Milka ad casting call - awful

Dippypippy1980 · 11/08/2019 10:50

I have just red the really creepy casting call for a little girl to advertise milka chocolate.

While there is lots and lots wrong with the call, I am outraged by the no red hair. I have red hair, so does my daughter. We will now be boycotting* this product.

But it has got me wondering, why are unkind comments about red heads still a thing? I endured nasty comments through my childhood, and within the last decade distance myself from a friend who was making nasty comments about a friends baby with red hair. What the hell is wrong with people.

Why do people who would be (quite rightly) outraged by comments about skin colour think it’s okay to target people because of hair colour?

I really struggle with the concept of child modelling, casting calls etc. That advert is disgusting. The industry is disgusting.

happycamper11 · 12/08/2019 18:20

I suspect this advert is written in another language and is a poor translation. I don’t suppose the original comes across as creepy.

OpheliaTodd · 12/08/2019 18:23

It was written by a woman. She was named on Twitter.

busymomtoone · 12/08/2019 18:24

Mitebiteatnite and others: I would not want my child within a mile of the ( definitely) guy who wrote this spec. Translation complications or what, just freaky.

Superleo837 · 12/08/2019 18:25

I’d also like to know the answer to your question. I’ve always struggled to understand the hypocrisy. I now have a son with strawberry blonde hair and have had people say “ at least it’s not proper red”??!! I love his hair colour and I will be very vocal about any derogatory comments even from family. My other son is half Indian but no one has ever said anything racist. 🤷🏼‍♀️

ReanimatedSGB · 12/08/2019 18:31

That doesn't look like a professional casting call to me.

angelfacecuti75 · 12/08/2019 18:31

The ad is very weird. I mean is the ad to give you a clue about the character the child is portraying or does the child actually have to belike that ? I've got red hair. I never understood the bullying or hatred. I know it's a bright colour and attracts attention but it is just hair. Keep your child away from child modelling . It doesn't sound like English is the first language here (maybe Milka isn't an English brand though I'm guessing ?) because of the errors and the fact that 'Red Hair' has a capital in front of it or maybe that is to highlight it but that is anyone's guess?

mimosaadorna · 12/08/2019 18:45

I’m with you on this one OP. I have red hair, was bullied stupid at school BUT ...the “RED PREJUDICE “ thing gets me even now. Would they have put NO BLACK OR ASIAN CHILDREN” ?. No, I don’t think so.....red/ginger people are still bullied, still get the p*ss taken....if Milka had a specific “type” in mind, why not specify ?....but would that not be prejudiced too ?......😡

Therarestone · 12/08/2019 19:07

I'm there with you with the red hair comment OP, I have a gorgeous red haired little lady. She is so proud of her hair and it really worries me that one day she may not feel this way because of comments.

Saying that so far we have had nothing but positive reactions to her hair, I think times have changed since we were younger so hopefully it won't be too much of a thing for her growing up.

PeachyPeachTrees · 12/08/2019 19:18

They should have just specified, blonde or brown hair. It would have sounded better than no red heads. I don't think they are anti red heads but it wasn't the look they were choosing for this advert.

2018SoFarSoGreat · 12/08/2019 19:23

that is just shameful. I'm a red head (okay, was - am not bottle assisted) and was bullied mercilessly as a child. FFS, how is this okay? It is just discrimination, plain and simple.

Whoever wrote that should be publicly shamed. And fired.

I wish parents would boycott the product and the stinking ad call.

icedgem85 · 12/08/2019 19:57

YABU to be outraged about the red hair part. That's just to do with branding and colouring. The bit I find vile is 'she must be innocent' as if to suggest some 11 year olds are anything but innocent. Gross. My kids have done modelling - this is not the norm - or at least if it is, it's heavily edited by the agency before it gets to me!

Nettie1964 · 12/08/2019 20:28

Just yuck

NotBeforeCoffee · 12/08/2019 20:33

Awful that people put their children through this.

But the red hair thing is not an issue, I’m sure there’s plenty of casting calls that stipulate red hair.

Tartsamazeballs · 12/08/2019 20:37

Manic pixie dream girl: child edition Envy

WonderTweek · 12/08/2019 20:44

Yuck. That ad was disgusting to read.

Stick to Cadbury’s chocolate

Milka ad casting call - awful
Harls1969 · 12/08/2019 21:09

Not just red hair. If you're over/underweight people think it's ok to pass comment on that too. I say stuff them. I think people who make these comments are secretly jealous 😉

pollymere · 12/08/2019 21:13

They may have already cast a red haired child so don't want two. It's a weird casting call though.

HaveIGoneMad · 12/08/2019 21:30

The red hair thing in this instance isn't such a big deal because it's a casting thing, the overall tone of that add has made me feel physically sick however. There is something very off about the way that is written I feel and makes me very uncomfortable. :/ on another note though comments about redheads is definatley still a thing and I do agree it is ridiculous.

CantGetDecentNickname · 12/08/2019 21:35

It is an industry where people are judged on their skin/hair/eye colour, height, weight, age, sex, good looks etc. Everything most of us try to avoid in the workplace, yet in that industry, somehow it is acceptable. The ad was truly creepy as well.

TatianaLarina · 12/08/2019 22:12

It’s not acceptable to use discriminatory language though.

Devora13 · 12/08/2019 22:19

I get the thing about maybe a translation, but I wouldn't want any child of mine within a 100 miles of whoever wrote (or maybe translated!) this.

patq1967 · 12/08/2019 22:48

casting director has sort of child in mind and is not looking for a red head child in mind, so if your child has red hair you are wasting yours and there time , from what i have seen it is harder for girls than boys to make it this game
