Biggest Shithole in the UK

DickieDonkey · 10/08/2019 20:23

Am retiring soon so want to relocate away from the rat race but everywhere I consider away from the Home Counties seems to be regarded as a dump. Money goes further away from the SE, I thought about Norfolk which is within reasonable distance of civilisation but my friends think that it is backwards/racist. Is it true that Lincs/Cambs/Norfolk is best avoided. AIBU to move?

Norwich had just been voted one of the five best places in the world by the head of a major airline...

Gbtch · 12/08/2019 19:51

Yes I am inclined to agree with the general response here. Please stay where you are.

icedgem85 · 12/08/2019 19:51

YABU to think everywhere is a dump but you do have a point. People aren't the same wherever you are. There are huge areas of the country I would never consider moving my black family due to backwards attitudes and racism.

Toomuchtrouble4me · 12/08/2019 19:54

Friends left London for Edinburgh, Dorset and Australia - all happier there.

RebeccaWrongDaily · 12/08/2019 19:54

Just avoid the north please. Thanks OP.

HMArsey · 12/08/2019 19:55

Are you compiling a spreadsheet, OP? Grin I’m nominating Wakefield and Stoke on Trent to go on the shithole list.

FattyPeddledFuriously999 · 12/08/2019 19:57

Shere near Guildford is gorgeous and close enough to Guildford and London so you aren't cut off. Or how about Brighton, again close enough to London but you get to be by the sea. Dorset appeals a lot to me as well. My ideal place if/when i move from London would be somewhere idyllic/senic, close to the sea and within distance of a day trip to a city (maybe Brighton, London, Bristol or Bath to name but a few). Lots of lovely villages in Surrey.

FattyPeddledFuriously999 · 12/08/2019 19:58

Windsor is nice as well.

HeronLanyon · 12/08/2019 19:58

Please avoid shere op. Thank you.

Stay in the south. You are not welcome in The North!

ReuT3 · 12/08/2019 20:34

It might not be best to base it on other peoples opinions. Every city has its good side and bad side. The same is true of counties. If you thought of Norfolk, go and visit it. Pick area's in the county and city you might like to visit and go and have a look. It is better first hand research then secondhand research because it will be someone where you want to retire not your friends who you might not see after you've moved.

I live in Suffolk, about 20mins outside of Bury St Edmund's. It's lovely

Fowles94 · 12/08/2019 20:39

Just don't inflict yourself on North Wales, our society is probably to backwards anyway.

I work as an estate agent in Norfolk and as the saying goes you ‘get more brick for the buck’ here. Is also a very beautiful county with lots of amazing coastal areas, Norwich which is a lovely city and also you are never too far from a direct rail link to London. I must say that there are some Norfolk jokes about people being a little backwards, jokes such as ‘they don’t high 5 in Norfolk we high 6’ etc but I’ve always considered it to be very tongue and cheek and just ‘banter’ I suppose. Both my brothers live in London and I can see the attraction there is also a massive attraction to this area, particularly the greater bank balance via cheaper property!

Cambridge it self is incredibly popular and very expensive. Lincolnshire and fenland areas of Cambridgeshire can be cheaper (and in my opinion) not quite as pretty as the majority of Norfolk. Within Norfolk the North Norfolk coast, west Norfolk and mid Norfolk are the best areas.

SundayGirlB · 12/08/2019 21:21

What?! That's mad...and a bit offensive
I live in SE and get out as much as I can. Places I've been to and loved:

Dorset - Purbeck coast
Cornwall - Falmouth
Bristol
Norwich
York
Devon - Salcombe, Brixham
Wales - Pembrokeshire coast
Harrogate
Scotland

And so, so many more.

AnotherAdultHumanFemale · 12/08/2019 21:30

I'm glad people down south think everywhere else in the UK is a dump, it keeps it nicer, less crowded and cheaper for the rest of us!

NameChangerOfTheNorth · 12/08/2019 21:33

Norfolk is beautiful, I grew up close to the Suffolk/Norfolk border and didn't find it backward. People were very friendly and kind. I suppose it depends where you are.
Have also lived in South Essex, definitely avoid.

NameChangerOfTheNorth · 12/08/2019 21:34

Oh and I live in the Midlands now and it's lovely! There are decent people everywhere, no one place is full of twats only.

LoveBeingAMum555 · 12/08/2019 21:35

Surely everywhere has pros and cons? I live in rural North Yorkshire, great sense of community, low crime rate and beautiful countryside, but 25 miles to nearest Tesco or similar shops. No public transport at all, and high property prices. It's not everyones ideal.

derxa · 12/08/2019 21:36

.

Onesmallstepforaman · 12/08/2019 21:47

Could you all please stop bugging up the northern half of England? Or we'll have every bugger up here! From a southerner who wouldn't go back for a kings ransom. Thanks

Nothingcomesforfree · 12/08/2019 21:48

For those that were saying you have proper roads up North can I just remind you that that the M6 ( midland lands and further north ) has had roadworks on forever not due to finish for years .
And that the A75 the principle road between Irish ferries for goods and Scotland /England isn’t even dual carriageway. Brilliant. Nothing like getting stuck behind a 40 mph lorry for 100 miles until Carlisle.
