... to think 2GB a month is enough?

MT2017 · 13/08/2019 17:49

DC's and I are all on Sky plan, 2GB and unlimited calls / texts per month for £6 each. The benefit is that unused data can be dished out and as DD and I hardly use ours, this means DS1 and DS2 get between 3-4GB monthly each.

However, they are saying this isn't enough. AIBU to think that as they all use WiFi at home, this should be enough?

or am I woefully out of touch

Lots of our family aren't in the UK callme so texting them wouldn't be included in free allowance. Similarly sending pictures via text would cost money and having a group chat is far easier on WhatsApp if you have a mix of Android and iPhone users.

To go back to person who relies on the free WiFi, it's great if you can but I think it really depends where you are. I travel quite a bit for work and some places have great accessible free WiFi, in other places it's so slow/patchy you can barely load the login page. Similarly in hotels, sometimes it's great but surprisingly often it's awful.

FuzzyPuffling · 13/08/2019 18:40

I'm on 1GB and use about half of it a month, hence get lots of rollover.
The internet is overrated! (Actually I use unlimited wifi at home)

WonderTweek · 13/08/2019 18:42

I'm just pleased to hear there are still others playing Pokemon Go. Grin I used to have 1G and thought that was loads, now I've been on 2G for a year and it still feels like loads. I've started playing Pokemon Go again a couple of months ago and have only once received the dreaded "you have used up 80% of your data" message, and I have been on PoGo constantly. So I think 2G is quite a lot.

missbattenburg · 13/08/2019 18:44

I only have 1GB a month and hardly ever run out and I'm basically glued to my phone!

Me too. I upgraded to 2Gb because it was cheap and thought I might use it. I never go over 1Gb and I think I use my phone a lot. Forever downloading books, articles, pictures while out and about. Also use it as a personal hotspot when travelling for work but do mostly work from home and offices so have wifi.

I guess mn doesn't use much data...

Unihorn · 13/08/2019 18:44

I've had 1Gb for about 5 years (I'm in my late 20s). I use WhatsApp for about an hour a day and browse the internet for about 2 hours but I use WiFi most of the time as it's available pretty much everywhere these days! I'm just careful not to stream videos and music unless I'm on WiFi. My husband probably uses about 20gb a month because he plays stupid online game things.

GrandTheftWalrus · 13/08/2019 18:47

Me and DP both have 5gb on sky and we use phones for everything and have 90gb saved in our piggybank. We arent careful with it either

GrandTheftWalrus · 13/08/2019 19:00

Also if you take from the piggybank and dont use it, it goes back in.

I'm away from home and no free wifi so I took 3gb from the piggybank and not touched it so itll go back in. And it resets tomorrow.

allthegins · 13/08/2019 19:14

Nowhere near enough. I have 100gb a month. Before that, it was 15gb a month and felt that wasn’t enough

Boom25 · 13/08/2019 19:22

Definitely not enough if they are teenagers. Mine started on 1GB in y1, then 2GB in y2, 4GB in y3 and I've just put him up to 8Gb as im sick if him never having data to respond to my whatsapps. Im not going any higher though, that's enough. TBH costs have come down so much that Indont see why nit. The 1GB was £14 pcm, the 2GB was £13 pcm, the 4GB was £11pcm and the new deal is now £10 pcm for 8GB.

MT2017 · 13/08/2019 19:28

DH and I just asked them what they used it on. They said that when they are out, they don't text but will use Snapchat / Instagram to message each other instead.

If I did that I would turn data on then switch it off once I had finished...

This post makes me realise my usage is a lot.......70gb a month never close apps so could be part of it and I run out two days ago, only got until tomorrow to go until it's refreshed! Blush

AguerosAngel · 13/08/2019 19:35

Nowhere near enough in our house!

Combined between DH, DS & I we have 160GB a month.

DH & I can gift extra GB to DS at anytime.

callmeadoctor · 13/08/2019 19:41

Wow!!!!! I imagine that your apps are using data as you go all the time? Updating, sharing with iCloud etc as you re out and about? I have my settings to do all that stuff when I am connected to wi fi only, that probably helps a lot (when I found out that my amazon photos were using up all my free data!)

ZazieTheCat · 13/08/2019 19:48

Depends how much you are out and about. I have 16GB, some months nowhere near, months with a lot of travel/whole days out Ineed it all.

QueenOfPain · 13/08/2019 19:51

Not enough, unless your kids are under about the age of 12.

Mesmermancer · 13/08/2019 19:53

I pay for 6GB a month and I tend not to use all of it so it rolls over, but I do sometimes leave it on when there's WiFi available by accident and use it all that way :(

That said, I don't watch films etc or download stuff when I'm using my data, I think if I did then I'd use it but I generally just browse internet instead of streaming anything etc unless on wifi

Mesmermancer · 13/08/2019 19:55

if I did that I would turn data on then switch it off once I had finished...

But then you don't get the reply/comment notifications so you have to keep turning it on and off, I guess they just want it on

Hiphopopotamous · 13/08/2019 20:05

I use wifi at home AND at work and still manage to get through 4gb at least - imagine they need plenty more since I don't have snapchat/insta

CodenameVillanelle · 13/08/2019 20:12

Bloody hell. You can get a decent amount of data with Giffgaff for £15 a month why would you be so stingy?
My DS has 2gb a month and he only uses his phone a few times a week and he still gets through most of that.
Just get a Giffgaff sim and enough data for goodness sake.

WhoKnewBeefStew · 13/08/2019 20:13

My dd can get through 5gig easily during the school holidays

CodenameVillanelle · 13/08/2019 20:13

If I did that I would turn data on then switch it off once I had finished...

What an absolute pointless faff. And what if they want to actually, you know, be notified when they get a reply? They would be turning it off and on every ten minutes.

BlueSkiesLies · 13/08/2019 20:17

I use 4gb a month and am on WiFi at home

RottnestFerry · 13/08/2019 20:22

I use around 1Gb a decade on my PAYG phone.

Ipad also PAYG and use around 2Gb a month.

QuckTheDuck · 13/08/2019 20:27

My teens have 500mb and dont use all of it?

BarbedBloom · 13/08/2019 20:33

Not nearly enough for me and I have wi fi at home
