Is there much coverage in the UK of the US shootings this weekend?

The El Paso attack definitely driven by white supremacy, the second in Ohio is uncertain regarding motivation, as yet. Possibly a lethal family row as the gunman's sister is one of the victims. At the same time some news people are asking if it was partly racially motivated, because the majority of people killed were black (in Ohio).

Not an AIBU as such but didn't see another thread discussing it. White nationalism just seems to keep gathering speed and aggression.

Yes, I have seen it on the Sky News channel. They did not discuss possible motives though.

LadyRannaldini · 04/08/2019 19:11

Lead story on websites and on the TV news but like many people I don't read the articles, it tends to be 'Oh another American shooting'. Until there's the will to tackle it it'll go on happening.

TheFridgeRaider · 04/08/2019 19:17

It's main news. You could literally just check main news outlets.

TheFridgeRaider · 04/08/2019 19:19

It's also main news in news outlets where I am from and Al-Jazeera.

seven201 · 04/08/2019 19:19

It's in the top stories bit

nocoolnamesleft · 04/08/2019 19:20

Yeah, the news channels are playing their "Yet another mass shooting in the country that has lots of mass shootings but doesn't think guns are a problem" tape yet again.

OtraCosaMariposa · 04/08/2019 19:21

Top item on the main evening news. They are reporting that the Texas shooting is possibly a white supremacy crime, the Ohio on e appears to be more personal grudge.

Bugsymalonemumof2 · 04/08/2019 19:21

Yep main news but generally a lot more apathy towards the situation as until someone actually pursues change nothing will change and it's just another shooting :(

PolkaDotted · 04/08/2019 19:21

Yes it's all over the news and I've seen at least two threads on the Walmart shooting on here.

StoneofDestiny · 04/08/2019 19:21

Main news - identified as hate killings, and a direct result of Trumps' racial hatred speeches.

justasking111 · 04/08/2019 19:22

All over the news, the Americans right to bear arms means that I just shrug and give up, their mess and they are not interested in the opinions of non american people.

Compassion fatigue. Frankly there are more deserving countries to feel sorry for.

user764329056 · 04/08/2019 19:24

Tragic and yet feels like this will be the status quo until gun laws are changed which will never happen in cowboy Trump’s administration

meditrina · 04/08/2019 19:24

There was an MN earlier thread, but it was deleted for some reason.

The shootings are top story on main news bulletins today. With a kind weary familiarity, because these atripicitues have been happening all too often in the US for a decade or more

LatteLove · 04/08/2019 19:25

This really. Horrific but America can change things to prevent this happening time and again. They choose not to by valuing gun ownership above human life.

AbsentmindedWoman · 04/08/2019 19:25

Motives are being widely discussed here.

You could literally just check main news outlets.
True, but a thread also gives room to talk about it with a variety of people, though.

It's on the news but will probably be forgotten in a couple of days.

To be honest I roll my eyes and am rarely shocked by this any more. We briefly sigh at America's fucked up relationship with guns and carry on. I'll see some right wingers on FB tell us it's not guns that are the problem.

What's the motivation this time? Another incel? Terrorism? Just another angry white dude with a grudge against society?

TheFridgeRaider · 04/08/2019 19:29

Compassion fatigue.

And quite understandable. It's not about someone else being more deserving of compassion. I think it's just...
Everyone is tired of feeling sad for someone else all the time and we are just more and more numb to it because we are barraged by bad news ALL THE TIME.

There just must logically come a point when people do just "Ah. shame" and move on, because bad news are EVERYWHERE.

PolkaDotted · 04/08/2019 19:29

I think that the children and adults were were murdered, wounded or lost family members in the shootings are as worthy of compassion as anyone.

Ponoka7 · 04/08/2019 19:29

"Compassion fatigue. Frankly there are more deserving countries to feel sorry for."

It doesn't mean that the people killed supported gun laws. The victims in the El Paso murders weren't Americans.

Do we all deserve to be blamed for Brexit and treated badly when in Europe?

Who are these deserving countries?

PolkaDotted · 04/08/2019 19:33

Guns are definitely part of the problem, and they need much, much tighter gun control laws but they are not the only issue. There are a lot of angry young white men out there who are being radicalised online. The incels, white supremacists etc need to be dealt with too, because there are other methods available to them besides guns if they're willing to kill.

Morgan12 · 04/08/2019 19:33

As long as the NRA rule American politics absolutely nothing will change.

AbsentmindedWoman · 04/08/2019 19:36

They choose not to by valuing gun ownership above human life.

I'm not American, just living here, and the majority of Americans I know don't think like this at all though.

I'm aware that people tend to mix a lot with others who share the same values. But Americans are not a homogeneous mass who all think the same - certainly lots of people here are very frustrated by the lack of gun control.

Agree with all this.

How do you know that? I am in the USA watching the news and the nationalities have not been a focus of reporting.

Many Texas citizens have strong S American roots but are US citizens.
