Following on from a (very late-to-the-party) discussion about this year's Glasto with some friends over dinner tonight, where we all decided Lauryn Hill was an absolute let down, who is the worst performer or group you've ever seen live? Especially thinking of people you really liked who let you down here, not just "was dragged to see Take That with DSis and they were shite" Grin

If you're not much of a music fan I suppose this stretches to comedians, actors, poets...anyone who gets up on stage and does a turn.

Ocean colour scene were great!
Luckily I don’t think I have any really bad ones.
As for comedians, paddy mcguinness was dire - never again!
Love Jason Manford.
Really wanted to see Sarah millican but she’s not getting good reviews on here

LightWithoutHeat · 13/08/2019 22:49

Too complicated for you, I fear!
Best stick to simple pop music then.

Itswinternow · 13/08/2019 22:51

Katy Perry was a bit of let down. Not horrendous, but the worst I've seen.

Joh66 · 13/08/2019 22:52

Bryan Ferry, 1 hour performance in Oxford, dreadful and I felt ripped off. Never bought anything of his again.

Roussette · 13/08/2019 22:56

Leo Sayer. Saw him 3 times Blush
He was great, put on a great show!

Razorlight before they got really famous back in the day. Small venue. Jonny Borrell was an arse but fame hadn't got to him at that point. Great gig.

Roussette · 13/08/2019 22:57

Ditto Joh66
Total let down with Bryan Ferry. I was so disappointed.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 13/08/2019 23:00

Garbage were rubbish at Rockavaria a couple of years back - Shirley was clearly in a shit mood and kept ranting at the crowd how there weren’t enough women on the bill. She had a point, but it’s hardly something the audience had a choice about. Iggy Pop played later and he was fab. Never seen Iggy do a bad show.

Placebo in Munich Olympiahalle - they were sadly rather boring. I was gutted. Suede were playing elsewhere in the city that night and apparently they were fabulous.

ilovepixie · 13/08/2019 23:06

I loved Shakin Stevens as a teenager, but never saw him live. A few years back he came to my town to do a concert in a local hotel. My mum And I went I was so excited. But he was totally crap he didn't sing any of his old hits. People in the crowd shouted out sing Green door and he replied I'm not singing that shite! Then a photographer from the local paper took his photo and shaky shoved the camera in the mans face. It ended up in court!

HedgehogsRock · 13/08/2019 23:29

Definitely the Happy Mondays at Carfest a couple of years ago and then we were given a double dose with Black Pearl. Somewhere beyond dire so we went back to the tent. There seemed to be a rush on to get away and we had to join the crowds leaving to go to the camping fields.

19lottie82 · 13/08/2019 23:33

I saw James Brown in 2004 and he was AMAZING then saw him the next year at a festival........ it was mainly just his band and he shuffled on for a few minutes every so often. Still he dies shortly afterwards I think, so so don’t want to be too harsh!

PinkPanther27 · 13/08/2019 23:36

Not had any really bad gigs but one of the best performers I've ever seen is Muse. Seen them several times and their shows are amazing.

AiryFlyingFairy · 13/08/2019 23:41

Heard Tori Amos mentioned couple of times. I'm a EWF/Fan. Enjoyed all her gigs I've been too. Also have met her & she's so pleasant and gracious.
Worst - 'Tears For Fears' many years ago. Just didn't gel on stage together or with the audience. Short set too just about 1 hour.

Comedy gigs - Really disappointed with 'Mrs Brown's Boys' about 3 years ago. Bought tickets as pressie to go with Hubby. Not cheap either. They literally did an episode off the tv so of course had already seen. Might as well just watch on dvd. Ok they ad libbed & it was live but felt like little effort. Expected to see something fresh. To be fair seem they seem to do a good job with their meet & greets afterwards. But It was a freezing cold afternoon and after the disappointment of the same old show we couldn't be bothered wasting any more time.
By the way a good mate has been literally all over the world seeing Rush and loves their shows everytime!

ladymariner · 13/08/2019 23:50

Peter Kaye was such a massive let down! We'd heard from other people who'd seen shows on the same tour how good it was, how we would love it....no, we were massively shortchanged. He did an hour at most, no support, nothing. What he did was funny, yes, but there wasn't enough of it.
I've seen Meatloaf 4 times, 3 of those were fantastic, the first being 1982, but the 4th at Chatsworth absolutely was not!

HoppyHop · 14/08/2019 00:02

Steve Cougan at The Victoria Hall in Hanley about 10yrs ago. I've loved all his TV stuff but he was terrible, most of his script was written on his hand. Cringed all the way through.

