the burglars would have easily been able to tell where things were, how to get in, and whether anyone was around just by looking through their uncovered windows.

I tend to go with blinds. I can’t help but get a more...antique vibe from net curtains. My neighbours however preferred to not bother at all. No problem. Accept of course at night when they were lit up like a Christmas tree. Worse. They weren’t too fussed bout clothes. Or any clothes for that matter. Just sorta let it all...hang.

I tried to politely mention to them how err...exposed the view was. To no avail.

I have curtains, but also blinds that I only tend to pull down at night in the bedroom.

I have a very long front garden, so people walking past general can't see in.

My first house was a little terrace on a main road and I just had curtains.

Could never have nets - they are incredibly old fashioned and end up going a horrible yellow colour after a while. They make the loveliest of houses look shabby.

I have curtains but I hardly ever close them
I live in the middle of a wood with no neighbours
I also have GSDs to deter any burglars
I have no intention of closing my curtains except when I have a migraine
If anyone happens to be passing and sees me walking about naked well that's legal in your own home, if you don't want to see naked people don't stare in people's windows!

We do have blinds in the living room and front bedroom, but also a cat who likes to sit and look out, so they are always open. The curtains are always closed when it gets dark. We have a primary school at the end of the street, and sometimes there are gaggles of children waving to the cat at hometime.

Net curtains are IMO horrible and old fashioned!! We have Venetian blinds mainly to stop the doggies yapping when anyone walks by !

I only have blinds and generally tilt them slightly open during the day. Our house is quite far back from the street though tbf and it’s a quiet street so I don’t worry about randomers peering in.

The people across the road leave their curtains open until they go to bed which I find rather odd. When we come to bed I can see what they’re watching on TV, it’s always sky sports.

@BentNeckLady I have net curtains AND I never open my windows.

I also don’t have big proper curtains to close. Only the nets. I wouldn’t like blinds, can’t see out of them and a nightmare to clean and I couldn’t possibly have naked windows where I live. They’re mostly plain nets though. Not the frilly patterned kind

I love watching UK murder mystery shows, but I have often wondered why the houses don't seem to have any coverings on the windows.

People are always being spied on through bare windows. Watching people go about their daily routines.

I guess it comes down to where in the world you live as to what is considered normal.

MIL Is one of these "privacy" people. They have those awful criss cross pattern windows. Then she has vertical blinds. And curtains draped over the window in a sort of half open, half closed fashion.

It's SO dark in their lounge that even on a bright sunny morning they have to put the light on. And even worse, they live towards the end of a very quiet culdesac so don't even have anyone driving past.

God forbid anyone peeps in and spots FIL watching Countdown. Hmm

I only have curtains. We live in a rented flat and I’ve had to move a lot due to LLs selling up etc. To put nets up I’d have to buy those pressure pole thingies because I can’t screw anything into the wall. Nets are pricey and the next time we have to move they probably won’t fit the windows It would just be a waste of money. Blinds I hate but would be a no go because I can’t fix anything to the walls.

Not all of us are lucky enough to own our own houses so we don’t get a choice.

I prefer net curtains to people who use the term common.
