... to think 2GB a month is enough?

MT2017 · 13/08/2019 17:49

DC's and I are all on Sky plan, 2GB and unlimited calls / texts per month for £6 each. The benefit is that unused data can be dished out and as DD and I hardly use ours, this means DS1 and DS2 get between 3-4GB monthly each.

However, they are saying this isn't enough. AIBU to think that as they all use WiFi at home, this should be enough?

or am I woefully out of touch

My DSS has 30gb I have 20gb we can swap data between us if we need too.

He uses his quite quickly, snapchat - videos on stories uses it quite quickly. Same with instagram or watching stuff on YouTube etc.

I’d agree it’s not a huge amount of data for them!

Nat6999 · 13/08/2019 18:16

I have unlimited on Three, it was cheaper than a 30GB plan.

Dragonglass · 13/08/2019 18:16

My teenage boys have 2gb with their giffgaff plan and they never use it all. They use wifi at home, in other people's houses and if it is available when we go out. They don't use their phones a lot when we are out though.

Dragonglass · 13/08/2019 18:17

How is everyone using so much? Do you not use wifi at all?

onceandneveragain · 13/08/2019 18:18

I'm young(ish) and I have a PAYG exactly because I wasn't using all the data (and definitely not the texts and calls). I have access to wifi at home, work, my parents/friends homes, and the gym, which cumulatively is where 95% of my time is spent.

The rest of the time I can almost always find a free public network.
I am honestly confused how people ever need to often use personal data in this day and age, with the exceptions being if you live outside of a major town/city (can see there would be fewer free networks here, although most restaurants, pubs, and so on still have them, plus BT are covering even bus stops etc.) or if you drove a lot and needed traffic updates (I just download google map routes if I'm going on long journeys), or need secure data transfer for whatever reason.

I think most people tend to automatically use their personal data rather than searching for free wifi, which is fine if you have it anyway. But I've found not having it saves me a few hundred quid a year so I personally don't see the need!

motherheroic · 13/08/2019 18:20

No, that's nothing really. I only have a 5gb plan, but the network gives me unlimited social media. So I hardly eat into my allowance.

ThatCurlyGirl · 13/08/2019 18:21

Yep I'd use much more than that - I think it's a case of accepting that things I used to do when I was younger have changed now.

I used to spend £xx on magazines and now I spend it on data instead - I sometimes feel like the generation above me demonise me for this but I'm expected to use data constantly for work / emails / research etc as well as leisure.

If you're paying £6 pp per month now I'd call supplier and say you'll pay £10-12 a month and what can they offer for that? Say you'll shop around and follow through on it.

callmeadoctor · 13/08/2019 18:25

Wow, why not use your free texts (if you have them) rather that use data for whatsapp (for those who do?)

MrsMonkeyBear · 13/08/2019 18:25

I have 10Gb on my plan with O2 and depending on what I'm doing each month I use between 6-8.

I play a lot of Pokemon Go and often have a spare phone tethered to mine so that the kids can play too.

timeforawine · 13/08/2019 18:27

I have 8gb a month and get close to it, on wifi at home.
With Plusnet and they have some good plans, but I don't think any where you can share data

callmeadoctor · 13/08/2019 18:27

I have PAYG by the way with a limit of 500mb, don't usually use it all as I don't have it on automatically. It just goes on when I put it on. I also have everything set to only back up etc when on wifi. (Plus no automatic updates for apps.)

verystressedmum · 13/08/2019 18:27

Me and dcs have 12gb and we don't go over it. I'm home all day dcs use it for whatever they do on their phones.
We were on 6gb which was ok but I would wonder if was going to run out so I'd have to check.
Dh has 30gb but he needs it for work.

SoyDora · 13/08/2019 18:28

I’m surprised... I get 4gb and never go over it, and I’m on my phone a lot! I always try and get on free WiFi wherever I am though.

MT2017 · 13/08/2019 18:31

@thatcurlygirl £10 would give 5GB of data which I could give to both boys (each).

@timeforawine you can share data through Sky. It's really good.

We all have. 15 gb each per month.
It's usually enough.

My dc are 16 and 20.

Hotterthanahotthing · 13/08/2019 18:32

I have just moved my daughter to ID. Mobile 4gb as she will be going to college. She has it rolled over if not used.
I have smile 2gb and get a reduced bill if I use less than 1gb,I'm way under.I mainly use mine when not at home or work just for emails and messages.
My DD is a great youtube watcher but only on WiFi.She mostly plays music when out and a lot is downloaded as rural signals are unreliable.

Geekmama · 13/08/2019 18:33

really not enough OP sorry.

Hotterthanahotthing · 13/08/2019 18:34

How old are your children,DD is 16,knew it was down to cost and found ID herself.

AnastasiaVonBeaverhausen · 13/08/2019 18:35

40gb a month here too, on top of home WiFi.

user1471590586 · 13/08/2019 18:35

We are also on Sky. I have 12gb for 9 quid. My daughter and husband have 2gb for 4.50 each. The data rollover is good I agree, we have accumulated 40 GB in the pot we share. I gave my daughter an extra 2 gb today. She uses facetime and looks at you Tube when down the park with her friends. She has already burnt through 5gb so far and we still have 2 weeks to go.

Isithometimeyet0987 · 13/08/2019 18:36

I have 20gb and sometimes go over although I’m out and about a lot and use some for work aswell.

stucknoue · 13/08/2019 18:36

Its plenty if you have internet at home. We all are on giffgaff 3gb a month plan.

MT2017 · 13/08/2019 18:36

DS1 is 17, DS2 is 15.

DragonMamma · 13/08/2019 18:37

I had 8gb of data and I use most of it each month. I’m always on WiFi at home too.

I’m also on Sky and like that I roll over any unused data - it’s come in handy when away with patchy WiFi

Waxonwaxoff0 · 13/08/2019 18:38

I have 20GB and usually use it all! I connect to the wifi at home but I walk to and from work (45 mins each way) and listen to Spotify en route which uses a lot.
