To ask what demographic Ealing is?

Hi,
Dh is being relocated to Ealing this year after years abroad.
We both come from middle class backgrounds and I was born and raised in maidavale.

Many years abroad and now I’m completely out of the loop.

What demographic is Ealing? Whilst visiting whilst looking for houses, I can’t seem to put my finger on it. We are thinking of haymills if anyone knows?

Schools are very important to me as we have 3 children, but there aren’t any grammar schools....

Should I go private?

Sorry I’m completely lost in this situation and it’s been hectic to try and research or buy as I’m oversees.

Any advice is very appreciated.

To be fair, I’ve used “walking distance to Waitrose” as an conscious criterion for a property purchase three times, and it’s never let me down either from a personal or an investment perspective!

Legomadx2 · 06/08/2019 14:19

This thread is a piss-take. No-one living in London, let alone 'born and raised' there would write 'maidavale'.

It's a pisstake! No-one reply!

RosaWaiting · 06/08/2019 14:36

Where I live is rough

I can walk to Waitrose in 5 mins.

HeadintheiClouds · 06/08/2019 14:45

The Waitrose in Ealing is in one of it’s far less salubrious parts. Anyone using proximity to Waitrose as an investment decision would have bought a pig in a poke there...

CendrillonSings · 06/08/2019 14:57

I didn’t say it was the only criterion. But it’s a useful filter in most places.

Over a third of a million people live in the Borough so it's a bit difficult to generalise.

Some parts of Chiswick fall within Ealing (but don't tell them that!)

Lived in the Borough for over 20 years and raised 2 kids without any issues. A lot of the secondary schools are much improved from when we were looking.

The Waitrose is great but I wouldn't want to live anywhere near it.

Ealing Broadway on a Friday and Saturday night is a bit like the Wild West.

Oh, and there is a fairly well-established gang culture too.

Wakemeuuuup · 06/08/2019 16:21

For everyone saying how wonderful St Benedict's is, I'll leave this here. No chance I'd send my child there.

neverkillamockingbird · 06/08/2019 16:58

Thanks so much @jackernanna
Your post is actually really helpful as you seem to know Ealing very well.

What’s your thoughts on Northfields (is this the part that is part of Chiswick?)
And pitshanger
As well as haymills (the residential area just off Park Royal). The houses here are detached and spacious compared to most of the houses in the other areas....but unsure if it’s “rough” or anything.

RiddleMeThis2018 · 06/08/2019 16:59

@Wakemeuuuup I completely agree.

HeadintheiClouds · 06/08/2019 17:10

Why don’t you just say what your budget is, op? And where specifically in Ealing your dh has to be within instant reach of at all times? They seem to be quite pertinent to your question...

Seven777 · 06/08/2019 17:11

Wow - I take it all back about St Benedicts.

HeadintheiClouds · 06/08/2019 17:17

Indeed, there’s a very good reason it’s easy to get into.

HeadintheiClouds · 06/08/2019 17:19

That said; St. Paul’s have had similar and it hasn’t done their reputation any discernible damage...

neverkillamockingbird · 06/08/2019 17:22

@headintheclouds

I’ve already said my budget in one of my replies.
1M to 1.5M

Northfields is quite a nice part of the Borough. I don't really know Haymills, but a lot of Park Royal is pretty grim.
Spent a long time living and working there (living in the East of the Borough and working in the West) My job meant I saw a lot of the "underbelly" of the Borough so I am prepared to admit that I am quite jaded, however, my kids managed to avoid all the gangs/drugs and I also have relatives still living there whose boys did amazingly well.

It is a pretty diverse place - swanky, detached houses cheek by jowl with quite deprived areas. Feel free to send me a pm if I can help, but also be aware that I haven't lived there for 6 years now.

I don't really miss it, but it is jolly handy for Westfield Grin

Seven777 · 06/08/2019 17:32

Do you know where exactly in Ealing he has to be? You might find Chiswick is just as near?

Also, you can probably get more for your money in Acton. There’s some lovely streets there.

HeadintheiClouds · 06/08/2019 17:41

Sorry, I missed that, op. I’m afraid spending £1.5m doesn’t preclude an area from being “rough as fuck”, sadly. This is London.

Neverender · 06/08/2019 18:17

I lived up the road from Ealing Broadway for six years and it was lovely (except for the short London riots).

Lived up the road from the cricket club.

Seven777 · 06/08/2019 18:19

Hi OP. Just also wanted to suggest Kew? It’s no time to get into Ealing (direly they’d allow your DH 15 minutes)? but it’s distinctly less “edgy”. Very family-orientated; sleepy, laid back vibe in the curve if the river. Lovely river walks etc. More Victorian or earlier architecture around. The place has a lot of character. Also great primary schools I hear and its on the District Line. Borders Richmond which I think you would love!

You do get less for your money, but it’s a buyers’ market atm with Brexit. You could probably get this for £1.5. Attractive double fronted Victorian and modernised interior? Ready to move in by the look if it. I think you would like Kew. It has a very villagey feel and fantastic for kids.

To ask what demographic Ealing is?
Seven777 · 06/08/2019 18:20

“Surely” not “direly”

BuildBuildings · 06/08/2019 18:21

This is the most mumsnet post ever Grin

Seven777 · 06/08/2019 18:25

Hers some photos of the interior of that house OP. I bet you’d get it for £1.3 or therabouts, in which case it’s a steal, I reckon.

There you go - Pitshanger is as save as it gets in Greater London.

And honestly, when you see areas with large detached houses that are well maintained, clean leafy roads etc what do you think the odds are of it being crime central Hmm

Seven777 · 06/08/2019 18:27

I’ll try again

I used to work for the borough in Education- the schools are a mixed bag- those in affluent areas get better results but don't they all? Also, God forbid if your child had SEN- then the borough wasn't interested in providing the support these children so desperately (and rightly) needed. If you're looking for an affluent, white dominant area in Ealing (sounds like you do), the W5 postcode is where you want to be. The traffic (and subsequent pollution) is a bloody nightmare though so keep that in mind.
