Is there much coverage in the UK of the US shootings this weekend?

The El Paso attack definitely driven by white supremacy, the second in Ohio is uncertain regarding motivation, as yet. Possibly a lethal family row as the gunman's sister is one of the victims. At the same time some news people are asking if it was partly racially motivated, because the majority of people killed were black (in Ohio).

Not an AIBU as such but didn't see another thread discussing it. White nationalism just seems to keep gathering speed and aggression.

TBH, the amount of coverage the shooting have had, would make you think we live in America.

we've got plenty of our shit going on and could do with more coverage of here and yeah maybe Europe too.

stucknoue · 04/08/2019 19:48

Was breaking news on the bbc website, haven't watched the news. But it's so frustrating from this side of the Atlantic, America needs gun controls but the politicians are stupid quite frankly

LatteLove · 04/08/2019 19:48

It doesn't mean that the people killed supported gun laws. The victims in the El Paso murders weren't Americans.

Of course not. But time and time again we hear and are horrified by these incidents. Time and time again we see people with their candles and vigils. Time and time again the idiot president and others send their “thoughts and prayers”. And time and time again nothing changes.

LatteLove · 04/08/2019 19:51

*I'm not American, just living here, and the majority of Americans I know don't think like this at all though.

I'm aware that people tend to mix a lot with others who share the same values. But Americans are not a homogeneous mass who all think the same - certainly lots of people here are very frustrated by the lack of gun control.*

I appreciate that, but when it’s time after time of the same kind of thing happening and no political will to sort it, one tends to become a bit immune to the horrors.

MsJRMEsq · 04/08/2019 19:55

A fair bit on the BBC, yes.
I feel so sorry for the families of all the people murdered in Dayton, one especially made me stop and think as the woman was the sister of the murderer. I have no idea how the parents will cope knowing that they have lost both their children and that one was shot by the other.
How on earth can Trump justify his support for the NRA?

Thump · 04/08/2019 19:56

It's not compassion fatigue, it's just frustration that American gun laws have allowed this to happen 250 times this year alone.
Nothing changes, it's far away, there is nothing we can do.
That said, the news agencies are covering it mainly with the same question 'When is enough, enough?'.

If Americans don't care enough to change it, what on earth can we in the UK do about it?
It's sad. 29 lives gone, many more injured and so many lost mothers, daughters, children, sons, sisters, brothers, fathers etc.

But it's very much a case of frustration at the lack of will in the US to battle it.

LatteLove · 04/08/2019 19:57

I think that’s probably a better way of putting it, Thump.

NoddyAndBessie · 04/08/2019 19:58

I've always had huge sympathy for the victims and their families, but I'm starting to be less bothered. No-one in America will stand up and do something, so obviously human life is worthless over there.

Thump · 04/08/2019 20:00

There was some mention of some group lobbying the day before the shootings called Mums against guns or something. Maybe join them.

MsJRMEsq · 04/08/2019 20:02

It makes me so angry that the right to have a gun is worth more than the life of other people. Why do the US government not care that their citizens cannot go out and about without knowing they may be shot?

25 years ago I was in a major US city when a man pulled out a small gun and had it pointed straight at me. I have never been so scared in my life but that was one incident that thankfully turned out safe but for thousands of more that hasn't been the case all so people can keep a gun. It's disgraceful.

Thump · 04/08/2019 20:02

We all know that Trump's answer to guns is more guns. I guarantee his response will be that police responded in 1 minute and shot the Ohio shooter dead - isn't it great that they are armed....... etc. etc...

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 04/08/2019 20:04

Every mass shooting is a tragedy but I find it hard to take much notice while America does nothing to stop them. We've got our own problems.

MsJRMEsq · 04/08/2019 20:04

It's not good enough though is it - he was shot and killed by the police but had a weapon that enabled him to kill 9 people.

ScreamingValenta · 04/08/2019 20:05

It's been the lead story on the BBC website all day, regularly updated, with a live updates thread on a separate page. The latest update, 10 minutes ago, is the words of a Mexican American woman in the locality.

