Is there much coverage in the UK of the US shootings this weekend?

The El Paso attack definitely driven by white supremacy, the second in Ohio is uncertain regarding motivation, as yet. Possibly a lethal family row as the gunman's sister is one of the victims. At the same time some news people are asking if it was partly racially motivated, because the majority of people killed were black (in Ohio).

Not an AIBU as such but didn't see another thread discussing it. White nationalism just seems to keep gathering speed and aggression.

Interesting article in GQ mass killers explaining themselves.

Are you saying a person with a house full of guns goes away and leaves his house full of guns with people that didn’t go through the the checks (such as they are)/hold a licence for the guns?

No, of course not - like so many, the guy has a gun safe which I quite rightly don't have access to. Apart from anything else, someone with this many is hardly going to leave them hanging around in case anyone breaks in and uses them against the family

Rosehip10 if it's any consolation, the use of "sport hunter" over here refers to wild hunting of deer and such; it really doesn't mean hanging out of a window taking pot shots at that irritating neighbour Wink

And if anyone's interested in the historical context, "bearing arms" never meant firearms originally. It actually involved bearing heraldic arms, as in a family being granted the right to a coat of arms, but language changes and in the American usage it's come to mean something else

Madison meant carrying and owning firearms.
I believe Switzerland has more households owning guns than USA, is it obligatory there to know how to use one & have one accessible?

LatteLove · 05/08/2019 19:53

Just saw on the news the Ohio killings led to 8 deaths in 30 seconds.

How the hell can it be justified for a private individual to have that level of weaponry to cause that kind of carnage?!

StarbucksSmarterSister · 05/08/2019 19:56

the right to bear arms is not worth the death of hundreds of other ordinary Americans

Any normal person would agree but those who treat guns as a religion don't. They truly believe their "right" is worth more than the life of another person.

If Sandy Hook didn't stop this, nothing will. You only have to look at the reactions of what I call gun fundamentalists to that. They said it was faked, the parents were "crisis actors", one family have had to move house several times and can no longer visit their child's grave due to harassment.

Yes it’s a requirement for all people if military age to have a assault rifle, they are also required to have 30 rounds of ammunition to enable the individual to fight their way to the designated meeting point

I've just started a separate thread as I couldn't find this one (Threads I'm on wasn't working for me).

I think Trump has given the go-ahead for an insanity plea in the case of the El Paso shooter - see thread here, with link to brief interview I'm referring to and transcript of what he said that I feel is relevant.

He unequivocally states 'But this is also a mental illness problem, if you look at both of these cases, this is mental illness. These are really people that are very, very seriously mentally ill'.

It also has compulsory military service for men so there's that as well.

For mass shootings you need access to guns. But as is evidenced by Switzerland and Canada (who both have a lot of guns and not so many shootings) you also need social dysfunction, alienation, a lack of social cohesion and lots of toxic male bullshit. Untreated mental health and addictions help, although I think that's a symptom rather than a cause.

Since The US shows no sign of dealing with it's enormous social problems, gun control is the low-hanging fruit to stop this shit.

Don't worry everyone. This wasn't because of guns, or emntal health, or even computer games. Mike Huckabee has it all figured out. It was becuase there weren't enought thoughts and prayers! So everyone just pray really, really hard and everything will be fine.

Imagine citing the partisan shite that is the hill website to own your enemy, and still pretend you are better informed. If you understand america they are effectively calling for the same thing as what the UK, better investment in youth services even though its more religion focused.

Trying to score party political points from a uk based website shows you have little understanding of the situation

Dontsharefood · 06/08/2019 22:08

I'm sorry, who is my enemy exactly? Would it be acceptable to you if I linked his website?