KnitFastDieWarm · 14/08/2019 00:04

Terrible:
Micah P Hinson (aggressive, nasty arsehole)
Rich hall at the fringe in the 2000s (tedious and clearly couldn’t be arsed)

Amazing:
Ian mckellen and Patrick Stewart in waiting for godot (Mind blowingly brilliant, funny and poignant)
The national at ally pally in 2013 (A truly amazing atmosphere despite the huge venue)
Patti Smith (fucking awesome)
David o’doherty atthe fringe this year and back in 2015 (fab both times, good natured and hilarious)

augustusglupe · 14/08/2019 00:12

Thompson Twins about 1983 were absolutely crap!! Just a load of noise, spent all night in the ladies.

Guns and Roses, Milton Keynes, 92ish, the end of their hey day. Them and us lost the will to live, just dire!!

augustusglupe · 14/08/2019 00:22

Forgot to mention good ones... Saw Bauhaus 3 times in the 80s, brilliant, totally mesmerising!!

Depeche Mode, never seen a bad show and they just get better!!

Prince, could do no wrong in my eyes, he was sensational live.

Metallica 🤘🏻 Brill, seen them 5 times, but prefer when they do indoor venues.

PrincessPeach08 · 14/08/2019 00:51

Destiny's child were horrific. Completely out of tune, trying to out sing eachother. Michelle was the worst but Beyonce and Kelly really weren't much better!

Jessie J, absolutely outstanding voice but couldn't have looked any less thrilled to be there and barely spoke two words to the audience.

On the other hand, best ever concert hands down James Blunt! He was phenomenal singing live and playing different instruments, he was absolutely hilarious and took the piss out of himself, and actually came across as a genuinely lovely guy, made for a real lovely atmosphere

quizqueen · 14/08/2019 01:44

This thread is great to tell me who I shouldn't go and see. I always fancied going to see R D Hunter but won't waste my money now.

Luckily every band /act /show I've seen has been great except a medium at my local community centre- I walked out in the interval. He couldn't get the audience to own up to knowing anyone he 'contacted', so embarrassing.

Also, I thought I should go and see an opera before I died so went to Verona to see Aida. God, that was dire. It didn't start till about 10pm and we were in the cheap seats, sitting high on the stone steps of the coliseum. It started to rain and the musicians just up and walked off and we were stranded for about two hours in the downpour, all squashed together, before they returned. It didn't finish till about 3am and I kept falling asleep leaning on some random Italian and snoring!!!

Best acts- Billy Joel, Moody Blues, TT ( several times), Chris De Burgh, Elton in his platform days in the 70s and Rhydian.

CoolCarrie · 14/08/2019 02:17

Two crap ones Bob Dylan and Van Morrison
Two brilliant ones Del Amitri and Kate Bush 5 years ago now, she was fabulous

CoolCarrie · 14/08/2019 03:05

How could I forget Springsteen in 1988; we were right at the front and he was magic. I notice that Reg D Hunter is on at the moment at the Edinburgh fringe and has opted out of published reviews on their website which is interesting considering the comments on here..! He sounds shit!

Nat6999 · 14/08/2019 03:30

Michael Jackson, I went to a lot of big stadium gigs in the 80's, I saw David Bowie, Madonna, Wham, Live Aid, Bruce Springsteen amongst others & the experience was amazing, but Michael Jackson was one of the worst gigs I have ever been to, it was dubbed, there were so many flashing lights & dancers, half the time you couldnt see him properly & the sound was appalling & considering the tickets were £35 which in 1988 was nearly half a week's wages, it wasnt worth the money.

TorchesTorches · 14/08/2019 04:08

Worst was Lee Hurst, who is to be on tv sports quiz 'they think it's all over '. I saw him about 20 years ago and he had no prepared material, so kept on trying to get the audience to say stuff so he could react to it. It was dire, cringe worthy improv. I just looked him up to s what he is doing now and it seems he is a far right supporter....

Also had a Reg D Hunter bad experience. He hunted out a woman in the audience to take the piss out of. She handled it pretty well but it felt quite bullying and inappropriate (and not funny).

MITCHELL33 · 14/08/2019 05:58

Marti Pellow in Evita so crap fell asleep whereas Marc Almond at the Apollo last month brilliant.

MsMarvellous · 14/08/2019 06:32

Graham Coxon from Blur in a solo gig. The most self indulgent boring claptrap. The only gig I have ever left early. Couldn't understand anything he was saying. Ugh.