Scaac · 04/08/2019 20:07

It's absolutely disgusting when are they gonna make changes to the ways they just give guns to anyone. Make them illegal and destroy them all how many more families have to be destroyed before it changes! How many children and school massacres will be allowed? Scary the thought of how many more people will be hurt before anything changes. Sort it out USA! Get rid of trump as well he is a racist and a sexual predator look at his friend who has be arrested for sex trafficking! USA needs help and fast! Bring back Obama he would make decent change!

Morgan12 · 04/08/2019 20:09

The government don't care because most politicians are in the pockets of the NRA. The NRA are also a huge voice in the American Legislative Exchange Council. Nobody with a voice actually wants to change the gun laws, they are making too much money.

Rosehip10 · 04/08/2019 20:10

Whats shocking after any US mass shooting is there are always gun nuts droning on about the way to deal with this is more guns - particularly after any school shooting, i.e armed teachers is the answer.

flyingspaghettimonster · 04/08/2019 20:12

Wow. Can't beleive so many of you think it is ok not to care just because it is America.

Kids were injured, last I heard a 4 month old baby died. This attack was a direct result of the President's hate speeches. The area is right by the Mexican border so is used by both Mexicans and Americans, and has a high latino community.

Maybe I took it hard because I got to walmarts most Saturdays for the groceries, and because I can't watch a movie at the cinema or sit down in a fast food place without constantly checking exits and the people around me wondering if today is my turn. My daughter had two separate kids get shot coming to school this year. They go through lockdowns when it happens on or near school property, but the kids don't know if there is an active shooter in their school or not. Remembdr how bored you got as kids, during fire drills? My kids spend an hour trying to stay quiet and still in their cubby holes or locked in a tiny bathroom with their whole class, or in the case of the actual lockdowns, crying quietly under their desk while other kids write letters to their loved ones.

It is horrible, and just because it is happening to americans and some americans are gun obsessed doesn't mean they all are.

LatteLove · 04/08/2019 20:16

Can’t so many of you think it is ok not to care just because it is America.

It’s not about not caring. I’ve cried many tears over the years at these news stories from the states. But nothing ever changes and I can’t change anything so I reckon I’m best sparing myself the emotional upset.

LatteLove · 04/08/2019 20:18

Quite. Madness! Do these people ever fucking listen to themselves?!

Thump · 04/08/2019 20:22

It's not that we don't care. We do. I've just watched a live news conference from Dayton.

All the speakers alluded in some way to at least mental health checks.
But we think things will change, yet it NEVER EVER DOES.

AngeloMysterioso · 04/08/2019 20:25

Not an AIBU as such but didn't see another thread discussing it.

There was a thread about it in AIBU this morning but it was zapped almost immediately.

Whats shocking after any US mass shooting is there are always gun nuts droning on about the way to deal with this is more guns - particularly after any school shooting, i.e armed teachers is the answer.

If anything the El Paso attack demonstrates the stupidity of that argument- Texas is an open carry state, so where were all these hero average joes with guns I wonder?

Unfortunately this tweet pretty much sums up the situation- and this was 4 years ago...

Is there much coverage in the UK of the US shootings this weekend?
Thump · 04/08/2019 20:29

And Trump is the dude who ridicules the mayor of London........ 250 mass shootings in your domain honey in one year........ The lunacy of the rhetoric isn't lost on us here.

Spudina · 04/08/2019 20:29

I just saw that Trump has spent his day golfing. Abhorrent man. He's responsible for the rise in white supremacist hate crime, and responds by fucking playing golf. In Australia they had a mass shooting. They refused to name the shooter and refused him access to newspapers etc, so he couldn't see the publicity he had. Where shooters survive (and publish so called manifestos, so clearly want the attention) this is definitely the way to handle them. Americans need to vote out the NRA backing politicians in the next elections. It's the only way.

Eustasiavye · 04/08/2019 20:30

Nothing will change.
Whilst it is legal for people to carry guns there will always be the risk that they will use it.
That is common sense.
