To not leave holiday villa at designated time tomorrow?

Nextphonewontbesamsung · 03/08/2019 01:20

We are staying in a rural village in the south of France and are supposed to check out of our villa at 10.00 am. Howver, tonight there is a concert in the village square (our villa overlooks this square) and there is a band that have played a 7 hour set at FULL VOLUME. They have gone from Ed Sheeran and Coldplay covers to full on heavy metal and still going strong at 2.14am local time. Currently we're into about the 10th minute of their homage to Feels Like Teen Spirit. I have my alarm set for 8am so that we can be up early to finish packing and cleaning. Aibu to move my alarm back by at least an hour? We won't be ready to leave by 10 but I have a long drive tomorrow and it is not safe when so sleep deprived! Needless to say I am enormously fucked off!

Europeans stay up way later than the British do. Our Scout group went to Northern Italy on a camp a few summers ago and the locals were up playing music for hours despite the kids being in bed by 10. No one complained as we were in their country.

Frazzled2207 · 03/08/2019 09:05

It's shit but yanbu.

If you arrived at the place after a long drive and found it wasn't ready because the previous occupant had decided to have a lie in you wouldn't be impressed

Echobelly · 03/08/2019 09:10

This sort of thing is why I always take earplugs on holiday! (Plus my husband often snores) After the fact, I know.

I think everyone should lay off OP. We've all had thoughts we might not have at other times when we are exhausted and worried about something we have to do next day - this doesn't mean OP is selfish and wants everything to made an exception of for, she just wanted to find a solution to her problem and the most obvious one to go for was to find a way to get more sleep.

Vulpine · 03/08/2019 09:11

So much vitriol on this thread.

FamilyOfAliens · 03/08/2019 09:12

I was a junior doctor, and had a 24 hour shift starting the next morning.

I know yours was a stealth boast Babdoc, but please tell me you slept after your 450-mile drive on no sleep and before your 24-hour-shift as a doctor! I would worry for the patients of any doctor working when they were so sleep-deprived.

pictish · 03/08/2019 09:14

These late night concerts are a thing in France. Fil lives in the south and his village have them in the summer for various reasons. Always till 2 or 3am.

Anyway OP yabu. Chuck a coffee down you and bash on.

TSSDNCOP · 03/08/2019 09:14

It’s a pity the fiesta was on your last night, it would’ve been fun to go and savour local life.

I would almost like you to send that crazy mail though and see how fast the villa owner puts through a charge on your credit card. My bet

CorbynsComrade · 03/08/2019 09:16

Smells like teen spirit
Smells like entitlement

Skinnychip · 03/08/2019 09:19

I presumed the email was facetious?? Surely cleaners coming in the house would wake them anyway?
We had to leave around 5 or 6am last year in France in order to get our ferry, well before the checkout time. We werent allowed to drive within the campsite at that time so had to pack most bits (excluding bedding) the night before and wake at stupid o clock to do the rest. The holiday rep asked if we could also clean the chalet as they had a tight turnaround. I gave it a quick tidy and left reasonable but since a) they provided no cleaning materials apart from a dustpan and brush, and b) we were leaving very early i thought that was a bit of a cheek.

RadioSpice · 03/08/2019 09:19

This whole debacle reminds me of a 'friend' of mine who went to Monaco during the F1 weekend, and spent the entire afternoon complaining that her kids couldn't take a nap and were grouchy because of the noise! It's a street circuit what did she bloody expect. Confused

Instatwat · 03/08/2019 09:23

87% YABU. Hope that helps.

Skinnychip · 03/08/2019 09:23

I have to say though we haven't always left at the allotted checkout time mainly because DH has no concept of time in s/c accomodation, so sometimes been 15-30 minutes after and never met a cleaner!!

Honeyroar · 03/08/2019 09:24

If id have had that email and been expected to clean while you slept for two hours past the changeover time you'd have woken up to an email telling you "I hope you enjoyed your lie in. All your stuff from around the house is in bin bags at the local tip waiting for you to collect."
Most Southern European countries have village fiestas in villages at weekends that go on late. It's their culture. It's also their culture to sleep all afternoon and do things in the late evening/night. When I lived in Italy we'd eat at 10pm, most people worked until 8pm. They've probably been rolling their eyes all summer at all the Brits laughing and screaming round pools while they try to have a siesta!

Just take it in turns driving while the other one snoozes. You'll be fine.

pictish · 03/08/2019 09:25

Ha ha I love Betsy’s email...the haughty tone of self-entitlement and the notion that the owner has some sort of obligation to make sure OP has enough sleep so she can drive. Safety first and all that. Excellent!

iklboo · 03/08/2019 09:25

find the email address of the concert organiser and let them know how disappointed I was with their lack of consideration towards people who had travelled to visit their area, only to be aurally assaulted until 2:30am, without any prior warning

This smacks so much of Brits Abroad entitlement it's hilarious. How dare the local people who live here all year round enjoy themselves!

Isatis · 03/08/2019 09:35

Honestly, I have NEVER checked out of anywhere on time.

Seriously, how can anyone be that incompetent?

Ivegotthree · 03/08/2019 09:36

You leave when you're supposed to leave. Don't give us Brits a bad name abroad.

fussychica · 03/08/2019 09:38

2am? thats not a fiesta!
Try Spain next year, fiestas go on all night, usually the band stops at around 6am.
After the first couple of years we used to time our holiday to coincide with our town's fiesta so we didnt have 5 sleepless nights, always ensuring the place we were holidaying in didn't have a fiesta on the same datesWink.

Isatis · 03/08/2019 09:43

OP, in the time you spent getting cross about this and posting on MN, you could have finished the packing and tidying, put the rubbish out and got everything ready for loading the car. Unless you've left the place filthy, there's no need for cleaning as the cleaners will clean everything anyway, and in my experience they're usually perfectly happy if you've left the dishwasher to finish its cycle and not emptied it. So you could then simply set the alarm for 9.15 and be up and out in time.

Ivegotthree · 03/08/2019 09:43

Yes agree @fussychica we have driven to the airport in Spain on one hour's sleep after having all night fiestas complete with village brass band going past our door every hour through the night, firecrackers etc.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 03/08/2019 09:43

Gosh, BetsyBigNose, I purposely scrolled back to read that e-mail. It can't be sent, it just can't. Have you ever managed to persuade anybody with a request like that? It's cringeworthy.

OP, if you are worried about your lack of sleep then leave at 10am as agreed - and pull over in a safe spot when you get tired. 20 minutes for a nap now and again would refresh you but if you're really struggling then book in somewhere else to arrive in the afternoon and leave tomorrow. At the agreed time.

Violashift · 03/08/2019 09:44

That email!

Mumsnet gold - cheered me up on a tired morning. Grin

I would just leave on time op. One hour wouldn't make a huge difference.

Alsohuman · 03/08/2019 09:47

Just read the suggested email 🤣

girlwithadragontattoo · 03/08/2019 09:51

Hi OP.

I'm a reservations manager and this sort of thing really buts back the cleaners day. The cleaning staff won't just have the property your staying in to clean, with you being there and getting in their way you'll delay their whole day. They have start times and finish times of work just like everyone else and have been asked to come in at 10 to make sure it's ready for other guests arriving.

Roussette · 03/08/2019 09:51

The OP should be well on her way. Clocks are forward one hour.
