WIBU to insist on this pram?

aliensprig · 14/08/2019 09:15

I really, really want a Bugaboo Fox. In the reviews it ticks all the boxes for me: sturdy, lightweight, all-terrain, great storage and obviously pretty damn gorgeous!!

BUT DH doesn't think we should spend a grand on something we'll only use for about three years and wants us to get something second hand. He doesn't understand that there are literally billions of types out there, and some of the cheaper brands are cheap for a reason!

Also he won't ever be pushing the damn thing - I don't drive, and will be doing A LOT of walking with it. We live in a hilly town with some rural areas, so just buying something at random from the Argos catalogue isn't going to cut it. It needs to be light, easily folded, have good storage and be able to tackle mud, uneven ground, hills and busy streets.

WIBU to just buy the Fox regardless? We're not rich by any means, but we're not poor either, we can afford it. Plus I expect my parents will want to cover half the cost. Or should I compromise and get something cheaper like the baby jogger city mini? I don't like that it's forward facing only, but it's another all-terrain and my husband is more likely to agree on that one...

You just don't know what you are going to want, that's the problem. We had a £1k travel system and I used it every day for 2 years, then dd2 came along and I swapped to a double for a bit then we were back with the original for another 18 months. If we'd bought a cheaper one would it have lasted? No idea. My SIL used the carrycot full time when DN arrived, she got a mattress that was suitable for nighttime sleep, so that got another 6 months use!

But for every person like me, there is someone who gets cross with the big heavy travel system, doesn't want to pull it apart to put in the car and switches to a stroller ASAP. If you don't drive you're probably less likely to be that person.

NoSauce · 14/08/2019 10:32

Buy cheap buy twice.

Get the pram OP!

AngelasAshes · 14/08/2019 10:34

YABU to make a £1k purchase without DH agreeing. That sets a very bad precedent. Next thing you know he will be spending £1k on a VR game system or somesuch and your lack of agreement will not matter.

You should have at least tried to find one second hand.

It’s not good for any relationship for partners to think they can spend that kind of money even if the other disagrees.

AmIRightOrAMeringue · 14/08/2019 10:34

Hi OP

Most people I know bought a fancy pram from new....then as soon as baby was around 18 months they binned it off and switched to a lightweight buggy as so much lighter and easy to fold and convenient.

This means Facebook is absolutely full of prams and travel systems that havent been used much, at really cheap prices.

Only time I'd spend a lot of money on a pram is if it's so lightweight it's a cross between a buggy and a pram and you're not likely to swap it, and you're planning more than one child so will get say 5 continuous years out of it, then it may be worth it

When ours was 18 months we got a second hand micralite ultralite or something off Ebay, was 30 quid and immediately stopped using the pram, it folds in seconds and wheels are so big compared to the pram it's amazing, I have gone long walks on rocky footpaths on it

If you're into off road walks I'd also consider a sling/ carrier (I got a baby Bjorn of Facebook for a fiver, clean and worked fine), much easier if very hilly and uneven

EmbarrassingMama · 14/08/2019 10:35

My NCT of 8 bought 5 Bugaboo Bee’s and 3 Bugaboo Chameleons. All 3 that bought the Chamelion have sold it before the kids were one to buy smaller buggies. The Bee keepers (ha!), are still raving about theirs. The Chameleon is MASSIVE and won’t go through double doors unless you open both (which, when you’re out alone with your babe you’ll realised is hard).

The Fox is even wider than a Chameleon. It looks fab, but I’d wager you’ll have sold it before the baby is 1. If you must insist on it, but it second hand. At least that way you can recoup your money. And it doesn’t matter how well off you are - there’s always something better to spend £1k on.

Congratulations on your pregnancy.

AmIRightOrAMeringue · 14/08/2019 10:37

Also something you can push one handed is very handy. For umbrellas / drinks / answering phone / holding a lids hand if they want to walk etc

nuggles · 14/08/2019 10:39

I bought the bugaboo chameleon travel system for a grand and absolutely love it.

Almost three kids (due soon) use out of it and definitely feel we've got our monies worth. We also bought a buggy board after DC2 was born and it fits perfectly.

Have used 'off road' rural setting on it too and still moves fab.

My favourite thing about the bugaboo is it feels sturdy - plus lots of basket space if you like shopping!

EllesBells123 · 14/08/2019 10:42

If people don't walk much they maybe won't see the benefit of spending good money on a decent travel system. I walk everywhere, so out the house at least 2 hours walking everyday. £1000 is about right. We have cheaper prams for travelling but you get what you pay for and you will notice the difference if you go cheaper.

