Following on from a (very late-to-the-party) discussion about this year's Glasto with some friends over dinner tonight, where we all decided Lauryn Hill was an absolute let down, who is the worst performer or group you've ever seen live? Especially thinking of people you really liked who let you down here, not just "was dragged to see Take That with DSis and they were shite" Grin

If you're not much of a music fan I suppose this stretches to comedians, actors, poets...anyone who gets up on stage and does a turn.

Ralph McTell (but to be fair it was the last performance of a very long tour but he was knackered and it showed).

ThighThighOfthigh · 18/08/2019 22:24

I saw Danny La Rue in the 70s! Andy Stewart, The Alexander Brothers and Jimmy Shand. All excellent.

I've seen David Soul in a lot of theatre, he's always terrific.

Headinthedrawer · 18/08/2019 22:57

Another one for the chilli peppers at Reading many years ago.A good few years later I read Scar Tissue and realised AK had a massive drug addiction at the time ,was totally fucked up and the band were falling apart.Made sense...they barely moved round the stage and made no effort.I'd like to see them live clean

TemporaryPermanent · 18/08/2019 23:15

Blur were utterly fantastic in Hyde Park in - was it 2009? but like MorrisZapp said, the audience were awful. i got a flying beer tray to the temple and i shouted 'you're all in your fucking forties'. Lots of smug men there in t shirts intimating that atheists had better sex than anyone else. No doubt i fitted right in. The band played their hearts out.

I was taken to Bruce Springsteen at the Milton Keynes bowl in maybe 1992 and it was a completely magical evening, like nothing before or since.

Oasis at Knebworth

Tom Jones a couple of years back, he’d decided to ‘re-mix’ his hits (into jazz-style shite). Bob Dylan - expected it to be fairly tuneless but not anywhere near as bad as it was - people laughing everywhere. Alanis morissette also a big disappointment. And Ruby Wax. Any Marillion fans tempted to see Fish on tour this year might also want to reconsider...
Unexpectedly good - Gary numan totally agree is so much better live than you’d expect. Fat boy slim the same, walk off the earth blew my kids’ minds; waterboys & Lloyd Cole both still rocking it. On the acting side I’ll walk over hot coals to see judi dench or Juliet Stevenson in anything; and phoebe Waller-bridge had grown men in tears when I saw her.

As we can also mention great performances... doubt anyone will remember this lot, but I saw them 3 times, and oh my, they were fantastic. I was a bit obsessed with them.
Dr. Hook. (Sylvia's mother, when you're in love with a beautiful woman etc.) Ray Sawyer died last December but think what's left of them are still touring.

WildRosie · 19/08/2019 08:18

Dennis Locorriere, who essentially WAS Dr Hook, lives in England and still tours. He performed a Hits and History tour about ten years ago and some of it is on YouTube. His guitar solos on Hearts Like Yours And Mine are terrific.

Roussette · 19/08/2019 08:41

Thanks for that WildRosie, I will look all this up. Dennis was wonderful Grin
I know he has the rights to the Dr.Hook name but has had recent health problems an has had to cancel a tour.

ThighThighOfthigh · 19/08/2019 10:06

I remember my sister crying over some boy to Dr Hook.

0pheIiaBaIIs · 19/08/2019 10:25

Morrissey has cancelled four of his six shows that I've bought tickets for. Does that count? Also the last time I saw him when he actually bothered to turn up he acted like he couldn't be arsed and was doing us all a favour. He was my hero through my teens and twenties but the way he treats his fans and his racist gobshitery have put me right off. I won't ever buy tickets (or waste money on non refundable travel and hotels) for one of his shows again.

StormTreader · 19/08/2019 10:27

"Ed Byrne was really disappointing live - no stage presence and just plain blah really."

Really surprised to see someone say this, saw him in Wolverhampton about 10 years ago and it was my all-time top comedy gig, I literally couldnt breathe and had tears running down my face.

