AIBU to be annoyed with dh?

He has taken dc to captain candy in Dubrovnik Croatia which is essentially a pick n mix place. He bought three bags of sweets and it came to £99.

The price is unclear and it is a tourist trap.

If anyone goes to captain candy please avoid.

I can't believe it still.

Ridiculous!

Wow that's extortionate. I'd be fuming with DP. That's two weeks grocery budget for three of us.

LuckyAmy1986 · 17/08/2019 08:56

I would have felt too sick to eat anything for the rest of the week

Why?

BooksAreMyOnlyFriends · 17/08/2019 08:59

I can see all pics. Do they even taste good, op??

I hate being ripped off. I haven't bought pick 'n' mix since I watched a boy pop a sweet in his mouth then spit it out and put it back, circa 1980. Looks like he's saved me a lot of money.

CottonSock · 17/08/2019 09:05

Thanks for pics op. I'm never buying pic and mix again unless it's the measured in a cup type. Outraged on your behalf

BillywilliamV · 17/08/2019 09:09

Whereas I was forced into purchasing my very own pick and mix cup in Tesco this week, because my DD had one and it was one cup for £3, two cups for £4!

Don’t all rush at once..

StCharlotte · 17/08/2019 09:17

When Woolies was closing down I bought I whole shallow (wholesale) cardboard box full of strawberry bon bons for a few quid.

My dad bought a shed load of barley sugar from a shop that was closing down. He died a few months later. Four years down the line when Mum was selling the house we were still finding them! VFM.

Ash39 · 17/08/2019 09:21

Harry Potter shop in Edinburgh- single "chocolate frog" for £5.99.

It was basically a Freddo

Ash39 · 17/08/2019 09:22

Oh! And four gummy worms from Animal Kingdom in Disneyworld- $8.99

dentydown · 17/08/2019 09:25

I did the opposite. Woolworths did mini flumps in the pick and mix. I filled the bag up to the top and paid 30p! I was a happy kid!

Violashift · 17/08/2019 09:30

Dh said he just panicked and paid. The dc stood their all excited. He said he just wanted to get out of there. I would have done the same.

I am surprised the shop was so busy. The sweets taste cheap.

That is absolutely ridiculous and I'd be gutted. I hate being ripped off. We have recently returned from Disney World and I found that the over inflated prices actually tarnished the experience. I expected to pay a premium, but £4 per bottle of water was astronomical and such a rip off.

Whatsername7 · 17/08/2019 10:02

Posted too soon. I feel sorry for your dh - I would have done the same.

Buyitinbamboo · 17/08/2019 10:07

I would have done the same as your DH. I've learnt to not buy olives from markets anymore after paying about £15 for a tiny tub a few times

PooWillyBumBum · 17/08/2019 10:11

I've just googled it and think I can see your review on Tripadvisor! Ouch. To be honest I think it could happen to anyone - you don't expect it to be so expensive, get to the till and are too embarrassed not to go through with it. Would also be livid, though.

Buyitinbamboo, I too no longer support local 'Italian/French/whatever' markets that sell olives/bread/sweets. Eye watering.

PancakeAndKeith · 17/08/2019 10:17

I am surprised the shop was so busy. The sweets taste cheap.

The thing is they aren’t relying on repeat custom. They are relying on holiday happy parents and begging children.

I don’t understand the number of people talking about Euros in relation to Dubrovnik.
We were there for a week and I didn’t see a single place with prices in Euros. In fact I only saw signs saying ‘we don’t take Euros’. I assumed it was for the benefit of cruise passengers.

transformandriseup · 17/08/2019 10:19

Omg that’s awful. I love pick and mix and came out with a massive bag for about £5 from the retro sweet shop in Bude.

HuggedTheRedwoods · 17/08/2019 11:45

@Badwifey Same happened to us a few years ago, shop near Ponte Vecchio. Even for a tourist area we were really ripped off, same situation separate queue to pay and the misleading board prices referred to small tubs apparrently when most people bought cones. Saw others leaving the shop with the same look of horror too. A while later it made the papers in one of those "tourists charged £50 for cornet" type of stories and I think the police were involved in the end. Been back to Florence many times but never bought gelato in the centre since!

PS - OP, I've seen your photos on ever post! Feel really sorry for you all as it doesn't feel nice but just think of how many years you'll be able to trot out this tale - your great grandchildren will probably be repeating it in years to come!

beepbeeprichie · 17/08/2019 12:15

Oh OP!! Poor you and poor DH! Hopefully it doesn’t spoil any more of your holiday and gives you something to laugh about later. Forevermore using it as a price comparison when discussing purchases! Grin

BooksAreMyOnlyFriends · 17/08/2019 12:46

I detest being ripped off.

When we did Disney when the dcs were little, I told them wouldn't be going in the shops because when we got back to the hotel we would have special surprises from the gift shop placed in our room.

I actually sneakily packed a load of Disney theme stationery, books, colouring, toys, pjs, sweets etc that I bought beforehand from Poundland, Primark etc, and each day I 'found' them when we got back to the hotel.

It worked a treat. We didn't set foot in any of the shops.

Owlbabie5 · 17/08/2019 12:50

Jesus I only spent £24 on 3 bags of pic and mix in Dylan’s Candy Bar NYC which was £££££. What kind of sweets are they?Shock

gingersausage · 17/08/2019 12:52

You don’t have to pay $4 a bottle for water in WDW. Go to Walmart and buy a case for that much and take it in with you. It’s really not the same situation at all.

Aragog · 17/08/2019 12:55

We have recently returned from Disney World and I found that the over inflated prices actually tarnished the experience. I expected to pay a premium, but £4 per bottle of water

Take a water bottle and ask for a free 'tap' refill. It's free. Or use the water drinking fountains. Though their water can taste a little odd in my experience though it's perfectly drinkable.

Owlbabie5 · 17/08/2019 12:56

If it makes you feel better we got stung for fries in a very posh town sea food ‘shack’ by the coast in Maine. $10 each!!!!! Shock They were more than the seafoodI, we couldn’t work out the cost as had focused on the seafood prices.BlushI think most of us have been had at some point on holiday.

Soubriquet · 17/08/2019 12:58

I love my local sweet shop

They will sell you pic and mix bags by the price!

So you can ask for £5 worth of cola bottles, and she will do it!

I would have walked out though if someone tried to charge me £99 on sweets

stayathomer · 17/08/2019 13:14

BooksAreMyOnlyFriends EPIC idea!!!
