EleanorReally · 18/08/2019 08:34

she was so uncouth though

OP posts:
WanderingTrolley1 · 18/08/2019 08:35

Not professional at all.

letsdolunch321 · 18/08/2019 08:41

Was she blowing bubbles with the gum?

sleepwhenimred · 18/08/2019 08:47

Maybe they'd just had a coffee break or lunch and were trying to spare you from the resulting bad breath?

EleanorReally · 18/08/2019 08:48

She might have just had lunch

RedSheep73 · 18/08/2019 08:48

Does gum interfere with your ability to assess vision then? what a snobby attitude.

EleanorReally · 18/08/2019 08:48

i wouldnt have put it past her to blow bubbles

OP posts:
EleanorReally · 18/08/2019 08:49

I will report back when we go back

OP posts:
EleanorReally · 18/08/2019 08:49

i think it is unprofessional

OP posts:
BuckingFrolics · 18/08/2019 08:49

Might have been nicotine gum. Ffs

MrsZola · 18/08/2019 08:51

Why is everybody being so shitty? Very unprofessional - and not snobby at all to be put off by it!

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 18/08/2019 08:55

What do you mean by a ‘cheap optician’? Surely the cost of an eye test is the same everywhere, unless to pay privately. It’s the lenses and frames that are expensive and you don’t have to choose expensive.

recrudescence · 18/08/2019 08:56

I agree that would be a bit off putting but, if her fee was competitive and she knew what she was doing, I’d find a way to manage.

EleanorReally · 18/08/2019 08:57

cheap frames,

HelloMrDinosaur · 18/08/2019 08:57

God how can people be bothered to give shit like this a second thought

RedSheep73 · 18/08/2019 09:02

Honestly you all sound like my mother in 1983. Unless she was blowing a bubble in your face, I fail to see the problem? it's just like those threads claiming no one can possibly do their job if their toes are visible. If you don't like it don't go back, but be honest about your reason. If the person does their job competently, and their only fault is transgressing one of your social norms, you are being a snob.

EleanorReally · 18/08/2019 09:03

so what if i am being a snob, in your opinion

OP posts:
Flerkin · 18/08/2019 09:03

Who makes the rule that chewing gum is 'unprofessional'?

DtPeabodysLoosePants · 18/08/2019 09:12

Ugh. I have misophonia and have huge issues with people masticating anywhere near me. Did she look and sound like a cow chewing the cud?
Chewing gum was common when I was little and therefore I'd consider it unprofessional too.

EleanorReally · 18/08/2019 09:14

me too, i had it dt
i had lunch with a colleague and her friend came too, opening chewing her food. i could not join them to eat Ever again

I have a lack of saliva in my mouth and the dental hospital told me it had to be sugar free gum, no mints, no polos (my absolute favourites) nothing but gum.

I volunteer in a primary school where obviously gum is banned but I spoke with SLT to explain that I sometimes need to chew gum but I do it very discreetly. As in, I don't make noise doing it.

For people to be customer facing I wouldn't have thought chewing gum would be acceptable. There are fruity chewing gums (I prefer mint) rather than it being bubble gum which is for bubble blowing.

Cannyhandleit · 18/08/2019 09:16

The last time I went to the optician his breath was stinking. I would have been very happy if he was chewing gum.

RedSheep73 · 18/08/2019 09:16

If you prefer 'yabu' to snob, fine. YABU.
