We are selling our house. Completing on 22nd (Thursday). Our buyer apparently initiated a energy supply switch on my property BEFORE completion. Scottish power now put my account on goodbye cycle!! !

AIBU to completely be mad at scottish power for closing my account on the instruction of some third party? Scottish power customer rep confirmed on the phone that I can pick a random property and give them grief closing down their fcuking account !! That too on 28th! I am fuming. I cannot supply readings via my online account tomorrow and their fcuking phone systems are always so busy.

AIBU to be livid about this ??? Scottish power and I are in a contract. They closed down my account on instruction from a third party. My buyers decided my account must close on 28th, and scottish power just agreed ? Where am I in all this ???

You are moving out on 22nd, account closed on 28th so you will have been gone six days by then. Why are you stressing.

I have had this too, and it actually caused some issues with confirming final bills etc, so make sure everything is clear and you have all the information about the account closing in writing, just in case.

EggysMom · 20/08/2019 20:51

Make a note of the meter reading now. Run the washing machine like made for 2 days. Phone on 22nd and give them the meter reading from now Grin

justasking111 · 20/08/2019 20:54

give them the meter reading and photograph it for evidence, we have never had any problems doing this.

Mascarponeandwine · 20/08/2019 20:54

YABU to expect anything better from Scottish power, they are complete shite. Managed to go years without adding any actual charges to my account, happened twice, then they decided I owed them money. In the end I told them I was leaving as they were affecting my mental health with all the stress of their “systems”, and I got compensation.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 20/08/2019 20:55

I don't see why you are upset, given that it closes after you leave?

However I agree in principle this should not be allowed. We had someone switch our electricity supplier once - don't know who - and when my mum came to live with us temporarily, her energy supplier tried to take over our supply! Unbelievable that this is allowed without the billpayer's permission.

SteelRiver · 20/08/2019 20:56

Surely, your account will close when you supply the meter readings on the 22nd, when you leave, and settle the account.

Nothing wrong in your buyer looking for a better deal than the standard tariffs that will automatically be applied. No point anyone paying more than they have to.

Oliversmumsarmy · 20/08/2019 21:05

I have had this but I wasn't moving.

I noticed after about 6 months that I wasn't being charged by Scottish power (.monthly DD)
At the same time I was receiving mail to a guy who didn't live at this address.

Eventually they sent round a to the occupier letter and I called up and they put me back on my monthly DD.

As far as I was concerned Mr XXXX was responsible for the meter readings in those 6 months

Seeingadistance · 20/08/2019 21:05

I agree that they should not have closed your account on the say so of a random person.

I also agree with pp that Scottish Power are shite. I’ve just bought a flat with a 2 rate meter and am getting gas put in, so contacted Scottish Power to let them know that I now own the flat, that I want to change electric meter and install gas meter. You’d think this was pretty run of the mill stuff for a company that provides metered supplies of electricity and gas, but apparently not! They really are hopeless and as soon as I do manage to get my meters sorted out I will be changing to another supplier.

Oliversmumsarmy · 20/08/2019 21:08

Just thought about it and remembered I wasn't with Scottish Power. I was a few years before but then I changed.

I don't really know what is going on with my gas and electric the companies keep changing

KT2019 · 20/08/2019 21:30

Good luck! We used to have SP in a rented flat, the flat above us changed hands and somehow, not sure if it was the new tenants error or SP themselves, but they decided to close our account and move it upstairs instead...I twigged a month later when the DD hadnt come off as normal and they said its because you moved and tenants XY now live in your old address Hmm...Queue 18 months of arguing with them and the ombudsman about who's bills were who's and why they'd change the address on my account without any DPA checks etc.

Take pictures of the meters before you leave as proof, and make a note of any calls to them whether you get through to a human or not, and take it up with the ombudsman as soon as you can, hopefully they don't try to shaft you too badly Flowers

cbatoday · 20/08/2019 22:12

Take photos of your meters when you leave and if possible have a date stamp and email them to Scottish power. Then save the photo in case they lose them

elaeocarpus · 20/08/2019 22:20

Another one who had awful SP dealings over 2 years and got it only resolved via ombudsmen.

Record every contact you have, and check timeline for ombudsman complaints. SP duped us saying it was sorted so many times to delay things beyond the ombudsman timeframe

RosaWaiting · 20/08/2019 22:22

I’m with you OP

A new contract should not begin till the old one has been terminated by the person living at the property.

RosaWaiting · 20/08/2019 22:26

Also OP, who is meant to pay the bill between 22nd and 28th? There’ll be a standing charge presumably, not sure what happens if you actually switch the electric off, but I’d do that immediately after taking your meter pic.

slashlover · 20/08/2019 22:52

When did the buyer initiate the switch? Surely you would have already told SP you were moving?

BeUpStanding · 20/08/2019 23:11

Scottish Power are FUCKING SHIT! The worst company or organisation I have ever dealt with - to be fair the people I have to deal with are all nice enough as individuals, but as a business they are appalling. I cannot be arsed to explain my long running saga with them - but they constantly get everything wrong. Inaccurate bills. Send out contradictory information. Promise X and never do it. I've been with a new supplier for over 6 months and Scottish Power are still unable to give me an accurate final bill.

Apologies for the rant but my god do I hate that company! They've taken hours and hours and hours of my life trying to sort out their mistakes and shitness. Am now going to the omsbudman to try and get it sorted.

RedRose55 · 21/08/2019 06:59

Thanks everyone. I’ve calmed down a bit now. I will take meter readings today and email them to Scottish power.

I was furious yesterday. I DIDNT contact Scottish power about the move yet. I assume it was my buyer who contacted them. EPIC!

Ask them why the took instructions from someone they knew wasn’t you.

YouJustDoYou · 21/08/2019 09:16

We had this, except they also managed to cancel and reinstate in their names a whole ream of other things because the idiots got their new address wrong and put ours in instead.

museumum · 21/08/2019 09:19

They’re not a random third party. On the date in question they are the owners of the property being supplied!!! Too bloody right they can take you off the account!

RosaWaiting · 21/08/2019 09:21

museumum you sound irate.

HeddaGarbled · 21/08/2019 09:25

We’ve always made arrangements with energy suppliers both ends in advance of moving dates. I thought that’s what you were supposed to do.

PookieDo · 21/08/2019 09:28

I’m currently pissed off with SP. took me 2 hours to get through to them to get my meters changed, was supposed to be happening today but the contractor has now cancelled and hasn’t told SP either. SP’s online chat facility can take 6 hours for them to respond to you!
