To wonder why people have no blinds/ nets at the window ?

I’ve always grown up with news and curtains at the windows and have always had nets and curtains or blinds at my window however I have noticed when I pass other people’s homes some homes don’t have anything covering the window.

Surely if your house is on ground level and people pass by they can stare and look right inside your house ?

Do you ever worry about privacy ?

I get it’s not invasive during the day but surely when is nighttime and the lights are on indoors it must feel like everyone can see you ?

My house is rented (I've just moved) and it wasn't until I actually moved in I realised that there are no curtains anywhere... Or poles... Or tracks... So whilst I really dislike that everyone can see in the entire of anywhere in my house I don't actually have a choice until I have permission from the landlord to put them up

My neighbours at the back don't have blinds or curtains in their hideous petrol station style extension. The reason is because they are wankers.
I'm not looking forward to another winter of their light pollution.

It takes a very odd kind of person to know that everyone on the street can see you eating breakfast and they all hate you.

My sitting room looks out to the back garden and then fields, so nobody sees in. I have floor to ceiling glass in the whole end wall, and would hate to have it spoiled by nets or blinds.
The dining room is at the front, but I have strategically placed trees and bushes in the front garden, so it’s difficult for anyone to see in there either from the street. I do close its curtains in the winter, but only to make it look cosy.
I tend to associate net curtains with old biddies twitching them to peek at neighbours in suburbs, or Hyacinth Bucket types, but maybe that’s just my age!

I have shutters downstairs but only because I am direct onto the pavement. There were nets when I moved here and I got rid of them as soon as I could.

Thoroughly approve of all the posters with cats who allow them to make the decisions as to window coverings. Cats say bare windows NOW.

I'm not putting crappy looking nets up. Stop looking in my window, you weirdo!

I hate fussy old net curtains, and blinds are just another thing I'd have to dust so I'm happy to have bear windows. I do live tucked away in the corner of a in cul de sac too so can still walk round in my underwear in relative safety.

@slightlysleepy
try this
www.wilko.com/en-uk/d-c-fix-frost-effect-self-adhesive-film-675cm-x-15m/p/0309596.
It is very easy to put up and some how stays in place with no adhesive. ( mine has been up for over a year )
Or this one
www.wilko.com/en-uk/d-c-fix-original-glass-self-adhesive-film-springclear-675m-x-15m-346-8027/p/0309599.
this particular design is a bit 'bathroomy' for my liking but there are more out there.
Because this one is adhesive , it is a bit more fiddly to put up but I was on my own , with another person , even a youngish DC it would be easy.

Both are much cheaper and quicker to fit than curtains / blinds/ nets.

Nets are hideous and I haven't found any blinds that let the light in, and I can see out through. I like being able to see the street.

I have no nets, curtains or blinds but our house is on the corner and the roadside bits don’t have windows on the ground floor. Plus we have very little traffic so I just make a dash from the bathroom to the bedroom if needs be.

We have Roman blinds at the windows, never lowered unless it's very cold in winter. Hate venetian blinds. LOATHE vertical blinds with a passion - why would you want your house to look like a cheap office on an industrial estate? And nets? Don't ever go there. How very Coronation Street.

Don't give two hoots if people can see inside my house.

Because I live in the middle of nowhere... The likelihood of anyone I don't know just happening upon my net-less window is slim to infinitesimal, quite frankly

Nets might sound old fashioned but don’t people just have shutters or shear curtains now? I’m with you OP, can’t bear the thought of people looking in.

Awww, I think that's lovely! I stopped to 'stroke' a kitty sitting in a window the other day - she rubbed herself against the glass on her side while I stroked the glass my side. Grin

I like being able to see out - nets make me feel as if I am closed in, with no connection to the outside world.

My parents never had nets, so I guess I am used to life without them.

I hate nets and took the ones down that previous owners left immediately we got possession. We have a hedge but I'd have it cut lower for preference. I'm not exhibitionist. There's just nothing to see. Just me watching crap telly and being on Mumsnet. Grew up in a back to front house with huge french windows facing the road. If people look in I stare back.

I live in the middle of nowhere so I don't worry too much. I have neighbours, and I do mean to get blinds or curtains (more for insulation that anything else), but I just can't afford them at the moment.

We don't have nets or blinds, as soon as it gets dark the Butler DH closes the curtains, we call it battening down the hatches, we're old so this probably won't make much sense to younger people, our house is slightly higher than the pavement outside so there's not a problem with people looking in. As pp have said I love looking into windows without nets/blinds or curtains at Christmas

I love how on these threads everyone states that they hate nets and no one has them; yet when you walk around and look lots of people have them.

I have voiles at my bedroom window because my house is down a slope and my bedroom window not much higher than street level.
I care not if people on here think they are only for old people and are common. I’d sooner not get dressed with the curtains shut lest someone see my arse.

The back of our house faces forestry land so we have nothing on the windows that face that side. Bliss!

I didn't realise people still had net curtains, except elderly folk. I wouldn't like to not be able to see out the window.

Oh bugger. I have nets on my front room and in my bedroom window. I’m 29 and wouldn’t class myself as common, but I must be 😂 i like mine and they are washed regularly. Hated it before they went up, felt like every bugger could see in.

Definitely a class thing OP. I have one on my living room as it's right off the street. I proper love looking in other people's windows tho so I suppose I'm a hypocrite! Especially nice houses when you can see all the nice stuff it's like going to a museum Grin I reckon they just like showing it off.

DH regards nets as “chavvy”!

PantsyMcPantsface · 21/08/2019 21:16

Have those day/night type blinds - if I want daylight coming in I open them fully, if I'm feeling antisocial I leave them on slatted and then close them at night. Not what I'd love in the windows - I'd love proper custom-made blinds (awkward shaped window) but the cost was prohibitive so it's the nearest workaround I've found.

Had nets when I had my desk right next to the front window as it felt I was working in a goldfish bowl, but don't have them now as my desk's the other end of the house.
