To think some of the celebrities WANT the weird look they have

It seems like in the last year or two there's been an explosion in women getting plastic surgery that makes them look strange. Examples include Lauren Goodger and the Geordie Shore ones Charlotte and Marnie. Possibly there are loads more. The "look" has odd large lips, puffy cheeks, straining skin by the eyes and maybe some chin scraping. These once pretty women have effectively had their faces ruined.

DH insists the plastic surgeons have screwed up while exploiting some emotionally vulnerable women; he's convinced that the "look" is a mistake because nobody could want to look like that, so the surgeon(s) have overdone it and the women are just brazening it out. I agree the women clearly have body dysmorphia issues and a professional should have discussed get counselling instead, but I think they must also actively WANT to look like that or they'd be suing the plastic surgeons. So, AIBU to think this is the look they actually want even though it's so very strange?

Actually that’s just a snapshot. I think it was called ‘pete burns - my plastic surgery nightmare’. It basically explained his bad mental health led to multiple surgeries that led to his lip implant fucking up and then everything after that was just trying to rectify a terrible situation by making it worse. I think Katie Price now seems to be in this loop plus countless others.

If you read interviews with Lauren Goodger she had a really sad upbringing, given up for adoption at 4. She obviously suffers from low self esteem, she was plunged into the celeb world through TOWIE which became her career and then her businesses went bust. She basically has no one to fall back on but herself, she’s gotten older and there are now a thousand young reality stars who’ve taken her place. So what do you do? You have surgery in the hope that you’ll look younger and stay relevant. Then you’re trapped in a cycle.

JoyceJeffries · 10/08/2019 09:57

Yy they are under a lot of pressure to look a certain way. A bit like Victorian’s and their ridiculous corsets - a madness that is difficult to understand but everyone seemed to just go along with it.

Sparklingbrook · 10/08/2019 09:58

I watched a program once where someone had regretted having their earlobes stretched and were having surgery to put them back to normal. It involved surgical scissors. Bleurgh.

JoyceJeffries · 10/08/2019 10:00

I do think it’s a shame that young men seem to becoming just as vain. I guess they are under a lot of pressure with social media too.

fedup21 · 10/08/2019 10:00

I still wonder what long term effects some of these procedures have and what these people will look like in middle age.

Me too. It makes me think of the weird people living in the Capitol in the Hunger Games.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 10/08/2019 10:02

I think they would've better spent their money on dealing with their mental health issues and massive insecurities rather than surgeries that never solve the underlying problem and a merely a sticking plaster until the next fix.

The damage they have done to their perfectly lovely faces is shocking and the girls on tv now are getting things done at such a young age, all the fillers, botox etc. It's so sad.

Barbarafromblackpool · 10/08/2019 10:03

Just had a look at Lauren and charlotte; it's a dramatic change and not one I prefer tbh. I was watching celebrity goggle box recently and one of little mix looked very 'done'.

I wonder if part of it is showing you have the money to do it?

PorkHollywood · 10/08/2019 10:04

Courtney Cox after having her fillers dissolved. She looked awful with them.

Roussette · 10/08/2019 10:07

But you can take a corset off. Some of these procedures are irreversible.

I understand the pressure if you're a sleb but I don't get the not young normal woman buying into it and having stuff done.

I've got a friend (well... maybe more of an acquaintance..) and she is my age... in her sixties. She's been having botox and stuff for quite a few years now, plus something with her eyebrows. Her face is very lumpy and odd and her eyebrows are weird. I'd rather spend a bucketload of money on regular facials (nothing invasive) and good skincare products. I'll cope with my wrinkles.

OtraCosaMariposa · 10/08/2019 10:09

You mean the "blow up sex doll look".

I can't understand how any woman thinks she looks good with vastly over inflated lips and weird stuff done to her skin.

Thesearmsofmine · 10/08/2019 10:17

I agree, I think they want that exaggerated look and it isn’t just celebrities, a local mum of 3 died last year after going to Turkey for a bum lift.

I am worried about the long term health implications of having all this stuff done to your body.

