WIBU to insist on this pram?

I really, really want a Bugaboo Fox. In the reviews it ticks all the boxes for me: sturdy, lightweight, all-terrain, great storage and obviously pretty damn gorgeous!!

BUT DH doesn't think we should spend a grand on something we'll only use for about three years and wants us to get something second hand. He doesn't understand that there are literally billions of types out there, and some of the cheaper brands are cheap for a reason!

Also he won't ever be pushing the damn thing - I don't drive, and will be doing A LOT of walking with it. We live in a hilly town with some rural areas, so just buying something at random from the Argos catalogue isn't going to cut it. It needs to be light, easily folded, have good storage and be able to tackle mud, uneven ground, hills and busy streets.

WIBU to just buy the Fox regardless? We're not rich by any means, but we're not poor either, we can afford it. Plus I expect my parents will want to cover half the cost. Or should I compromise and get something cheaper like the baby jogger city mini? I don't like that it's forward facing only, but it's another all-terrain and my husband is more likely to agree on that one...

Some parents love slings, I hated the damn things, never used them for any of my 4 unless I really had to.

A buggy is so much easier and practical when you are out. It's a sad day when your youngest outgrows them and you have to start using backpacks and carry everything instead.

Belindabelle · 14/08/2019 10:10

I would get it. If you use it for 3 years that works out at less than 1 pound a day. I got a cheaper stroller for holidays etc but still used the big pram until DS was almost 3.

Megan2018 · 14/08/2019 10:11

Have the one that you want.

We spent a over a grand on ours - not the fox but the icandy all terrain.

We are only having one baby and we want to have what we want, if you were getting in to debt for it then I;d say differently, but you can afford it so put your foot down.

kidsdoingmyheadin · 14/08/2019 10:11

They are certainly easier to push than strollers. The reason I switched though is because of the size, if you’re going to a packed tiny tunes or hopping on the bus or brunch etc. you just want something narrow & foldable.

Putapeonyinyourpocket · 14/08/2019 10:12

I brought the donkey and love it! I have a tall one year old and he still had plenty of room in it, the basket is fab for popping to the shops. If you can afford it, do it. My sister brought her buffalo second hand for 500 and it was fantastic.

kidsdoingmyheadin · 14/08/2019 10:13

Also if you travel eg city breaks or UK seaside the pavement is generally very narrow & a stroller is much easier to navigate.

Lunafortheloveogod · 14/08/2019 10:14

Get what you want but be smart about it!

There’s loads of reconditioned second hand bugaboos for peanuts compared to new, you can usually get new colour packs too so it’d look just like a new one bar the tires.. which will wear anyway.

My tale of caution is getting a beautiful classic type expensive pram massive carrycot as I come from a family of big babies, good big wheels, bouncy suspension, giant basket that holds everything and more.. matching car seat for the pretty factor.. and I’m pregnant again within 5 months so I’ll need to get a double after getting about 10-11 months out of our posh pram.
Ironically my second choice was a donkey Grin.. could’ve just bought the kit to make it a double

mamaoffourdc · 14/08/2019 10:15

Mountain buggy's are awesome!!!

Potatopia · 14/08/2019 10:16

Try the cameleon 3, they are similar and available second hand much cheaper.

PBobs · 14/08/2019 10:16

I agree that Mountain Buggy is a fantastic, real all terrain option. Plus more affordable. I tried Bugaboos in store when I bought our Mountain Buggy and I had the cash to buy any pushchair thing I wanted. Still chose the MB over the Bugaboo. Those things are massively cumbersome and clunky looking. Plus they don't drive anywhere near as well as MBs.

53rdWay · 14/08/2019 10:17

Maybe not that exact one (for £1000 I’d want it to be actually all-terrain for one thing) but YANBU to shell out on a decent pram that meets your requirements if you’ll be using it that much.

We don’t drive and spent about £400 on a Mountain Buggy. Narrow, folded fine, had decent wheels that could go anywhere. Used it for 3 years with DC1 then it was still in decent condition for the next baby. Never did move to a cheap stroller because there was no need. Definitely worth it.

MindyStClaire · 14/08/2019 10:18

Another thing I'd advise (especially if you have particular circumstances like needing to go off road) is to look around at what people near you are using. Around here I saw lots of babies in Uppababies and Silver Crosses, but plenty of toddlers in Uppababies and none in Silver Crosses. Seemed to me that the Silver Cross buyers were more likely to switch to a cheap stroller later on.

