Milka ad casting call - awful

Dippypippy1980 · 11/08/2019 10:50

I have just red the really creepy casting call for a little girl to advertise milka chocolate.

While there is lots and lots wrong with the call, I am outraged by the no red hair. I have red hair, so does my daughter. We will now be boycotting* this product.

But it has got me wondering, why are unkind comments about red heads still a thing? I endured nasty comments through my childhood, and within the last decade distance myself from a friend who was making nasty comments about a friends baby with red hair. What the hell is wrong with people.

Why do people who would be (quite rightly) outraged by comments about skin colour think it’s okay to target people because of hair colour?

Okay - just wanted a whinge about re ahead s being singled out. Just wanted a chat. Not going to have a row with you sash. Sorry to disappoint.

Ewww, that’s so very creepy. And odd.

I don’t think the redhead thing is a big deal though. And I say that as the mother of a redhead; given how cringey the rest of the ad was I’m glad they are exempt from the ickiness.

I’m a bit Confused at people claiming that red haired is an exclusively British / Irish trait though. Didn’t the vikings bring it over?

HellonHeels · 11/08/2019 13:21

Creepy as fuck. Casting call written by Humbert Humbert.

SarfE4sticated · 11/08/2019 13:31

I've been bullied about my hair colour too Dippypippy1980 so really get your sensitivity to it.

Having "ginger minge" chanted at me on the bus when I was a kid was a real highpoint Hmm. That was in the 70s though, i hope things are better now.

growlingbear · 11/08/2019 13:38

I used to do occasional work for a children's casting director and we'd get the most repulsive casting calls. I remember one: Toddler twins needed. Can be mixed race at a push but only if they are exceptionally pretty and fair-skinned. And another where a young woman had come up from Manchester to London fro a casting call only to be told that she was too fat. She quite rightly said: You called me. I bought an expensive train ticket to get here last minute. You should at least screen test me. But they actually laughed in her face and refused. Monstrous business.

doadeer · 11/08/2019 13:53

Ewwww what a creepy ad!!

JemimaPuddlePeacock · 11/08/2019 13:54

It sounds more like the person writing the casting advert doesn’t have a clue what they’re on about/zero attention to detail. Hair colour irrelevant but mustn’t be red, the blurb about the character references her brown hair, mustn’t be over eleven but if she’s twelve must look younger, etc.

They clearly don’t really know what they’re doing.

Jurassicmuma · 11/08/2019 13:57

I've got red hair, I love it and without too much bias I think it's the prettiest however, I'd never be offended, different people like different things and want to have an image of different things. I saw an argument about VS Models on this morning or Lorraine or something and a woman was saying there should be plus sized models there, I disagreed, for their branding the beautiful thin angels work, I guess for this red hair doesn't. It's just the industry

diddl · 11/08/2019 13:58

" And then looks like they have copied and pasted it literally, fucking up spectacularly in the process"

Yup-it's just like a spewing forth of (awful) thoughts & ideas, isn't it?

amy85 · 11/08/2019 14:02

Surely this is just how modelling/acting works....no point getting your knickers in a twist it's an industry based on looks....for this one ad that says no red heads there will be loads more asking just for red heads

cdtaylornats · 11/08/2019 14:12

Mia in the ad is described to look like every young girl in Milka ads ever.

Usually the have a cow painted purple.

ShatnersWig · 11/08/2019 14:20

They clearly don’t really know what they’re doing

Incorrect. They are an experienced casting director.

JemimaPuddlePeacock · 11/08/2019 14:22

How do you explain the glaring inconsistencies in their advert?

crosstalk · 11/08/2019 14:31

OP another one saying it's not the red hair. It's the mustn't have reached puberty, the height regulation, the language, the whiteness.

And at posters talking about where red hair is found .. there's a deep brown red in northern France which is called chataigne but isn't the English chestnut.

The problem is red hair tends to be recessive. Like green eyes.

CorBlimeyGovenor · 11/08/2019 14:34

My god. Just read the add. What a load of tosh! Eye colour not important... Mia has dark brown eyes. It's just the most muddled and weird advert. It sounds like it's written by a teenager (with a hobby of writing pretend film scripts in their bedroom).

Bwekfusth · 11/08/2019 14:35

What a nice paedophilic advert. Good job Milka 👌

MissPollyHadADolly19 · 11/08/2019 14:39

Fuck the no red hair part, that's a teardrop in the ocean compared to the rest of the ad! Shock
The wording and emphasis on her looking young, sweet and innocent is awful.

Teddybear45 · 11/08/2019 14:40

This is just how the advertising industry works and to be honest this is probably one of the more open casting calls I’ve seen. Often you get ones that are even more specific that exclude kids of certain races or hair types or even eye colours.

zzzzzzzz12345 · 11/08/2019 14:46

I can’t believe you read this ad and worry about the red hair bit. The whole advert demonstrates horrific objectification of a child, I would use this as a lesson and steer your poor daughter away from such a ruthless, shallow industry.

LittleBird74 · 11/08/2019 14:49

It is an awful advert, worded very creepily.

However, specifying certain looks isn’t unusual at all. If they don’t want red heads, fine. Some briefs don’t want blonde kids, brunette kids and so on.

Also, Milka aren’t against red heads! For last years Christmas campaign the casting directors saw, and shortlisted many red headed children whilst casting.

zackly · 11/08/2019 14:55

But it has got me wondering, why are unkind comments about red heads still a thing?

To answer the actual question (which I saw a PP also addressed), I think it comes down to mistrust of the Celts. They've generally been conquered, mistrusted, belittled by the English (I'm not meaning this in an anti-English way I hasten to add, I'm talking in general historical terms).

I think we're seeing echoes of this in the Brexit vs backstop debate but that's a discussion for another time.

Dippypippy1980 · 11/08/2019 15:09

For the final final time. I said the whole ad was creepy, I said there was lots and lots wrong with it. I then opened a discussion about one specific aspect of it. I simply wanted to have a chat. I am sorry that this appears to have angered some posters.

There has been a huge amount of coverage on this , and the creepy creepy vibes have been covered elsewhere.

ShatnersWig · 11/08/2019 15:50

How do you explain the glaring inconsistencies in their advert?

I don't need to. I know it's genuine. It's not the first time this particular casting director has pulled shit like this, which is why some in our business have named and shamed her. Spotlight removed the advert (eventually). It's authenticity and authorship are not in doubt

KettlePolly · 11/08/2019 16:26

I'm definitely surprised this was written by a woman. It reeks of lolita fetishism.

iMatter · 11/08/2019 16:34

That whole advert is fucking creepy
