To ask what demographic Ealing is?

Hi,
Dh is being relocated to Ealing this year after years abroad.
We both come from middle class backgrounds and I was born and raised in maidavale.

Many years abroad and now I’m completely out of the loop.

What demographic is Ealing? Whilst visiting whilst looking for houses, I can’t seem to put my finger on it. We are thinking of haymills if anyone knows?

Schools are very important to me as we have 3 children, but there aren’t any grammar schools....

Should I go private?

Sorry I’m completely lost in this situation and it’s been hectic to try and research or buy as I’m oversees.

Any advice is very appreciated.

Notting Hill and Ealing takes children from age 4 (possibly 3?). Girls only of course.

For your budget I believe you will need to look around South Acton/ Chiswick borders if you want a large house.

I think Northfields is your best bet. A few nice parks too.

titnomatani · 06/08/2019 18:39

You can google the “Waitrose effect” for more information. Having a Waitrose local to you can even increase the value of your property.

Actually, Lidl has overtaken Waitrose in increasing property prices in its vicinity:

www.theguardian.com/business/shortcuts/2019/jul/31/does-lidl-bring-down-house-prices-waitrose

Also, I should've added in my first post, although Ealing is known as the 'Queen of Suburbs', it's actually not that nice and highly overrated. I'd advise you to visit the place to get a feel for it yourself.

titnomatani · 06/08/2019 18:42

If you're basing your demographic analysis on Boden there is one in Park Royal. I think that would be the perfect part of Ealing for you! 😂😂😂

Lilimoon · 06/08/2019 18:50

I was born and raised in Ealing and I'm rough as fuck. HTH x

Seven777 · 06/08/2019 18:58

I’m trying to imagine what job your DH could have where they would expect him to be “on site” in a snap at any second? In Ealing?

If it’s that urgent, they should provide you with a house!

familycourtq · 06/08/2019 18:59

Fuck me - do people actually talk like this in an non-ironic manner?

CruCru · 06/08/2019 19:04

I think the OP is getting a hard time here. Having to move back from living abroad is stressful. It’s not outrageous to want to live in a smart neighbourhood and it sounds as though the OP has the money to do that.

Unfortunately I don’t know Ealing at all so can’t help.

Fromage · 06/08/2019 19:06

lol Lilimoon
I was living in Ealing when I was caught dealing drugs. After I got out of prison I thought it had gone downhill, tbh.

Seven777 - that's a good point. Is your dh a Winston Wolfe type of chap, OP?

DareDevil223 · 06/08/2019 19:09

I certainly hope Ealing isn't as rough as 'oversees' (sic) Hmm

Basketofkittens · 06/08/2019 19:23

You will probably need a stab vest and a panic room in your house.

GherkinTherapy · 06/08/2019 19:25

For your budget I believe you will need to look around South Acton/ Chiswick borders if you want a large house.

Yeah, but that's no good for Op, working class people live there, she'll need to live in Chiswick proper if her darling children are to be protected from the riff raff.

Seven777 · 06/08/2019 19:35

To be fair, I think most people would live in a safer, cleaner, greener area if at all possible and this is just a fact. If you’re not local to West London, you might have no idea where to start.

GherkinTherapy · 06/08/2019 19:52

Yeah, but what's that got to do with the op being middle class?

poorchurchmouse · 06/08/2019 19:54

Primaries are excellent- Fielding, Little Ealing and Montpelier all oversubscribed and very good. DD is at Christ the Saviour but that’s no good unless you’re a churchgoer.

Secondary state schools are a bit more problematic: Twyford seems well thought of, but enormous (and again, a church school).

AgnesBadenPowell · 06/08/2019 19:57

I live in Ealing. It's really mixed. Huge detached houses (small plots though) in W5 around the common and further north between the Broadway and Pitshanger (around the cricket club). Pitshanger itself has smaller housing stock but a nice high street. Northfields also has some nice housing, mostly Victorian terraces.

There's lots of green space - Walpole, Pitshanger and Lammas parks, the common.

It's a huge borough with some very affluent areas and some that aren't. There's a university so lots of students around as well as every other age group. I like it here because it's not a sterile, homogenous bubble and isn't pretentious. Ealing isn't really a suburb anymore and is noisy and polluted around the Broadway but there are quieter streets.

If you want exclusively white, upper middle class suburbia then Ealing probably isn't for you. Try Chiswick along the river (your budget wouldn't stretch) or Bedford Park (ditto) but remember that the great unwashed are probably just as keen to avoid you as you are them.

Seven777 · 06/08/2019 20:02

I don’t think there anywhere in London that’s “exclusively white” is there? Even the “white people” probably won’t be British white anyway.

I don’t think the OP has stated this as a condition, in any case?

neverkillamockingbird · 06/08/2019 20:07

Thanks to all the useful comments.

It does seem like a mixed bag like I was expecting. Seems like Northfields may be best.

Though everyone unanimously agrees Chiswick is best.

I was born and bred in Ealing..went to a great state primary school and a rough as fuck secondary, which apparently is now Offsted Outstanding!

My mum nd brother still live there. I'm back over there this week for a visit from my gritty SE London enclave.

I heart Ealing.

neverkillamockingbird · 06/08/2019 20:12

I haven’t stated race once!
People love to ruffle up their own feathers.

“Maida Vale” is hardly “white”.

I just wanted a nice safe area with good schools- hardly a crime!

In any case, I don’t need to prove myself to anyone.

Blindandfrozen · 06/08/2019 20:15

Your budget won’t go far in Chiswick or Kew tbh

AgnesBadenPowell · 06/08/2019 20:17

Northfields and Pitshanger are lovely areas, you could do far, far worse.

Do bear in mind traffic - depending on where you are in Chiswick you will NOT be able to get to Ealing in 15 mins. The traffic is horrendous! I would avoid having to use the North Circular (A406) road to get between home and wherever it is your husband needs to be. It's a nightmare at rush hour and Chiswick is to the south and east of this road compared to Ealing. Northfields or Pitshanger areas wouldn't have this problem.

Public transport between Ealing and Chiswick is also tricky - the bus takes forever and the District line between Chiswick Park / Turnham Green and Ealing Broadway is good (10-12 mins journey time, trains every 5-10) but you may have a decent walk to get to either of the Chiswick stations from some areas in W4.

Pikapikachooo · 06/08/2019 20:17

Can’t believe you are asking this OP
It’s London . So mixed . Like most of this city . And we all mix fairly happily
But rest assured there are middle class
People and private schools !

DocusDiplo · 06/08/2019 20:20

Biscuit OP

JoJoSM2 · 06/08/2019 20:21

a rough as fuck secondary, which apparently is now Offsted Outstanding! wouldn't be the first outstanding rough school in London tbh...

cortex10 · 06/08/2019 20:34

Will your DH be working here by any chance https://www.rbkc.gov.uk/contactsdirectory/az.aspx?searchletter=e&orgid=5332 when I worked in the area it was a standing joke that we'd be right in the firing line if anything kicked off.
