Biggest Shithole in the UK

Am retiring soon so want to relocate away from the rat race but everywhere I consider away from the Home Counties seems to be regarded as a dump. Money goes further away from the SE, I thought about Norfolk which is within reasonable distance of civilisation but my friends think that it is backwards/racist. Is it true that Lincs/Cambs/Norfolk is best avoided. AIBU to move?

I think you can buy gooseberry 'n' cinnamon yoghurts pretty much everywhere now OP, you'll be grand wherever.

BoneyBackJefferson · 10/08/2019 22:06

DickieDonkey

If you are planning to move anywhere you need to drop the stereotypical southerner is best attitude.

However if you move to a place and act normally and try to integrate most places will be fine.

Walnutwhipster · 10/08/2019 22:07

Please don't come to North Yorkshire. We're clearly backward racist bigots with no idea of beauty or culture. You'd hate it.

Singleandproud · 10/08/2019 22:08

I live in Norfolk, I don’t think it is particularly racist, however the population isn’t very diverse so comments may come from ignorance more than maliciousness. Norfolk has some really beautiful villages and some amazing beaches and 90mins from London by train..

Mitzimaybe · 10/08/2019 22:10

Love this thread, seriously laughing out loud at some of these.

@jsmith99 has some excellent suggestions. From my own neck of the woods might I venture to suggest the often overlooked town of Dewsbury? Good train connections to civilisation in the form of Leeds and Manchester.

If it’s value for money that you want then the Hale, Prestbury and Knutsford areas of Cheshire may be what you’re after.

AnxiousMcAnxiousFace · 10/08/2019 22:10

Do you live in Slough? One of the best of the Home Counties to be sure.

StoneofDestiny · 10/08/2019 22:11

According to the ilivehere survey the top 10 worst places to live in England (you seem to be looking in England OP, are

Peterborough
Huddersfield
Rochdale
Doncaster
Hull
Rotherham
Blackpool
Castleford
Oldham
Blackburn

Every area in the UK will have its good and bad areas within. Some areas will be more or less to your own particular taste. Property websites tend to have practical information with regards to the standard of living in each area. I also always check the local parish websites of anywhere I think of moving to and the local police crime maps, which tell you in detail about crimes reported by street and month and by categories.

TheRLodger · 10/08/2019 22:12

Surely if Norfolk is good enough for the Duke & Duchess of Cambridge it’s good enough for you

Lincs is like any county including the Home Counties in that there’s good parts and slightly worse towns. But please don’t rule off a whole county just because of a few pockets

TheFatberg · 10/08/2019 22:12

@hamnpeasepud I love where you live, especially the bargain fish at the Sunday market.

Rachelover40 · 10/08/2019 22:12

I agree with singleandproud, Norfolk has beautiful market towns and villages and lovely beaches. Of course there are grotty areas as with anywhere, you just don't go to them!

In Norfolk I could recommend many places.

However, somewhere that you might find interesting, op, and will certainly get value for money with housing, is Jaywick-on-Sea, near Clacton, in Essex. Lovely beach. Have look on rightmove, you'll be surprised.

Zoflorabore · 10/08/2019 22:17

I live in Knowsley just outside Liverpool and it could be classed as a shithole by someone, as could anywhere.

We can get so much house for our money, are on the doorstep of one of the best cities in the world and have a safari park at the Ed of the road. What's not to love?

Seriously though, it makes me angry when certain types dismiss where I live, it's amazing. I've lived in a few places before having my dc and I wanted to bring them up where I grew up. Community is everything here. I'm proud of where I'm from :)

SimonBridges · 10/08/2019 22:18

I live in a town that is frequently listed on here as an utter shithole and any comment that it is actually nice is scoffed at.
I grew up in a town that is frequently listed on here as a lovely place to live.

I was visiting my parents last week in the ‘lovely town’. I couldn’t get a decent coffee and a request for vegetarian food received a funny look. I didn’t see a single non white face.

Where I live now, ‘shit town’ has two vegan cafes, everyone of our independent cafes has a vegan and a vegetarian option there is every kind of food you can think of. Every year we celebrate Diwali in the town hall.

@hamnpeasepud I love where you live, especially the bargain fish at the Sunday market.

It's a great market but I don't get down there nearly enough! We've had hundreds of thousands ploughed into our little town over the last few years and it really is a fantastic place to live Smile

Sexnotgender · 10/08/2019 22:24

I like how some posters just say Scotland, like it’s some little village. There are some beautiful bits of Scotland and some truly shite bits!

Vinorosso74 · 10/08/2019 22:29

I grew up in NE England but have now lived more of my life in London than my home town. The narrow minded attitudes I have encountered have been from ex colleagues who lived in Essex and Kent or those from my home town or neighbouring areas who have never been to London or a city beyond Newcastle (aside from trips to York or Edinburgh).
Everyone has a different take on what makes somewhere a shithole. It's what you make of a place

ethelfleda · 10/08/2019 22:37

North Warwickshire is gorgeous. All countryside and farms.

whataboutbob · 10/08/2019 22:38

Never mind the move to the country guys, PigletJohn has outed herself Shock.

BobbyBrewstersMagicTorch · 10/08/2019 22:39

Parts of Norfolk are a bit racist, particularly the seaside towns where unemployment is very high.

Norwich, however is a lovely city with a great vibe. It's a UNESCO city of literature, has fantastic shopping (chains plus loads of independents), history, excellent restaurants and pubs.

It's no more backward than anywhere else, although maybe not as cutting edge as London, obviously.

Definitely worth your consideration.

LatteLove · 10/08/2019 22:41

Having just come back from Scotland I have no idea why people are recommending it. It's three hours in every direction to get to it from wherever you started

Confused nonsense

diddlesticks · 10/08/2019 22:42

Is this a wind up? It's insulting to us in East Anglia with both Norfolk and Cambridge mentioned - presumably you think there's no civilisation here and it's all a dump? Hmm

ginghamstarfish · 10/08/2019 22:42

Stay in the Home Counties please, there's nowhere else that would be good enough for you Hmm

PurpleFlower1983 · 10/08/2019 22:43

Please stay where you are!

inbetweenforever · 10/08/2019 22:43

Bradford 😳

whyayepetal · 10/08/2019 22:46

Grin@ Chopin and Rachel

I'm sure Royston Vasey is a lovely place too ..... has a very "local" feel, really protective of its residents.
