I've just seen a trailer for a new Channel 4 programme. It's called 'Train Your baby Like a Dog' AIBU that this is a terrible idea ?

OP posts:

Horrific idea.

treeplop · 16/08/2019 19:40

Great idea.

Puppy: Small totally dependent creature that doesn't understand you and you don't understand it.

Well, I think it sounds brilliant. Two years I've been getting no smug mum points for DD putting raw liver in her mouth and trying to lick her own bottom, and I feel I deserve the credit now.

pinkpinkblue · 16/08/2019 19:59

There was already a thread about this the other day. Personally I think it's a great idea 😂

fortheloveofPete · 16/08/2019 20:02

Same level of discipline, same consistency in training/teaching.

I can see the similarly to be honest, and at times it felt the bloody same too.

BertieBotts · 16/08/2019 20:04

It's clearly set up to be controversial.

Passthecherrycoke · 16/08/2019 20:07

I’ll be watching

TabbyMumz · 16/08/2019 20:08

My parents said to me "make sure you train your baby, before it trains you". I think they had a good point.

Alarmclockstop · 16/08/2019 20:09

Brilliant thread already, sorry op you are late to the party

SnuggyBuggy · 16/08/2019 20:09

I know some people think of their dogs as babies but not the other way round

Dogdogcat · 16/08/2019 20:10

My 15 month old begs fruit from me when I'm getting his breakfast ready. I slip a blueberry in his mouth, pat him on his head and send him on his way.

forkfun · 16/08/2019 20:12

@SarahAndQuack please write a parenting bible

Pjsandbaileys · 16/08/2019 20:22

Definitely never achieved this one, children are almost adults and seem to have evolved in decent people but i had many occasions of them being feral. My bloody dog is tge same haha

SarahAndQuack · 16/08/2019 20:28

I really should, fork.

I'm not even kidding when I say her first (unintentional) weaning food was the meal worms in the suet ball we bought for the robins.

Cinammoncake · 16/08/2019 21:10

There's a petition against this programme on change.org (not sure how to link it)

OpheliaTodd · 17/08/2019 11:22

Can’t find the other thread but I’m looking forward to the programme.

Jo-Rosie is an awesome trainer, and from what I’ve seen is also a fab mum. Learning theory is exactly the same across all species and it’ll be fascinating to see how animal training principles work on small humans 😁

Mrsjayy · 17/08/2019 11:26

Dog no VS toddler no it's the same thing really I saw the trailer thought it was genuis I probably brought my dc up similar 😁

DuckWillow · 17/08/2019 11:29

Is attachment theory the same too?

I think before calling this “a great idea”:people need to read “Why Love Matters: The Importance of Affection in Shaping a Baby’s Brain”.

Affection means more than training a baby to stay in its crib .

It means responding proactively and teaching the baby the world is a safe place to be with caregivers who will respond when there is a need.

I will watch but I am suspicious of anything which doesn’t recognise babies are not dogs.

Mrsjayy · 17/08/2019 11:33

Puppies need attachment too for brain development or their wiring goes to pot just like humans.

Cinammoncake · 17/08/2019 11:33

On the petition website (sorry, I hope someone else can link it as I'm not sure how to?) it explains how a previous 'experiment' of this nature led the children to have ptsd. Also that it leaves them open to abuse in later life if they are 'trained' rather than trusting their own instincts. I think it's highly dangerous and chilling to make people think babies should be treated like this.

Mrsjayy · 17/08/2019 11:41

Oh my god that was a 1930 something experiment John Bowby did about maternal deprivation no wonder those children suffered trauma this is a ch4 programme . People really need to stop being so melodramatic!

picklemepopcorn · 17/08/2019 11:42

Positive reinforcement, distraction when misbehaving, recognising the need for a balance of sleep, fresh air, exercise, play and food. Sounds good to me.

Assuming we're taking about 'good' dog training, that is!

BertieBotts · 17/08/2019 12:00

I suppose that remains to be seen (whether it is really "good dog training")

There are positive things you can take from modern dog training theory which work well for young children as well - noticing small steps towards what you want and marking/rewarding that, preventing opportunity for misbehaviour, the need for stimulation/exercise/affection/security, the concept of "incompatible behaviours".

The trailer doesn't look as though it goes remotely into those topics though, which is presumably the point.

DioneTheDiabolist · 17/08/2019 12:03

DS2 is part pup, around 30% I think.Grin So I'll be watching.
