… to wish people would stop ‘popping’ everywhere?

‘Pop to the shops’, ‘pop upstairs’ ‘pop out’, ‘pop in’… stop bloody popping! You can ‘go’ and ‘walk’ and all sorts of other verbs. When people say ‘pop’ I imagine them smugly teleporting with a little wink and a little bell sound and it’s infuriating. Sometimes I imagine the teleport going wrong and the popper ending up stuck halfway through the wall dying an agonising gory death to calm myself down.

POP

Speakercube · 19/08/2019 23:11

Agree that 'rock up' is worse than pop. I hate pop ups on my phone but I don't mind pop up shops...

sleepyhead · 19/08/2019 23:11

My bugbear is all the whipping people do.

Whip up a quick snack
Whip on a clean top
Whip out a rabbit from a hat

I always imagine them doing whatever it is with a flourish and a tadah!

doyoureallylikeit · 19/08/2019 23:12

I'm a "call" er! I'll call in and see my mates/mum and dad, call to shops......sounds weird now I'm saying it to myself haha

LadyRannaldini · 19/08/2019 23:19

I'm sure the OP wil produce a certified list of expressions she finds acceptable for everyone else to use! Some people really do think an awful lot of themselves if they think they can lecture others on what's acceptable.

katseyes7 · 19/08/2019 23:23

People in my part of Yorkshire don't 'pop'. They 'bob'.

messolini9 · 19/08/2019 23:23

"Some people really do think an awful lot of themselves if they think they can lecture others on what's acceptable."
Opined @LadyRannaldini, lecturingly ...

The OP, & most pp's are just having a laugh here, Lady R.
Try it one day ..

Greeborising · 19/08/2019 23:24

It works well in hospital.
Pop your clothes off
Pop on this gown
Pop onto the bed
I’m just going to pop this up your arse.......

Grandmi · 19/08/2019 23:31

Lucky you that this expression annoys you!! Too much time on your hands !!

TrendyNorthLondonTeen · 19/08/2019 23:54

"Lucky you that this expression annoys you!! Too much time on your hands !!"

Found the popper

PositiveVibez · 20/08/2019 00:02

Celebelly you beat me to it!

I thought of that poem as soon as I read the OP 😂

Toneitdown · 20/08/2019 01:55

How dare you be so disgustingly unpatriotic. This is a matter of national pride. We are a nation of poppers (and nippers).

That's it, I'm reporting you to BJ. He'll be sure to pop round and give you a jolly good talking to.

6utter6ean · 20/08/2019 02:35

I have a friend who dodges everywhere: dodge to the shops; dodge into town etc. I like it. I imagine her house surrounded by snipers who she has avoid by hiding behind bins, or scuttling between parked cars.

LemonPrism · 20/08/2019 02:37

I do teleport with a wink though... should I stop popping?

7salmonswimming · 20/08/2019 02:43

YANBU. I hate how noncommittal and timid it is.

Yes. I am quite a cheerless soul.

ilovesooty · 20/08/2019 02:59

I hadn't noticed it until this thread. Now I'm seeing it on every post.

I wish people would stop suggesting sitting people down when instigating a conversation.

TabbyMumz · 20/08/2019 08:31

It could be a northern thing...it reminds me of the Louise Woodward case..(au pair in America)..she said in her statement that she "popped the baby in the bath"..the Americans thought that meant she admitted killing him.

DitheringBlidiot · 20/08/2019 08:38

I pop people on hold at work on a daily basis, I can’t exactly “whack” a customer on hold, it wouldn’t go down well I don’t think!

StillCoughingandLaughing · 20/08/2019 08:41

I don’t mind ‘pop to the shops’ etc. It is what it sounds like - a short journey. However, my closest friend ‘pops’ everywhere, regardless of distance, and it drives me nuts. She ‘pops’ to see her parents, despite them living nearly four hours away. She’d pop to Azerbai sodding jan if you let her Angry

icecreamsundae32 · 20/08/2019 08:55

@Youseethethingis I thought of Micky Flanagan popping out in his slippers and ending up "out out" Grin
Popping is fine if you are quick - pop to the shop for milk/bread. Pop in for a cup of tea.
Jumping in the shower is also fine - again if you are going to be less than 5 mins lol - the term jump implies you are going to be quick!
Whack something in the oven/whack the kettle on does make me chuckle.

Rock up is hilarious I have an image of a gang of yobby teenagers with attitude sauntering up with headphones on blaring out some hip hop music Grin (no offence to anyone who rocks up!)

DilysMoon · 20/08/2019 09:09

I nip and stick on/in, no popping here Grin

Dotty1970 · 20/08/2019 09:20

I'm just going to pop out to see blah and will nip to the shops on the way... What's the issue, its understandable language that's to the point

Dotty1970 · 20/08/2019 09:21

Haha yes 'out out'.... As long as that doesn't happen you've nailed it

ThisIsNotMyRealName1 · 22/08/2019 07:21

Grin at Greeborising

longwayoff · 22/08/2019 07:52

People have been popping and nipping for decades, probably centuries. YABU.
