To ask the nursery if they say this.

DS (3) has recently started shouting “oh my god” when he’s excited.

I’m sure this isn’t something I say: and my husband definitely doesn’t say it.

My mum is very religious and we live near a lot of religious people, so I don’t really want him using this phrase. Growing up my mum would have went mental if I used this phrase. She would have rather I swore instead of blaspheming (she doesn’t like swearing either)

DH was going to Ask the nursery if it’s something he could have possibly picked up there. But would we be “those” parents?

Half the kids will be saying it. Yes, you would be “that parent”. All you can reasonably do is tell him you don’t want him to say it.

Dylaninthemovies1 · 20/08/2019 20:15

@herculepoirot2 I told him not to use it today. He then repeated it about 5 times!!! Wee monkey

It’s up to you what you do at home. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Lwmommy · 20/08/2019 20:17

Give it zero attention, do not react at all, no looks, sighs, just continue on as normal. Once he sees it gets no reaction he'll get bored of saying it.

Hollanda40 · 20/08/2019 20:18

Seriously my DS says A LOT worse at 7!!! It's got to the point where I naturally correct anyone saying "Oh my God" by saying."Oh my days"! They will hear swearing/blasphemy at school, in town, everywhere and there isn't much to do other than not react overly strongly and just gently correct them!! DS7 knows adults swear sometimes but he doesn't repeat them.

TheBadCop · 20/08/2019 20:20

you are being ridiculous, sorry.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 20/08/2019 20:20

All the kids I know would say OMG. Which obviously means the same but isnt quite the same iyswim. Maybe he heard it on tv?

Dylaninthemovies1 · 20/08/2019 20:21

@Lwmommy that’s maybe the best idea. Me telling him we don’t say that hasn’t worked

SweetAsSpice · 20/08/2019 20:21

Enjoy the phrases he will pick up once he goes to school Grin

Raphael34 · 20/08/2019 20:22

You’re over reacting

Sallyseagull · 20/08/2019 20:22

I would ask in passing, in a lighthearted way, as he has possibly picked it up from another child and they could maybe nip it in the bud that way.

Sunshineonleith12 · 20/08/2019 20:23

Just calmly keep correcting him with Oh my goodness or whatever you prefer. Unfortunately the nursery, and many others, are unlikely to see it as an issue.

FiveLittlePigs · 20/08/2019 20:23

We ”cured” my dd of saying ”fuck” by giving her a fork every single time she said it. And asking why she needed it.

I have no idea what we would have done had she uttered ”cunt” Grin

BuffaloCauliflower · 20/08/2019 20:23

I’m with you OP. I think it is rude to say and it’s not treated as such by people anymore. But I think you just need to teach him that sometimes people say things that it’s not ok for him to

Dyrne · 20/08/2019 20:23

If it’s the blasphemy you object to; then try gently correcting him to say “well fuck me sideways!” Instead of “Oh My God”...

Oysterbabe · 20/08/2019 20:24

My DD is 3 and says "oh for God's sake" 🙈 She's definitely copied me and I made it worse by giggling the first time she said it and now she won't stop and thinks its hilarious. I'm just ignoring it now and hoping she forgets. So if he goes to nursery with my DD, sorry! My fault.

ChristmasArmadillo · 20/08/2019 20:24

I don’t allow mine to say that. I just casually correct it to “goodness/word, remember?” They’ve only said it once or twice each from hearing others and then it wasn’t an issue.

dollydaydream114 · 20/08/2019 20:25

There are a million and one ways he could have picked it up. If he heard it from another child at nursery, there isn’t much the staff can do about that, particularly as most people don’t find it offensive.

Was the other way round for me and my friends. We all heard it at home and on telly all the time then went to primary school at seven and got a clip round the ear for it from our evangelical Baptist teacher.

iklboo · 20/08/2019 20:25

Wait for the 'Mummy, what's a twat?' conversation.

BarbariansMum · 20/08/2019 20:25

We say OMG and so do our children. From an early age they were taught not to say it in front of their grandparents or other religious people.

BogglesGoggles · 20/08/2019 20:25

How old is he? If he’s ina room with 3/4 year olds he’s likely heard it from them.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 20/08/2019 20:26

I will never forget the moment my son (then about aged 3) went on one of the ride along toys at playgroup and announced loudly the fucking car wont start. Blush

adaline · 20/08/2019 20:26

Just ignore it - he's doing it for attention.

PeevedNiamh · 20/08/2019 20:26

Also from a religious family, all I did was correct to OH MY GOSH every time. It sinks in eventually. All the religious family who would have been offended are gone now but its still a habit Grin

jmh740 · 20/08/2019 20:27

I dont like it either it isnt allowed at my childrens school, can you repeat it back when he says it with oh my gosh and just keep telling him it's not a nice thing to say.
