to think I have any chance of getting job when I turned up on wrong day

Soooo, I had 2 interviews yesterday - I travelled over from Ireland. Arrived, reception had no record of any interviews, contacted dept, Spoke to them on the phone - interviews are today (i.e. tomorrow), not yesterday when I arrived. I thought I was going to get sick, I couldnt believe I got the date wrong. At first the girl said I made a mistake and they would see me tomorrow. I explained about my flight etc, no she said, not their problem basically - perfectly understandable. So I rang off and went to investigate a hotel, or could I change my flight, could I sleep in the airport if hotel was too expensive - this place wasnt paying any expenses. Anyway, long story short, they rang me back, and having spoken to the interview panel, they "fitted me in" yesterday. Only 2 out of 3 people on the panel were available, but they found a 3rd person. I thought I did quite well, they seemed to like me. But.... is there any point in even thinking I might be offered one of the jobs considering what an absolute idiot I am. Cant believe I did that, am so stupid. Only excuse is that I have a lot on my mind - having to move out of my apartment next week with the kids, and nowhere to go, so have booked us into a hostel, just loads of stuff going on. What do you all think, tx

If you gave a good interview then it wouldn't put me off!
I really hope you get it op!

Likethebattle · 21/08/2019 12:53

The girl sitting one desk away from me turned up a day early.

blackfriars · 21/08/2019 12:56

They wouldn't have bothered to 'fit you in' if they didn't still consider you a viable candidate - it would have been a waste of the interviewer's time! Good luck! x

PlatoAteMySnozcumber · 21/08/2019 12:59

Obviously it’s a black mark against you but if you are by far the stand out candidate then you can still get the job otherwise they wouldn’t have bothered speaking to you. As with all job applications, if really depends on your competition.

they said friday afternoon. just lost another place - they are advertised, but then rented out with no viewings. this has happened 5 times in the past week. if I did get this job, it would be such a lifesaver. i have a job, but renting here is just a nightmare atm

I did say that about the 3rd person, if they wanted to talk to me on the phone I was happy to do that - I'm not sure how that went down though. Oh i'm probably over-thinking it. I guess they will remember me anyway!

Good luck OP! They wouldn't have gone to the effort of taking unexpected time out of their day and rallying an extra person if they weren't keen! Why waste their own time? I recruit myself and these things happen, it's just part and parcel of hiring. Dont worry!

@Ceci03 I hear you. I am in Ireland too and I know how terrible it is in the major cities. I am from Dublin but lived in Galway for two years. I am now in Roscommon in a house that isn't suitable for the rent market (damp on walls no matter how often I wash them, no fire alarms or carbon monoxide alarms - they were there but taken down as the bases are still screwed to the ceiling, boiler is leaking and everytime the heating goes on it sounds like the rads are refilling themselves from empty) but we are currently building a house and there is nothing else to rent in the area. Its a loose loose situation.

I hope you get sorted shortly.

MarigoldGlove · 21/08/2019 14:20

I hope you get it. Like everyone is saying, they must have wanted to see you to fit you in.

tillytrotter1 · 22/08/2019 07:45

I once got my name wrong on an application form, wrote my surname twice, I still got the job!

AmIThough · 22/08/2019 08:15

I think if you did a good interview you have as much of a chance as everyone else. They'll never let you live down the embarrassment if you do get the job, though Grin

DingDongDenny · 22/08/2019 08:16

This happened to a colleague of mine - she still got the job!

Ceci03 · 22/08/2019 11:12

fingers still crossed - they said they will ring on friday, so I guess if I dont hear anything by about 4pm tomorrow I havent got it... please send a wish to the universe for me, I really need just one lucky break right now!

AmIThough · 03/09/2019 14:04

Did you get the job @Ceci03?

Ceci03 · 03/09/2019 14:08

soooooooooooo.... I got a 2nd interview - yay! That was last Friday... but ... I didnt get the job. Was so so so disappointed, as I really felt they liked me. In the end they preferred someone else though. Was so upset. Hard to get going again on the job hunt. Especially as they dont pay expenses, so I had 2 trips from dublin-uk to pay for. Still living in the hostel. Really sucks.

Fingers crossed something comes up soon. It's good interview experience though! Ask them what you could improve on and use their advice for the next interview.

itsmecathycomehome · 03/09/2019 21:56

I'm gutted for you, and hope something better comes up soon. You must have really impressed them to get a second interview after turning up on the wrong day!
