Milka ad casting call - awful

Dippypippy1980 · 11/08/2019 10:50

I have just red the really creepy casting call for a little girl to advertise milka chocolate.

While there is lots and lots wrong with the call, I am outraged by the no red hair. I have red hair, so does my daughter. We will now be boycotting* this product.

But it has got me wondering, why are unkind comments about red heads still a thing? I endured nasty comments through my childhood, and within the last decade distance myself from a friend who was making nasty comments about a friends baby with red hair. What the hell is wrong with people.

Why do people who would be (quite rightly) outraged by comments about skin colour think it’s okay to target people because of hair colour?

I saw this on twitter. If that is the norm for children's casting calls. I don't understand why any parent would want their children in the business. & also how child stars can become so messed up.
You anbu at all. It was horrid

IVEgottheDECAF · 11/08/2019 10:54

Shock How horrible

QuimReaper · 11/08/2019 10:55

There could be any number of reasons for that. My first assumption is that it might clash with Milka's lilac colour branding. It's how the industry is, though, I'd keep your daughter away from it if you find it offensive - she (and you) will need a very thick skin if you want to pursue that path.

QuimReaper · 11/08/2019 10:56

Oh sorry I misread your OP, didn't realise it's a thing doing the rounds. Got a link?

Nanny0gg · 11/08/2019 10:57

If it's 'creepy', isn't that more concerning than red hair prejudice?

Aside from the red hair thing, it’s very creepy but unfortunately I think that child modelling can be like that

PaperFlowers4 · 11/08/2019 11:03

I have worked in this industry and have seen many casting calls asking for kids with red hair. It’s a definite advantage overall.

But you are being unreasonable for taking umbrage - this is just what commercial modelling is like - people are chosen for the way they look, or don’t look.

corlan · 11/08/2019 11:05

I have red hair, my daughter has red hair but I don't find it offensive. They don't want someone with red hair. I've noticed over the past few years that children with red hair are massively overrepresented in ads in the UK, probably because they tend to be very cute.

The ad is creepy as fuck though.

KettlePolly · 11/08/2019 11:06

I'd be astonished if it was written by a woman. It had a strange creepy fetishistic feel.

A stark reminder that what we see in adverts is tightly curated.

It's also a reminder that this tight curation about what's acceptable or praiseworthy extends further than just looks.

If you're a little girl, you're attractive if you love animals and sunflowers. The extent of your permissable eccentricity is to choose an unusual animal.

When I was 11, I liked nothing better than buying matches from the post office and flicking them off the box in the park. I was still able to be largely charming regardless, at least I think I was! Grin

myself2020 · 11/08/2019 11:07

Its modelling. your child is exclusively selected based on his/her appearance. you’ve agreed to that when getting involved in child modelling.
i assume red hair and lilac doesn’t look great together. same as a 5ft tall child would be excluded.

Branleuse · 11/08/2019 11:08

Its creepy, but i think most child modelling is

maddiemookins16mum · 11/08/2019 11:11

If that’s a professional ad then it’s weird anyway.

Dippypippy1980 · 11/08/2019 11:11

To clarify, I would never subject my daughter to this industry. I just read about it on Twitter and became cross with the red hair comment.

I am clearly being unreasonable, and over sensitive.

Still not buying their chocolate though!!!!

I don’t get why anyone would want their child to be a model anyway.

But putting that to one side I think red hair looks amazing. Makes someone really stand out from the crowd (in a good way).

INeedAFlerken · 11/08/2019 11:14

I think you're being over-sensitive.

ArthursSlave · 11/08/2019 11:16

They way I have read it, is that perhaps it was written in another language (German?) and has been translated badly. Milka is a brand very much rooted in Swiss culture, so the child they envisage is a bit whimsical?? But, generally, yes creepy, and terribly overstated, this child doesn't exist IRL.

Silvercatowner · 11/08/2019 11:16

Their chocolate is grim anyway. It won't be improved by a few red hairs.

myself2020 · 11/08/2019 11:17

@Dippypippy1980 every product advertised is advertised according to tight casting standards. you better go off grid completely.
the ad might be for europe in general (red hair is not that common outside the uk - i think i was at least 20 before i saw a red haired person in real life), and you would want a child that looks vaguely familiar for all countries.

wheelywheelynice · 11/08/2019 11:17

Very creepy.
What's with the random capitalisation of Red Hair,
I've noticed Americans and Canadians use capital letters where there is no need and as a grammar nazi I find it extremely irritating!

BananasAreEvil · 11/08/2019 11:17

There's so much wrong with this advert, but the no red hair thing isn't one of them. That's just part and parcel of this industry. Quite frequently child actors with red hair are very much sought after.

Mitebiteatnite · 11/08/2019 11:18

The ad is creepy AF. It genuinely sounds like it's been written by a man who probably needs his hard drive confiscating Hmm

With regards to the 'no red hair' it's totally normal in modelling. My auntie was most pleased when she saw a casting call specifying 'blonde hair and blue eyes only' some 30 years ago. It was for milkybar.
My cousin was vetoed within seconds of walking in the door as he was 'a little on the podgy side' Presumably they thought he looked like he'd eaten all the milkybars, rather than dished them out Grin

It was grim. Some of my kids have done some modelling nonsense for savings money, and I’ve not come across a casting call like that.

Desmondo2016 · 11/08/2019 11:18

Cadburys is much nicer anyway !
