WIBU to insist on this pram?

I really, really want a Bugaboo Fox. In the reviews it ticks all the boxes for me: sturdy, lightweight, all-terrain, great storage and obviously pretty damn gorgeous!!

BUT DH doesn't think we should spend a grand on something we'll only use for about three years and wants us to get something second hand. He doesn't understand that there are literally billions of types out there, and some of the cheaper brands are cheap for a reason!

Also he won't ever be pushing the damn thing - I don't drive, and will be doing A LOT of walking with it. We live in a hilly town with some rural areas, so just buying something at random from the Argos catalogue isn't going to cut it. It needs to be light, easily folded, have good storage and be able to tackle mud, uneven ground, hills and busy streets.

WIBU to just buy the Fox regardless? We're not rich by any means, but we're not poor either, we can afford it. Plus I expect my parents will want to cover half the cost. Or should I compromise and get something cheaper like the baby jogger city mini? I don't like that it's forward facing only, but it's another all-terrain and my husband is more likely to agree on that one...

Also its worth pointing out what happens if baby number 2 comes along in a year or 2's time? You will then need to replace the pram for one that can seat 2 children or possibly more depending on if you have multiples? So even if it does turn out to be a perfect pram you might only get a short amount of use out of it before having to sell it.

MonChatEstMagnifique · 14/08/2019 09:33

If his only reason against it is that he doesn't want to spend £1000 on something you'll 'only' use for 3 years then I'd tell him 3 years is a long time when you are using it every day. And he won't be the one using it as much as you. If you have the money, I'd get the one you want.

AlwaysColdHands · 14/08/2019 09:33

The fact you live rurally and it might be more likely to get mud etc on it is even more of a reason to not spend £1000, as you may be gutted when it starts to look scruffy and grubby quickly.
5 years ago we got second hand sturdy iCandy off eBay for £113 which included chassis, Pram top, pushchair seat, car seat adaptors, cosy toes thing and two different rain covers. Still going strong for DC2 after miles and miles of dog walking and mud 👍🏻
We could afford £1000 for a new one, but are of the view that it’s slightly ludicrous....
Also, surely if you just trot off and spend the money regardless that’s going to cause a bit of friction or the like? 🤔

Abouttimemum · 14/08/2019 09:34

Yes that’s exactly my boy. I think you’re pretty lucky if you have baby that likes being in its pram for long stretches day in day out. I’ve often been carrying a screaming baby and pushing an empty pram. Soul destroying haha.

hormonesorDHbeingadick · 14/08/2019 09:34

If you will be using public transport and rural areas then I don’t think the Fox is the right pram for you.

Tip - focus on the pushchair part as they will be in that much longer than the bassinet.

MeanMrMustardSeed · 14/08/2019 09:34

YANBU. I insisted on a bugaboo buffalo as that was perfect for us. We’ve covered upwards of a thousand miles and have never regretted it once. I’ve pushed cheap pushchairs and it’s not comfortable over long distances. If you are only walking to / from a car (like a lot of people!), buy anything, but if you’re walking miles a day, get the pushchair that suits your lifestyle.

OrangeSwoosh · 14/08/2019 09:35

At 8 months we're about to replace our large, cumbersome travel system with a lighter weight stroller...just like most people seem to.

If I can recoup £100-£150 by selling our all singing, all dancing, still in near perfect condition, originally £700 (bought on a good deal with £200 off) travel system, I'll be happy. It still has over 3 years warranty left on it too. You can get a lot for your money second hand when it comes to prams and pushchairs - and they're soon outgrown. My DS is near the weight limit at just 8 months.

Boysnme · 14/08/2019 09:36

I understand where you are coming from OP. It’s your first baby (I think) and you want the nice new shiny all singing and dancing pram. I was the same and we got the pram I so much wanted. 4 months later I hated it, it was so impractical and we bought a folding mclaren. I convinced myself it wasn’t a waste of money as we’d use it for number 2.

Number 2 came along quite quickly and we needed a double from day one so we got a baby jogger. When we no longer needed the double we replaced with a single baby jogger as the double was so good. Never looked back from that.

Sold the big heavy perfect pram that had only really been used for them to sleep in the carrycot and got hardly anything like what it was purchased for.

Looking back I wish I’d had the foresight to buy second hand or cheaper.

