AIBU to be annoyed with dh?

He has taken dc to captain candy in Dubrovnik Croatia which is essentially a pick n mix place. He bought three bags of sweets and it came to £99.

The price is unclear and it is a tourist trap.

If anyone goes to captain candy please avoid.

I can't believe it still.

Ridiculous!

I’ve seen these shops in Pula. They were about every 500 yards 🙈. Just got back from Spain, saw them there too!

There’s a shop on princes st in Edinburgh selling a bag of crisps for 9.99... they owners were in the local paper the other day totally unrepentant!

WhenWillItBeCold · 17/08/2019 14:39

@BooksAreMyOnlyFriends what a great idea!

theWarOnPeace · 17/08/2019 14:43

We went to a place like this before, I think maybe Prague. I was merrily chucking in all the funky sweets, then it started to dawn on me that the prices were not adding up right in my head. Had to rethink the money vs pounds and tot it all up again. £40+ quid worth of sweets got plonked back on the counter I’m afraid.

theWarOnPeace · 17/08/2019 14:49

Yes Books we do this too! Not tonnes of stuff, but Disney colouring books/pyjamas/soaps and flannels. They are always allowed to choose one toy on the last day at Disney, but it has to be something you can’t get in the U.K./disney shop, and fit in their own backpack. One of my kids chose Toy Story chopsticks last time so were about £7. I have friends that manage to spend terrifying amounts at Disney, but for us it always works out not too bad. They get suckered in!

CornishMaid1 · 17/08/2019 15:44

I would have had to walk out. I couldn't have brought myself to spend that much. That is why I like Wilko pick n mix - price per cup regardless of how much you fit in (the key is to fill the gaps in the big sweets with little ones to get the most in!).

The Lindt pick n mix at the outlets are great (love mango and citrus) but expensive. For anyone going, 8 lindor is 100g.

Can't wait for the haribo store to open at the outlet but I think I may end up spending a fortune!

fuzzyduck1 · 17/08/2019 17:22

Got caught by a pick and mix at Bristol balloon festival one year the bill came to £25 for a bag of pick and mix.
Lucky the kid working on the stall couldn’t add up I gave him £40 he gave me £35 change ??? So couldn’t complain.

DanceItOut · 17/08/2019 17:26

£99 is crazy! We have been in Sweden this week and at a large store in örebro we got 4 large bags of pick n mix for about £12. I worked out the conversion from SEK to GBP and it was about 35p per 100g! Bargain!!!

Poochandmutt · 17/08/2019 17:37

I would of refused to pay ,if the price was not displayed

Whitney168 · 17/08/2019 17:51

It's interesting that a business model that banks on people being too embarrassed to say 'you must be joking' and walk out is obviously working.

I wonder what they actually do when people do that, as am sure some must - not least because some people must be incapable of paying that for a few small bags of sweets.

Utter daylight robbery.

professionalnomad · 17/08/2019 17:52

Just moved to a small seaside town outside Istanbul. Only domestic tourism so very cheap. We went to an ice cream shop and the twat tried to charge me 25tl for a scoop of mediocre ice cream which is almost 4 gbp. For reference - a scoop of ice cream on this boardwalk normally costs 2.5 tl! Got to love foreigner tax!

HeadintheiClouds · 17/08/2019 17:57

I literally wouldn’t be able to eat those now, they’d fecking choke me on the way down. But then I wouldn’t have handed over a hundred quid for them, however embarrassing it might have been or however many disappointed kids I had with me.

stopitandtidyupp · 17/08/2019 18:05

Reading trip advisor someone got told they couldn't return the sweets due to potential allergies.

I wonder what they would have done?

Invisimamma · 17/08/2019 18:06

Sounds like this place that has just opened in Edinburgh. £10 for a bag of Cheetos, £5 for a can of monster.

HopelessLayout · 17/08/2019 18:17

There's a cafe in Brick Lane where you can buy a bowl of breakfast cereal for in the region of a fiver… a bargain compared to some of your stories! Guess that explains why it's still going after a few years!

diddl · 17/08/2019 18:27

Was there some charge for paying by CC?

What was the local price per 100g?

Tinyandpetite · 17/08/2019 18:29

I can see all the photos OP, I’m absolutely disgusted on your behalf.

user1485851222 · 17/08/2019 18:30

Did you pay in kunas, or on your credit card?????

rubyroot · 17/08/2019 18:35

Should have read the Google reviews first. If I had git there and the sweets had cost that much, I would have left the sweets where they were and left.

SauvignonBlanche · 17/08/2019 18:37

IIRC there were no prices displayed (giveaway with hindsight).
I paid in Kuna and remember feeling confused and handed over a note thinking that I’d got the exchange rate wrong as it couldn’t possibly be that much.

Once I’d stepped out of the shop and got a signal on my phone I checked a currency converter and I’d been correct. I felt a right muppet! Blush

CampfireZen · 17/08/2019 18:37

Those pink foamy shrimp things in a pick-n-mix are, without a shred of doubt, the work of Beelzebub.

Nobody will ever convince me otherwise.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 17/08/2019 18:40

@percheron67. I’d expect a share in the company. I don’t know about 3 sacks

SauvignonBlanche · 17/08/2019 18:42

Should have read the Google reviews first

That’s probably of great help to the OP Hmm

Want2727 · 17/08/2019 18:45

I remember getting three ice creams for £15 in London and feeling sick when they said the price

percheron67 · 17/08/2019 18:46

Awwlookatmybabyspider: I shall raise my expectations now!
