Chewing gum is considered unprofessional in retail. Everywhere I have worked, it is one of the first things you are told. I personally find chewing gum disgusting and I would have had to say something to her. I have in the past told staff members to lose the gum. It makes them look totally disinterested in what they are doing, and whether that is the case or not, they are paid to be there, doing their job, not chewing gum. It also gives the impression that you are terminally dim, too.

It might bother me if it was the optometrist chewing in very close proximity to me, less so if it was an optician or assistant.

Oh, a receptionist in Specsavers was chewing Juicy Fruit. There's a lesson to be learned for everyone here - you can still buy Juicy Fruit.

I wouldn't like it, but if the service was good then I would go back. I wouldn't want to hear chewing whilst having my eye checked.

I was a receptionist in a solicitors in quite a posh area when I was pregnant and I chewed gum sometimes because I had all-day nausea and was off most food and drinks so sometimes chewing gum was the only thing I could do to ward off hunger pangs and not have a desert for a mouth. And idgaf what any of the snobby clients might have thought, I needed that gum

I think this is somewhat unprofessional TBH .Most Opticians would not allow this (My friend is a Dispensing Optician).When you say "cheap Optician " how are their glasses/lenses?. SS is available UK wide ,and their products are very good value .All very professional not a gum chewer in sight!

I take tablets that dry my mouth out and I discreetly chew gum. I am customer facing. My boss has never commented on it but I will happily tell her why if anyone ever complains!