However if you can afford it and the money isn’t an issue then just get what you want. You might get perfect first time round.

amibeingacunexttuesday · 14/08/2019 09:36

Bugaboos are built to last and worth the investment if you are planning more children. I have seen second hand bugaboo foxes on eBay and bugaboo Facebook selling pages for around 500-600 pound which could be a compromise?

I love my bugaboo, worth every cent.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 14/08/2019 09:37

We spent a lot on a pram.
It was then used daily for 4-5 years and regularly for another 18onths after that. (2 children!) It then went into retirement at the local dogs home as a trainer pram (to get rescue dogs used to prams and walking with prams).
Chose carefully and it is worth

HoneysuckIejasmine · 14/08/2019 09:37

I'd get a mountain buggy or an out n about instead. Second hand. (My out n about is at least 3rd hand and the best thing ever).

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 14/08/2019 09:37

I’ve pushed cheap pushchairs and it’s not comfortable over long distances.
Not to pick holes but that's a heck of a sweeping statement. Hmm Just because something is expensive doesn't automatically make it better, some cheap pushchairs might not be comfortable to push over long distances but its not solely because they are cheap.

This myth that more expensive is better is stupid since 99% of the time you are paying for the name not an improved product.

Cyw2018 · 14/08/2019 09:37

Your DH is right.

Make a shortlist of suitable prams (rather than narrowing down to just the one) and then start looking for them coming up second hand.

You say you will use it for 3 years, you might find that is optimistic. We switched to using an umbrella fold stroller (that was free from my mum's ndn) 90% of the time when dd was about a year, and were using it for holidays before that as it left more spaced in the car boot.

MrsKittyFane1 · 14/08/2019 09:38

BertrandRussell · 14/08/2019 09:39

He’s vetoing spending money and won’t ever push the pram....

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 14/08/2019 09:39

We spent that on a different system Stokke and bloody loved it. It lasted both my DCs and has now been passed on to a family member.
Don't regret the cost at all. I was out virtually every day with it.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 14/08/2019 09:39

Just googled the fox. Doesn't look very all terrain to me. Unless they mean "grass at the park" rather than "muddy dog walk in the woods" or more.

amibeingacunexttuesday · 14/08/2019 09:39

Or you could get a second hand bugaboo buffalo, they are pretty similar. People on the bugaboo pages actually rate the buffalo better.

notso · 14/08/2019 09:39

I didn't regret shelling out for an expensive pram. It was great for my needs and we sold it for half it's original cost so it only really cost us as much as the cheaper versions we'd looked at in the first place.

I regretted not getting the double pram I wanted originally.
The one I got was heavy and horrible to use, I stopped going out as much because it was so cumbersome. I sold it and bought a second hand one which was not as described, then another second hand one which turned out to be broken. So I had to sell those and buy another one, then had to buy a single once the toddler grew out of it.
With the money we wasted on buying and selling on we should have just bought the original pram which would've converted to a single.

I know lots of people have second hand bargains but I've had really bad luck with pre-loved or in my case pre-trashed prams.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 14/08/2019 09:39

Almost everyone I knew who bought a big expensive travel system had switched to a Maclaren buggy at around 1 year old, so I agree with a PP that 3 years may be optimistic.

LauraPalmersBodybag · 14/08/2019 09:40

How many children are you planning to have op? If it’s two or three and you commit to buying just the one buggy, then it may very well be cost efficient (at a stretch). I’d imagine though that you’ll only use it for a year or so as 1 year olds get really heavy, and a 10kg buggy + toddler is tough to push.

It also doesn’t have an option to convert to a double - you might want to think about that.

FWIW, I think Bugaboos are great - what’s the difference between a Fox and Cam? I just bought a second hand Cam 3 for a third of the cost of one new. You can buy all terrain front tires and still come in at under £400.

Babyjoggers are great buggy’s. I was very bothered about the whole forward facing thing when I was pregnant with my dd, but in retrospect, it’s no biggie.

user1472709746 · 14/08/2019 09:40

I got a bugaboo buffalo second hand from a family member and it's great. Still in brilliant condition on its 4th child. It's great for rural terrain. My friend who has a mountain buggy always comments on how easy mine is to push in comparison.

IVEgottheDECAF · 14/08/2019 09:41

I would compromise on a second hand one OP