Chickychoccyegg · 14/08/2019 10:21

the people i know who've had bugaboo's all swapped for a desent stroller within a year. I could never justify that amount of money on a pram, there's fb pages where you can buy them brand new looking 2nd hand if thats something you would consider or look in shops lile morhercare where ypu can see and try a few to get an idea of alternatives at a better price, bugaboo's are only expensive becsuse of the name

transformandriseup · 14/08/2019 10:21

Can you find another pram that meets your needs for less money? If not then I would buy it.

Our was £950 in the Xmas sale but handles really well and has big wheels for country lanes. Plus the handle can be raised really high so it doesn’t hurt my DH’s back. We don’t plan on trying for another child until DD is 2.5 so we will use it again

Neolara · 14/08/2019 10:22

Spending £1k on a pram is insane IMO. Your outgoings are about to increase massively and, as a previous poster said, if you have a second baby fairly soon, you may well end up dumping this pram for a double.

randomsabreuse · 14/08/2019 10:22

How rural are you? Do any of your preferred routes involve kissing gates, stiles or just narrow paths.

Is your town flat or on the side of a hill?
Modern shopping centres or cute little cobbled side streets?

I live in a small market town on the side of a hill, surrounded by paths accessed by stiles and kissing gates.

The only pushchair I use Is the out and about nipper sport running buggy which is a revelation compared with anything else on rough terrain. Still wide and horrible on steps. Mostly I use the sling because all the quick routes have steps. The road routes are still steep and weight of the pram really counts up and down hill

caperplips · 14/08/2019 10:23

We had the Chameleon and never regretted it for a moment.
My main concern was the baby being comfortable and not being rattled about - some prams / strollers have terrible wheels and no suspension.

Anyway it was worth every penny to us and we loved it. DD used it until she was about 4 for city travel

It never gave a minutes trouble and it looked as good as new even after the extensive use we gave it including several long haul trips and loads of European flights

Nixen · 14/08/2019 10:23

Get the fox, it’s worth every penny! I love ours and so does DD😁

ChihuahuaMummy1 · 14/08/2019 10:23

We got a dupe of a Bugaboo from Amazon, cant remember the brand but it was the lightest pram/stroller ever and looked fab it was only £150 brand new.

Campurp · 14/08/2019 10:25

Get it if you can afford to and if you want it. Life's to short and people will always say you should buy a cheaper version or whatever, but it's your money and your baby essentially... (I have this buggy too and love it!)

caperplips · 14/08/2019 10:26

chickychoccegg this is the EXACT opposite of my experience!
Anyone I know who had a bugaboo used it from birth until the child no longer needed it.
On the other hand I have friends who bought cheaper solutions for various stages and had as many as 3 / 4 strollers over that same period which probably came close in cost anyway when all added up.

SleepIsForTheWeeak · 14/08/2019 10:26

I spent over a grand on a pram (a joolz) although I nearly got the bugaboo, I was torn. I used it for about 12 months with our first child, it was bulky and annoying. I then had my second child a few months after that and had to buy yet another pram (mountain buggy duet). The first pram looked pretty yes and it was stylish, but sooo impractical! My mountain buggy is far superior but it has zero style! I wish I'd gone for something really light and compact and could turn into a double pram from the beginning (and saved a grand!). If I was you and doing lots of walking I'd be looking more at off road type buggies. If it needs to go in a car think about compact fold, a bugaboo will fill an entire boot with a carrycot on.

BrokenWing · 14/08/2019 10:26

I don't think these bulky buggies are practical beyond around 18 months max. We regretted buying bought an expensive buggy, before ds was 18 months we'd completely switched to a McLaren umbrella fold as much more convenient for car, folding, storage space in house, public transport, shops where space was tight, carrying and you didn't care so much when it got sandy/muddy/wet.

caperplips · 14/08/2019 10:28

And I absolutely do not agree that bugaboos are only expensive because of the name. I promise I don't work for them Grin and my dc is a teen now anyway so I am long past this stage.
However - they are so well made and extremely comfortable for the child at all stages of use. Which was the main concern for us.
Added to that, they are very easy to handle for the person pushing it. It's win win for me.
I have pushed other buggys and there is no comparison. IMO

Mammyloveswine · 14/08/2019 10:28

Join the bugaboo Facebook page..people sell second hand bugaboos but they're really well looked after! I saw a fox less than a year old for 500 quid!
