… to wish people would stop ‘popping’ everywhere?

‘Pop to the shops’, ‘pop upstairs’ ‘pop out’, ‘pop in’… stop bloody popping! You can ‘go’ and ‘walk’ and all sorts of other verbs. When people say ‘pop’ I imagine them smugly teleporting with a little wink and a little bell sound and it’s infuriating. Sometimes I imagine the teleport going wrong and the popper ending up stuck halfway through the wall dying an agonising gory death to calm myself down.

For some reason I don't mind 'pop' meaning briefly go, but I don't like it to mean 'put' (e.g. just pop it in that drawer/in the post etc.)

Skinnychip · 22/08/2019 17:39

What about "swing by" when arranging to collect someone?
Disclaimer: i often drop by but have been known to pop, never nipped though. swing by is used by friends and DH.

Labassecour · 22/08/2019 17:41

Yes, that's somehow far worse, @lazy.

When it comes to putting something in the oven I always imagine Delia 'popping' and competing with Jamie Oliver 'flinging' or 'boshing' or 'whanging' it in and wondering which one I get to shoot if I only have a single shot...

Malfoof · 22/08/2019 17:57

Don't Australians rock up to places?
Personally, I like to crack on with stuff Smile

Malfoof · 22/08/2019 17:59

Also wang things, (wang the washing in the machine) and whack things (whack the tea on).

PlatoAteMySnozcumber · 22/08/2019 18:20

I hate it also, but it the context of going somewhere it is helpful to denote the passage of time.

You pop out, go out or go out out surely?!

TuttiFrutti · 22/08/2019 18:35

The Fay Ripley cookbooks are full of this: just pop it in the oven, just pop some sauce on, pop pop pop. They are otherwise excellent, but the overuse of popping sets my teeth on edge.

yellowallpaper · 22/08/2019 19:27

There an Orchard Game called 'pop to the shops' so you're on to a loser here.

Cecilandsnail · 22/08/2019 19:30

I pop and nip everywhere 😂

Thuglife · 22/08/2019 19:30

I’m going to try not saying it tomorrow- my patients have probably been “seething “ in the past Grin

Cecilandsnail · 22/08/2019 19:33

I also whack and stick a lot. Whack the kettle on and stick the milk in the fridge.

aspoonfulofyourownmedicine · 22/08/2019 20:39

I use 'nip' rather than 'pop'. I usually use 'gaan' in my broad North Eastern accent 😂

Saracen · 23/08/2019 07:31

Grin @Greeborising

It works well in hospital.
Pop your clothes off
Pop on this gown
Pop onto the bed
I’m just going to pop this up your arse.......

Saracen · 23/08/2019 07:32

Why is it that men hardly ever pop or nip anywhere? It seems a very female expression.

Saracen · 23/08/2019 07:33

I can just about tolerate people popping to the shops, so long as they aren't popping to the shops for a few bits and pieces.

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 23/08/2019 10:07

Why is it that men hardly ever pop or nip anywhere?

This.

Popping is a feminist issue.

floffel · 23/08/2019 10:12

Had to add this photo of the most famous popper for you OP

@Thuglife, if you're a GP or a practice nurse, and you've been surprised by the high blood pressure of some patients after you've asked them to pop on the couch, and pop their sleeve up so you can pop a cuff on them, now you know! Grin

Labassecour · 23/08/2019 10:41

Popping is a feminist issue.

It is! Because women are socialised to verbally minimise their own effort, particularly their 'unimportant domestic/caring efforts all that popping to the shops and popping things in the oven and popping in to check on an elderly relative and men, bluntly, are socialised not to.

firesong · 23/08/2019 10:59

In the name of checking this feminist issue, I searched my chat history between me and my boyfriend. I then checked messages between me and my ex (my son's dad). We all pop and whack and I wish we "bobbed" as that sounds funny 😂

WaltzForDebbie · 23/08/2019 11:08

I opened this thread expecting it to be about farting!

blackpinkinyourarea · 23/08/2019 11:12

What about people that add a 'pop of colour' to their outfit Grin

Labassecour · 23/08/2019 11:22

What about people that add a 'pop of colour' to their outfit

Obviously, they should be soundly beaten.

icecreamsundae32 · 23/08/2019 13:33

@Labassecour Grin now I do hate a pop of colour!

katewhinesalot · 23/08/2019 13:37

To me it's a very old fashioned way of talking. A bit like I heard "the fridge had packed up" yesterday on the radio and thought I haven't heard that expression since my childhood.