You can't just buy it without your husband's approval but maybe discuss your predicament with your parents to see if they want to help. Might take the sting out of it for DH. Otherwise you'll just have to show him that £1000 really is the market average if you want something decent.

caperplips · 14/08/2019 10:42

EmbarrassingMama again that was not our experience of the Chameleon. It was not 'massive' and we never had any bother fitting it through doors in the UK, Ireland, Australia, Canada, USA and Thailand Hmm

I don't think there is any comparison between a decent stroller and an umbrella stroller for the comfort of the child sitting in it for long periods.

I guess we all have different things that we look for when it comes to buggys.

OP speak to your husband , go for a test wheel of a few styles you like. I hope you get the one you love!

SleepingStandingUp · 14/08/2019 10:45

Why won't your DH be pushing it?

CatteStreet · 14/08/2019 10:46

Sling/carrier (not the Baby Björn, it doesn't support their hips and is a killer on your back) for the first year (give or take). Then something smaller/lighter. I used the Marsupi carrier with my latter two, for 7-ish months with middle one before swapping to a Manduca to 18mo+, all the way up to 18mo+ with the little one. Then they just went in a Maclaren (Quest for middle one, second-hand nearly-new Techno for youngest - big age gap), which is great for hoiking up and down train station stairs and getting onto buses without needing to fold. A back carrier for offroad stuff (some use the Manduca as a back carrier too). With the middle one I had a very old but working second-hand pram that I used in the buggy position with a buggy board for eldest sometimes. Prob spent less on all that together than the total cost of the pram you want.

SeriouslyEnoughAlreadyRantOver · 14/08/2019 10:46

I never got the point of lightweight strollers with any of mine, and I tried a few. Even in airports, which have the easiest floors to navigate, they still not better than a proper pram as they collapse as soon as the child gets up if you put a bag on them.

I think I tried to travel once with a light version, McLaren or Silvercross, can't remember, as I was worried to damage my expensive one, but understood my mistake and never bothered again!

Someone who takes the bus and never goes outside won't have the same need as someone who trek outdoors and doesn't bother with public transport. Only buy the buggy you need, not the fashionable one. Even a Bugaboo bee is too light and not practical for me, and I think Bugaboos are great.

sheshootssheimplores · 14/08/2019 10:48

I think you’re being ridiculous.

daisypond · 14/08/2019 10:51

I walked everywhere as we didn’t have a car. Sling for a baby and then a lightweight stroller. Never had a pram.

TatianaLarina · 14/08/2019 10:51

I don’t think anyone can answer that OP, it’s between you and your husband.

Two things though -

  1. he needs to push the pram too
  2. you need to learn to drive
Platypusmama · 14/08/2019 10:53

It’s not that lightweight! I actually fell with it the other day Blush check out the bugaboo ant! I’m selling my fox so I can get one of them.

KUGA · 14/08/2019 10:54

UABU.
If you have that amount of money to waste, set up a bank account for the child.
Your husband is totally right.

Celebelly · 14/08/2019 10:54

Our BabyJogger is amazing. I have another more expensive pram and the BabyJogger pisses all over it. More expensive pram has been relegated to emergency pram and for nipping to shops. We have a lie flat car seat that attaches to BabyJogger so DD will parent face for quite a while longer.

NerrSnerr · 14/08/2019 10:55

So many people are saying just to get it as if £1000 is pocket money. Can you actually afford it OP? Can your parents afford to shell out £500 on your pram (Or are you just assuming they'll pay?)

Sicktobloodydeath · 14/08/2019 10:56

I can’t believe people are saying YABU.
YAabsolutelynotBU. I wouldn’t even say a grand is a lot to spend on a pram Confused go with what you want if you can afford it. We’ve just collected our pram for which we paid £1700, we only spent this amount because it’s a gorgeous pram and what we wanted. £1000 is more than reasonable and your husband sounds a bit deluded!

This is amazing! I bought this and was so glad I did!'

Angelil · 14/08/2019 10:57

YABU to spend that amount of money when the Quinny Zapp Flex Plus does everything you say for under half the money. My lifestyle sounds very similar to yours (lots of walking with baby) and I have been so happy with it.
You need to do more research.

Celebelly · 14/08/2019 10:58

Also with the travel systems, look up the car seats that come with them Many of them (no idea about Bugaboo specifically) are only tested to pass minimum safety standards and you can get much safer and better options that you can then attach with adaptors. Our

Angelil · 14/08/2019 10:59

I also DEFINITELY second the Mountain Buggy. I have used it before (having rented it when abroad). It's brilliant as well.

Gruntvsgunt · 14/08/2019 10:59

I got a Donkey. It’s well worth the money IMO. Had other buggies before I went Bugaboo and I’d never go back.
Honestly I know it’s a lot but I’d pay it just for how bloody lovely and light they are to push
