... to think 2GB a month is enough?

MT2017 · 13/08/2019 17:49

DC's and I are all on Sky plan, 2GB and unlimited calls / texts per month for £6 each. The benefit is that unused data can be dished out and as DD and I hardly use ours, this means DS1 and DS2 get between 3-4GB monthly each.

However, they are saying this isn't enough. AIBU to think that as they all use WiFi at home, this should be enough?

or am I woefully out of touch

My teens use 5gb each and moan it doesn't last them the whole month.

MT2017 · 14/08/2019 18:45

17 and 15.

How much are you now paying for this 5GB?

I'm on voxi so £10 a month for 8GB with unlimited social media, think its gone down to 6GB now though. Rarely use more than 2-3GB of my data as Facebook, WhatsApp,Twitter don't count and that's what I use most internet for.

browzingss · 14/08/2019 18:53

You’re ridiculous! 2GB is nothing.

I have 50GB a month and use the majority of it - and I have WiFi at work (I work full time) and at home. Younger generations just use mobile devices differently than older generations.

I use my phone for messaging (inc sending photos/videos/voice notes) emails (inc uploading attachments), social media (inc browsing photos/videos and uploading them), web browsing, buying train tickets, booking taxis, using Apple Pay etc. The more you use your phone, the more pockets of data you use. Especially if you steam music/videos.

MT2017 · 14/08/2019 18:54

@makemeaname 5GB is £10 p/m, includes unlimited calls and texts.

Both teens are on that one (each), DD and I on 2GB for £6 p/m each.

I burn through up to 8GB per month. DS1 is on an unlimited data plan. Both on 3 so fairly cheap.

browzingss · 14/08/2019 18:56

If they have iPhone, check if ‘WiFi assist’ is on in mobile data settings as this will use mobile data in the background whilst on WiFi

heidbuttsupper · 14/08/2019 19:06

I have 20GB on EE for £20 a month

DemelzaandRoss · 14/08/2019 19:32

Definitely not enough!!

user1471590586 · 19/08/2019 10:31

Hello OP. I'm on Sky. I get 12gb for 9 pounds (discounted from 12 quid). Have you been with Sky a long time? We were given a 25 percent discount, might be worth asking. Also keep looking at the plans they are offering in the app as they sometimes have offers and you can easily swap it.

CarolDanvers · 19/08/2019 10:40

I have unlimited, my kids have 20 GB each though don't always use it but 2 GB is not nearly enough and very unrealistic tbh.

MonstranceClock · 19/08/2019 10:41

Some people must be exaggerating surely. I have 15gb but have never gone over 5gb. And I use google maps daily, social media, youtube, google chrome, snapchat etc a LOT outside of the house.

NurseButtercup · 19/08/2019 10:43

Kids use Snapchat, WhatsApp, YouTube, Instagram all data intensive apps.

Unlimited calls & texts are no good to them they don't talk to each other (I think it's strange).

Look for sim only unlimited data plan from : Three, GiffGaff, lycamobile or Virgin mobile. You won't have to worry about monitoring their use or reminding them to switch to the wi-fi. The fair usage policy kicks in after a certain amount of usage and tethers the data, this will encourage your kids to switch to WiFi or use less data when they are out and about.

I pay £24 on virgin mobile.

CacenCrunch · 19/08/2019 10:49

2gb is nothing. I have Wifi at home and in work but would still need more than that. I have 10gb

My son (13) and I get through 30gb a month each 😬😳

browzingss · 19/08/2019 11:06

I’m not exaggerating at all. I have 50GB and have 1-3GB left at the end of the month through standard phone usage. IE I’m not going out of my way to use data.

My network provider once gave me 100GB of free data, trying to use up 150GB was challenging. Think I managed to use nearly 100GB by downloading/streaming Netflix and using mobile data full time.

Proseccoinamug · 19/08/2019 11:37

DS would use that in two days. It would last me until the end of all time.

LochJessMonster · 19/08/2019 11:41

5 should be fine. I have 8 and never go over, and I'm on social media/whatsapp a lot.

LochJessMonster · 19/08/2019 11:42

There isn't really any need for them to be watching lots of YouTube videos on data. That's what will be eating it up. They can wait until they have wifi access.

MonstranceClock · 19/08/2019 14:55

Thats absolutely ridiculous

kiki22 · 19/08/2019 14:56

5gb minimum for us.

PlatoAteMySnozcumber · 19/08/2019 18:15

The amount of data some of you are getting through is insane. I use my phone constantly but use wi fi at home and work. I only use anything near the 6mb if I am out of the office a lot.

I don’t stream music or videos out of the house though. My DC are still small but I can’t say I would be that enthusiastic about giving them unlimited data just so they can watch YouTube and Netflix out and about. I would actively discourage it in fact.

PlatoAteMySnozcumber · 19/08/2019 18:17

Gb not mb...

Witchend · 19/08/2019 18:53
Shock We have pay as you go on all our phones. Data is only on if it's a genuine need (ie need to google someone's address in the middle of nowhere).

The dc get through about £20-£40 a year on their phones. They know to use WiFi when they have it.
