… to wish people would stop ‘popping’ everywhere?

‘Pop to the shops’, ‘pop upstairs’ ‘pop out’, ‘pop in’… stop bloody popping! You can ‘go’ and ‘walk’ and all sorts of other verbs. When people say ‘pop’ I imagine them smugly teleporting with a little wink and a little bell sound and it’s infuriating. Sometimes I imagine the teleport going wrong and the popper ending up stuck halfway through the wall dying an agonising gory death to calm myself down.

Doesn't it imply a short trip? If you're going to the shops you might wander and take your time. A pop to the shops is to grab a couple of things and come back. A pop in is a cup of tea and then gone.

I agree if people are using it to mean long visits, I think

TrendyNorthLondonTeen · 19/08/2019 21:54

If I see one more post advising someone to "pop the baby in a sling" I will scream.

TruckstopTrudy · 19/08/2019 21:54

Oh dear I pop everywhere! I pop things in/on things and advise others do the same! Sometimes I nip (upstairs/downstairs/out) too...

TruckstopTrudy · 19/08/2019 21:56

I’m laughing out loud at how daft it actually sounds though! My mum “pops by” all the time! Pahaha

Sparklingbrook · 19/08/2019 21:56

It doesn't bother me. Describes that you are doing something quickly.

wifesupremacist · 19/08/2019 21:58

yeah i hate this op, i'm by no means a prescriptivist but this can fuck off

PancakeAndKeith · 19/08/2019 21:58

I pop to a lot of places.
As said above, it’s just a short visit.

I was once chatting to some Americans when I said I was going to pop to the loo and the said that was the most English thing they’d ever heard.

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 19/08/2019 21:58

We don't really pop round here... we nip. I may very well nip downstairs for a drink in a minute.

happystory · 19/08/2019 21:59

Yes pancake my American visitor found it hilarious too!

Reallybadidea · 19/08/2019 21:59

Better than 'bob' IMHO.

imclaustrophobicdarren · 19/08/2019 22:00

Just popping on this thread to give you a Biscuit

Celebelly · 19/08/2019 22:00

Pop in
pop out
pop over the road
pop out for a walk
pop down to the shop
can’t stop
got to pop
got to pop?
pop where?
pop what?
well I’ve got to pop round
pop up
pop in to town
pop out and see
pop in for tea
pop down to the shop
can’t stop
got to pop
got to pop?
pop where?
pop what?
well I’ve got to pop in
pop out
pop over the road
pop out for a walk
pop in for a talk

I love telling people I’m popping in to see them.

FourEyesGood · 19/08/2019 22:02

YANBU. It always makes me think of going for a smear test (“Just pop your pants and trousers off and pop onto the table.”).

LizzieSiddal · 19/08/2019 22:03

I like the sound of it.

Pop

Pop

Pop

Elision · 19/08/2019 22:03

I think if this was something that people said rarely it might almost be cute but it seems everyone says it CONSTANTLY and they’ve forgotten every other verb to describe short trips or visits or even putting an object or creature in a specific place or putting on an item of clothing or an accessory. They think it sounds cuter or more charming than ‘go’ or ‘place’ or ‘put’ but it just sounds daft and saccharine.

Lalallama · 19/08/2019 22:04

I don't mind it for popping to somewhere. Pop to the shops, pop in for a cup of tea.

But I can't be doing with popping in things though. Popping the dinner in the oven. NO.

It is now making me think of Mrs Popoff.

DrFoxtrot · 19/08/2019 22:04

Agree with PP that 'popping' is better than 'bobbing'.

littlebitbroken · 19/08/2019 22:05

Urgh are they 'popping' to see 'peeps'?

Vom.

zackly · 19/08/2019 22:06

I live abroad in a place where nobody uses the term. DD is 6 and says it all the time. I've been forced to accept that she must have picked it up from me Grin

Littlecaf · 19/08/2019 22:06

I’m more bothered about the “pop up” bollocks.

Pop up shop
Pop up restaurant
Pop up event
Pop up festival

Oh just pop off. It’s the hipster way of saying “temporary”.

nobodyimportant · 19/08/2019 22:07

I like popping and I just can't stop.
Stop popping?
I can't stop popping.
I like popping and I just can't stop.

Drogosnextwife · 19/08/2019 22:09

I just wish everyone would stop turning around when they are talking to people.

Fruityb · 19/08/2019 22:09

I’m a nipper rather than a popper lol

messolini9 · 19/08/2019 22:09

Sometimes I imagine the teleport going wrong and the popper ending up stuck halfway through the wall dying an agonising gory death to calm myself down.

Then you are clearly the Right Sort, & YANBU.