SandraOhshair · 10/08/2019 10:18

PorkHollywood do you think there was filler too or something in the cheeks? I'm trying to work out which proceedure they have which makes the eyes look smaller? CC eyes look much better in the after shot. I'm thinking cheek fillers must pump up the face and reduce the eye skin. Why would someone choose that!

upple · 10/08/2019 10:36

Part of the problem is that many men like the 'blow up sex doll' look.

ALittleBitAlexis · 10/08/2019 10:37

For some people, I'm sure it is deliberately obvious - I remember an episode of Real Housewives where one of them got their first facelift and the others were all "you can really tell!", and not bitchily!

It's kind of like how way back when, having very pale skin showed that you had the wealth to not need to spend time outside. Then, later, having a tan showed that you had the wealth to go on holiday. Having a puffy face shows that you can afford a puffy face!

Of course, cosmetic surgery is now available in every other hairdressers and is so cheap that it doesn't point to affluence anymore, much like cheap holidays and fake tan made tans less glamorous.

For other people though, it will be either trying to look fashionable or just plain insecurity. I see a lot of very obvious cosmetic work in my area, and the top-lip fillers in particular just look painful.

Work12 · 10/08/2019 10:40

I can't understand why women like Cheryl Cole and Michelle Keegan have gone down that right when they were known as the good looking girls?? What has Cheryl Cole done to her face?!! She didn't need it. I just think surely they don't think they look good. I have a daughter and I hope it's not the norm to have this blown up puffy cheeked, slitty eyes, blown up lips look when she's older.

PorkHollywood · 10/08/2019 10:44

I think I the fillers push it upwards SandraOhshair, like a hamster with its cheek pouches filled.

Sparklingbrook · 10/08/2019 10:45

Don't forget the bum implants. Now that's one I really don't understand.

Writersblock2 · 10/08/2019 10:45

People have been modifying their bodies all over the world since time began. It’s just the trends that change.

Sparklingbrook · 10/08/2019 10:47

I get trends. But they go in and out. Some of these procedures you are pretty much stuck with. Confused

WingBingo · 10/08/2019 10:47

It is definitely one of those things I just can’t relate to.

We are never going to understand everyone’s different tastes, but this look just blows my mind. I find it hard to believe people find it attractive, but they clearly do.

Such a shame people feel the need to do this to their face.

AudacityOfHope · 10/08/2019 10:52

In real life do you think they do @upple?

I don't know any men who aren't married to normal-looking women. Nobody is looking for a rubber doll who is constantly blowjob-ready.

DeadBod · 10/08/2019 10:53

The recent photos from the 90210 reunion show the bad results of surgery. The men have seemed to age really well and the females have that closed eye look.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 10/08/2019 10:54

I see older women on holiday who have had procedures in their youth. You can tell because (a) their upper arms and hands have no elasticity and (b) their boobs don't lie down with the rest of them!

SilverySurfer · 10/08/2019 10:57

It horrifies and puzzles me to see these women turn themselves from naturally attractive to freaks with fish lips.

Have you ever watched a tv show called Botched? There are some completely horrific plastic surgery disasters which two US doctors attempt to rectify. One trans man had undergone a lot of facial plastic surgery and he looked appalling, with big lumps all over his face. When they came to remove whatever the hell had been put in, they said it was effectively cement!

Greyhound22 · 10/08/2019 11:00

We were talking about this at work yesterday because someone who we come into contact with has had her lips blown up to epic proportions and none of use knew where to look.

I hope this trend does die out and sanity prevails. It's a dreadful look. I just think the pressure on women to stay young and have this doll like face isn't going away sadly and whilst surgeons can make their money 🤷‍♀️

I watched an old 90's film with Joely Richardson in the other day. Stunningly beautiful woman. I googled her to see how old she is/what she looks like now as haven't seen her for ages (think she's in something trendy I don't watch) and she's not as extreme as some but has obviously had work done. Doesn't look like she can move her face and her already perfect cheekbones have something stuffed into them. She would have been naturally very beautiful as she aged 😐
