THINK, lilaura, THINK! why was it put in place by the EU?

TheQueenOfQuotes · 05/08/2007 00:10

so am I correct in thinking that you oppose ANY form of striking????

themoon66 · 05/08/2007 00:11

My 15 year old DS has more understanding than you Laura... sorry, but I've tried.

Perhaps you should do some research into the history of trade unions?

expatinscotland · 05/08/2007 00:11

No, laura, because he wouldn't be allowed to be 'sensible'. EVERY boss would demand that he drive the full whack every day. He wouldn't be able to find a job where that wasn't a requirement. So then, like you said, there are hungry children to feed, so he'd go and do it.

The rules are there because industrial action including strikes forced them to be in order to protect your husband from having to drive when he was tired or be out of a job, unable to find another - because they're ALL expect the same thing, and then starve.

lillaura123 · 05/08/2007 00:12

aitch i agree but thats nothing to do with striking thats to do with the goverment allowing as many as immagrants into the country as they do ...

on that topic would we all stand in alliance?

OP posts:
themoon66 · 05/08/2007 00:12

Oh.. and you have still not replied to UCM.

expatinscotland · 05/08/2007 00:12

Yes, QoQ, you are correct.

UCM · 05/08/2007 00:13

Actually Laura, I am pretty sure that the Taco which governs your Dh was bought in years ago and has nothing to do with Europe. I could be wrong and I would like anyone to correct me if I am.

Again, I am sure that the unions argued this.

expatinscotland · 05/08/2007 00:13

That's everything to do with striking, Laura.

THINK ABOUT IT!

Most of the immigrants coming into this country are legal, they are nationals of other EU countries.

TheQueenOfQuotes · 05/08/2007 00:14

no laura - we wouldn't stand in alliance - have you looked at my links - or do you "know it all" and think no-one should strike even though it's hard earned right in this country???

lillaura123 · 05/08/2007 00:14

if it was dangerous to deliver 20 parcels in your postbag they would make a LAW against it not strike , as with the driving thing its LAW not chosen

OP posts:
TheQueenOfQuotes · 05/08/2007 00:16

so the fact that (for example) Nepal is on the verge of becoming a proper democratic country (with many already having called 18th May "Democracy Day") after 10yrs of Civil War........isn't relevant........a STRIKE caused that to happen - or because it's some far flung country in the world doesn't it matter.

expatinscotland · 05/08/2007 00:16

It's only a LAW because collective industrial actions, like strikes, put pressure on the government to make it a law!

Don't you get that?

Do you think a capitalist government sets and obeys rules like that out of the goodness of its heart?

Do you think big business complies with legislation and rules like this because they're looking after their workers?

Do you realise the amount of money they spend on lawyers, lobbyists, campaign contributions to politicians, gifts, wining and dining and 'research' into how best to screw you, me and everyone in between so as to raise their profits?

UCM · 05/08/2007 00:17

Well what it all comes down to is that your DH does a fab job, he drives produce or whatever all over the country. Because he works for a decent employer, he is under certain rules and you don't have to worry about him killing both himself and anyone else due to these rules.

He delivers stuff like the postman does. But he is obviously paid well because you don't need benefits, right.

Well, if your DH was a postman, he would be entitled to the same rights surely.

They both deliver stuff.

lillaura123 · 05/08/2007 00:19

Taco have been being used for years but long before the new 48 hour rule - it used to be 90hours over a fortnight

if it were not im place and dh was made to work long hours he wouldnt strike he would re-train

and btw yes im against striking thats efects others , other than just workers and bosses - where did it get rover? they relocated to japan and rover ceses to exist

OP posts:
themoon66 · 05/08/2007 00:19

Jeez laura... is it ok to send kids up chimneys in your world too?

themoon66 · 05/08/2007 00:21

Rover went down the pan coz it was a crap product.

TheQueenOfQuotes · 05/08/2007 00:21

"and btw yes im against striking thats efects others"

so you're against striking full stop then???

I think you'll find there's a lot more involved in the Rover issue than just strikes.....or are you that ignorant??

themoon66 · 05/08/2007 00:22

And how would your DH retrain to stay awake and drive for longer hours? Is he superhuman?

TheQueenOfQuotes · 05/08/2007 00:22

and where would his money come from while retraining????

UCM · 05/08/2007 00:23

So Laura, if the royal mail were to cease and you only got one delivery, once a fortnight, would you be happy with that.

That is what privatisation does.

How often is your rubbish collection? Is it one week.

Lucky you. To save money the big bosses up in heaven or wherever it is have decided that in some places the bins should be collected fortnightly. Do you agree with this.

If you don't and you write alongside your neighbours, you would be acting exactly as a union acts. Collectively.

themoon66 · 05/08/2007 00:24

Laura... am worried about you. Have you really read all the posts on this thread? How can you have done so and still not understood? Am mystfied by you.

UCM · 05/08/2007 00:24

sorry, once weekly

Aitch · 05/08/2007 00:24

but that's the world that you support, lil, by disallowing strike action. you make everything up for grabs for the cheapest price.

and no, fgs, we don't have any sort of 'alliance' over immigration. i want people who come to this country to have the same protection as we do, to withdraw labour in the face of inequity. your average polish builder knows only too well the benefit of solidarity.

lillaura123 · 05/08/2007 00:24

u are all making valid points but - it still doesnt sway my decision or opinion sorry if it bothers u that its different to your own...

thank you all for trying to explain things but the more i read the more i think how will the strike help any of this? so they get a few more pennys and better working conditions but for how long? surely that means another strike is on the cards in the future - what part of knowing it will occur again makes you want to stand by it all?