CheckingOutTheQuantocks · 19/08/2019 10:36

Reading through the thread, I'm really glad I decided not to see the RHCP at Leeds when they were headlining. I went to see We Are Scientists instead and they were terrific. At one point they thanked us for choosing them over the main stage headliners, and did a good-natured pisstake of a typical RHCP riff so that we wouldn't feel like we'd missed out. Sounds like I certainly didn't, as this would have been in 2005/2006 when they were apparently not worth seeing.

notacooldad · 19/08/2019 10:45

Fish hasn't been with Marillion for over 30 years and has toured extensively all over Europe ever since. He usually puts on a good show. I gave the last tour a miss but will probably go to this winter's one.

Mmmmdanone · 19/08/2019 12:05

Pearl Jam..was so excited for it but there was no energy- EV mumbling you into his mic. Boring.

SJane48S · 19/08/2019 12:16

Also seen Ed Byrne live (about 20 years ago mind) and he was great

RingtheBells · 19/08/2019 12:23

Bob Dylan hasn’t acknowledged his audience for years, I still keep going though. He seemed quite smiley at Hyde park recently.

OTOH best ever and of the same generation Leonard Cohen was brilliant and properly engaged with the audience and played for over 3 hours. A very sad loss

thesockgap · 19/08/2019 13:17

My DH and his brother went to see Paul McCartney just before Christmas. He was so excited when the gig was announced, I was waiting in the queue to buy tickets as soon as they went on sale. I'd said to him I would only buy the cheapest ones as they started at £56, but they had already sold out on presale. So I said OK I'll only get the £80-odd ones then. They sold out while I had them in my basket. He was so desperate to go, I ended up paying £272 for two tickets once they'd added on all the booking fee palaver etc. Still it was a "once in a lifetime" experience for him.
Well.
He got home utterly dejected, and said it had been the worst concert he'd ever been to! No atmosphere, really poor sound, the vocals were very weak, and it was just not enjoyable at all. What a waste of money!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 19/08/2019 13:52

And I wouldn't be able to see Sarah Millican, as her voice/accent GRATES.

We don't really talk like that in the NORTH EAST, I promise!

It's just her.

She's RUBBISH!

absopugginglutely · 19/08/2019 14:24

@RingtheBells I wish I'd made it to Leonard Cohen when he played nearby five or so years ago. I saw some clips from the concert and friends who went said that he was so beautifully engaged with the audience and each person in the audience felt special.
Three hours as well is incredible!

QuiteChic · 19/08/2019 17:15

Worst was Toyah Wilcox (it’s a mystery) - certainly that - a mystery as to why we paid for a ticket. Police - I couldn’t believe that they thought they could sing.

But the best was Queen at Knebworth, (1989?) Kylie in Toulouse (2010?)and Genesis in Paris (2008?) sorry useless with dates.
I do remember going to see the Osmonds in the 70’s with a friend because she had a spare ticket. That was a pretty good show from recollection.

RingtheBells · 19/08/2019 17:38

absopugginglutely, yes it was the 2012/2013 concerts, he was excellent and he also seemed to have great respect for his band and even though it was a big arena he made it seem very special.

Okurrrrrrrr · 19/08/2019 19:06

I feel I need to put in some Britney support. Grin I've seen her 3 times, twice in the UK (O2/big arena) and the last time was on her Vegas residency two years ago.
I totally agree about the UK ones and her touring concerts. It's quite sad and agree her management are obviously just wheeling her out. There's a video of her at Brighton Pride having to ask her dancer where she is so she can shout out to the audience, even then she shouts it wrong Sad I'll try and find the video.

BUT

Her Vegas residency was AMAZING. She seemed so genuinely happy, engaged with the audience loads and was a completely different person to what I'd seen in the UK. She's never going to be back to how she was at the start of her career. She was a powerhouse back then, now it's like she thinks she doesn't have to try anymore.

She's obviously been so messed up being so famous so young. But Vegas was awesome.

Okurrrrrrrr · 19/08/2019 19:13

'Whatsup Brighton Pie' 😆😆😆😆
