I've just seen a trailer for a new Channel 4 programme. It's called 'Train Your baby Like a Dog' AIBU that this is a terrible idea ?

John Bowby took his research from a 1930s experiment sorry my post was garbled rubbish. My point is how can petitions go round using emotive language based on a 2 minute trailer which clearly is meant to mislead,

AnnaMagnani · 17/08/2019 12:10

I have cats not dogs.

It was when they were kittens and trying to convince me that all foods were inedible poison and somehow I ended up buying them organic catfood that I bought on the internet from Canada while I was eating beans on toast that I realised the similarities between kittens and toddlers.

Two days of starvation later and they were back on Go-cat and I didn't fall for it again.

Sounds like a controversial name for a likely sensible programme.

I just have visions of programme followers saying ' Well I put him in the crate in the morning with a biscuit and popped back at lunch time to let him out for a wee ..'

Oh FFS. Clearly it’s a title designed to create a discussion. And it’s rhetorical.

Maybe try watching it before cussing it.

slashlover · 17/08/2019 21:49

The blurb I read says it's more about positive reinforcement than punishing bad behaviour.

CheerfulMuddler · 17/08/2019 21:52

I use "No!" to DS in pretty much the same tones I would to a dog, tbf.
And I've always said he needs exercising twice a day or he starts destroying the house ...

Toffeecakes · 17/08/2019 22:08

The advert I saw for this showed clicker training, I commented on the other thread. A sick way to treat children.

OpheliaTodd · 17/08/2019 22:13

Actually there is a human version of clicker training called TAG teach. Nothing sick about it. You’re showing your ignorance there I’m afraid.

uppershopping · 22/08/2019 19:31

I'm watching and it's fab!!!

I agree with PP that said puppies and babies aren't that different; small dependant mammal that doesn't understand verbal communication yet etc.

The lady is making loads of sense and is kind.

OpheliaTodd · 22/08/2019 20:05

Yes it was fab. I imagine that the people who were frothing at the mouth over this (without even seeing it) are now feeling rather silly.

uppershopping · 23/08/2019 06:00

Yeah it's annoying that people complain before seeing it! Watch it, then decide!

Such a load of knee jerk reactions! I bet these same people don't like to think of themselves as animals and more as a higher being. Incorrect!

eeksville · 23/08/2019 06:16

If you actually watch it most of the techniques are not that different to ones suggested in other programmes. Eg giving a fussy baby a variety of finger food to try.

TipseyTorvey · 23/08/2019 06:24

I thought it was a brilliant programme, although I admit I only tuned in because of all the controversy. She was very kind and it all made complete sense to me. I certainly bribed mine using chocolate buttons when potty training and they don't demand them for every poo now so the positive association must have worked. I will be looking into this further as my youngest has definitely been training me instead of the other way round which has put us in some ridiculous situations eg having to make him spag bol every evening as opposed to the meal plan.

EleanorReally · 23/08/2019 06:52

AGree it is just a selling point.
programme was described to me, and it didnt sound like dog training!

OneOfTheGrundys · 23/08/2019 07:11

I thought it was excellent. The focus on building trust and a sense of safety with primary caregiver was spot on imo. And compatible with the limited knowledge I have of attachment theory. (Not attachment parenting I think).
Thing is, there are plenty of ways to raise a dog and those who went a bit frothy at the mention of the title and clicker maybe had a different view on what those were. I know the issues with the clicker exist in the autistic community and I can’t imagine the trauma that may cause to some. However, in this show it was used as a single strategy amongst many others to model and treat behaviours that eventually would make the child much happier! Toddlers need baths and drying and to learn to interact kindly and gently. Clickers may not be suitable for all children; my DS with HFA would not have been a suitable candidate for example and his attachment to us needed developing very differently. DS1 though? Perfect candidate. 😂

OneOfTheGrundys · 23/08/2019 07:14

Yes and the tapas meal at bedtime. Genius. Child retains sense of control within limits.
Though I can imagine my HFA lovely DS still only wanting cheese. 😂

TipseyTorvey · 23/08/2019 10:54

Oh I don't know. My hfa DS might just go for that tapas idea! He's very resistant to being told what's for dinner despite me meal planning and pre warning him. I might give it a go as I'll try anything once!

OneOfTheGrundys · 23/08/2019 12:45

Ha Tipsey ! Yes. May bring some change to being asked “What’s for dinner?” 3 times an hour. During the term it’s better as he can see the school menu and meal planning menu a week ahead.

Pinkblueberry · 23/08/2019 12:48

Meh, they always choose titles like this to cause outrage and gather attention - it probably isn’t as extreme as it sounds.

Pinkblueberry · 23/08/2019 12:48

Oh has it been on already?
