to think I have any chance of getting job when I turned up on wrong day

Soooo, I had 2 interviews yesterday - I travelled over from Ireland. Arrived, reception had no record of any interviews, contacted dept, Spoke to them on the phone - interviews are today (i.e. tomorrow), not yesterday when I arrived. I thought I was going to get sick, I couldnt believe I got the date wrong. At first the girl said I made a mistake and they would see me tomorrow. I explained about my flight etc, no she said, not their problem basically - perfectly understandable. So I rang off and went to investigate a hotel, or could I change my flight, could I sleep in the airport if hotel was too expensive - this place wasnt paying any expenses. Anyway, long story short, they rang me back, and having spoken to the interview panel, they "fitted me in" yesterday. Only 2 out of 3 people on the panel were available, but they found a 3rd person. I thought I did quite well, they seemed to like me. But.... is there any point in even thinking I might be offered one of the jobs considering what an absolute idiot I am. Cant believe I did that, am so stupid. Only excuse is that I have a lot on my mind - having to move out of my apartment next week with the kids, and nowhere to go, so have booked us into a hostel, just loads of stuff going on. What do you all think, tx

I think you got it x

Watchingthyme · 21/08/2019 11:25

Well you were a day early and not a day late. So that’s more positive. And they did change it for you.
Even if it doesn’t work out, don’t be too hard on yourself.

BeanBag7 · 21/08/2019 11:26

They wouldnt have tried to fit you in if they weren't at least considering you for the job

BananasAreTheSourceOfEvil · 21/08/2019 11:27

I would have seen the funny side of it and taken it as a good sign that you wouldnt be late for any meetings! Grin

Good luck!

SerenDippitty · 21/08/2019 11:27

The fact you travelled from Ireland says something about your commitment.

JustmeandtheKIDS2 · 21/08/2019 11:28

You travelled a long way to go for interview, responded appropriately once you realised your mistake and still got to the interview. Of course you stand a chance, were all human. Xx

gumbalina01 · 21/08/2019 11:28

I had someone turn up a day early last week for an interview, I could not conduct the interview so they did come back the following day. Initially I thought they were a bit of a muppet for getting the day wrong, but the truth is if they had delivered an outstanding interview I would have hired them. Mistakes happen, it is hard to find good staff, Good luck, don’t give yourself a hard time, lesson learned

Billballbaggins · 21/08/2019 11:31

They wouldn’t have fitted you in if they weren’t keen. So fingers crossed for you!

SirJamesTalbotAndHisSpeculum · 21/08/2019 11:31

I really think you're in with a chance.

You made a lot of effort to get to the interview - you came from another country and were willing to come back the next day.

I think you showed commitment. Please update us when you hear from them and good luck!

millmoo · 21/08/2019 11:31

I think you’re their strongest candidate as they pulled out all the stops to see you.
If they weren’t that interested in you they would have just said no you’ve got the wrong day . Good luck ! Let us know how you get on xxx

needsahouseboy · 21/08/2019 11:32

I think the fact they were so keen to fit you in is a good thing. I interview people and it wouldn't put me off unless they were totally shit at interview. I've seen some corkers!

swingofthings · 21/08/2019 11:33

It could go either way. Clearly they cared to make arrangements so that's good that they are such a company.

It could be that they just felt very sorry for you, or you were the best candidate on paper.

I don't think the mistake itself will influence them if they bothered to accommodate you probably more thinking this is something they could imagine doing themselves. You showed commitment by looking into staying the extra day.

It could go either way. Good luck.

SirJamesTalbotAndHisSpeculum · 21/08/2019 11:34

And I hope your move with the children into a hostel next week isn't too traumatic.

Yes - you have got a lot on your plate ATM. Flowers

Ginseng1 · 21/08/2019 11:52

I think you have a chance if interview good. You made big effort to get there. You were prepared to stay & come back next day. They rearranged the interview. How did you feel interview went? I hope you weren't flustered or go on about how much u have on your plate etc I totally agree it's alot :( but wouldnt want to hear about it in interview.

Ceci03 · 21/08/2019 11:59

it was actually my 10th and 11th interview trying to get a job!!! I think it went really well, the best yet, and I usually know/think I did terrible. Will keep fingers crossed. The first interview I was a little bit flustered, but I still go in a lot of stuff I wanted to say and one of them said "you have done your homework havent you" when I spoke at length about their company. There's always things you wish you'd said differently though isnt there, or better things you could have said. Fingers crossed anyway. Would be a lifesaver - couldnt tell them that of course!

Funny my friend did this recently too. As others have said at least it was a day early and not a day late.

Best of luck with it OP.

Ginmel · 21/08/2019 12:01

Good luck op. I would offer to be available for a phone interview for the first 3rd person in case they want to be involved.

PlaceYourItemInTheBaggingArea · 21/08/2019 12:04

I interview loads of people all the time. Honestly, this would not have put me off at all, it's all about selling yourself in the interview.

PlaceYourItemInTheBaggingArea · 21/08/2019 12:05

Good luck with everything too.

MyOtherProfile · 21/08/2019 12:06

Sounds positive. When will you hear? Might they tell you today after the other interviews?

whatsleep · 21/08/2019 12:11

At least you stood out and the interview panel will remember you! Very best of luck, fingers crossed for you

picklejimmy · 21/08/2019 12:17

I think the fact they scrambled around to fit you in is a very positive sign. Companies wouldn't go out of their way if they didn't see potential to make a hire. Your application was obviously strong enough for then to want to meet you :)

mrslaurenbrown · 21/08/2019 12:17

I work as a HR manager and the fact they managed to fit you in says a lot. At the end of the day if you were the best candidate you will get it. Arriving a day early as a genuine mistake won't put them off vs arriving a day late. Sure it might have meant you needed to do a little more to convince them but if you were the best they will still want you.

Userzzzzz · 21/08/2019 12:26

In all honesty I think it depends on the role. If it is something that specifies high attention to detail then for me, it would be a black mark. You’ve shown a lot of commitment though so I hope for you it goes well.

littlemissdynamite · 21/08/2019 12:33

Oooooh, you sound WELL keen! (And lovely too.)

Hope you get it. (I think you will.) Grin
