To hate the word ‘Mumma’??

Just makes me cringe! I don’t get it - is it meant to be a posher version of ‘mama’? I suddenly see so many people referring to themselves, or their own mothers as ‘Mumma’. Irrationally annoys me Grin

YANBU. It's grim. And childish.

LauraMipsum · 29/07/2019 14:03

DD calls me mama. She pronounces it a bit like mumma unless she's exasperated with me in which case she draws out the 'a's as long as she can Grin

I'm not sure it's worth getting too worried about.

Youaremysunshine6 · 29/07/2019 14:05

The pronunciation confuses me too - is it Mumma like Mummy or more of a ‘Ma’ sound like ‘Mama’?

I did say I know it’s irrational! I just don’t know why it’s such a thing!!

My DD started calling me this from about 4years old,I don't know where it came from,Ihoped it was a fad and would go say.It didn't,I hated it.
She is now a teenager so I am now 'Oh Muuuum' if she's exasperated by me or 'nice, slim, wonderful mum ' if she wants something.

Ivegotthree · 29/07/2019 14:20

yanbu. The only one that's worse is Mama.

Jallebi · 29/07/2019 14:22

YABU. 'Hate' is a strong word for something other women choose to call themselves. It's quite common where I come from (South Asian country), I call my mum 'mumma' when I am speaking to her, and at 60 she still addresses her 85 year old mother as mumma too.

In our family its pronounced as mumma like mummy, and has no connotations of poshness!

CitadelsofScience · 29/07/2019 14:23

My adult dd calls me mama but pronounces it mumma, she does it to wind me up.

hellsbellsmelons · 29/07/2019 14:24

I'm just singing....
Mammaaaa.....Oooooooowooooooo! Didn't mean to make you cry....
That will be in my head all day now.
Arrrghhhh......

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 29/07/2019 14:24

Yep.

To go with bubba.

PurpleDaisies · 29/07/2019 14:25

Children can get away with anything really. Grown ups-less so. Hate mom, momma, mumma and mamma.

CrackOn · 29/07/2019 14:26

Really? Isn't life too short?

LadyBrienneofTarth · 29/07/2019 14:27

My children chose to call me mama from a very young age - I don't mind as long as it's said with respect - I get mum and mama a lot - mother occasionally when my teen ds is being funny - mummy when my teen dd is being funny - I really don't mind

Hotterthanahotthing · 29/07/2019 14:29

I don't hate mums or mind what they want to be called,I hated that my DD called that.I didn't hate her but years of being called Mumma,I was happy with mummy, mum but she had decided.

Fraggling · 29/07/2019 14:30

My kids called me mumma although I called myself mummy.

I'm sorry this makes you so angry. They're just children, I think that's quite strong to feel that badly about it.

As for the person who said its childish, um. They're children!

MrsBobDylan · 29/07/2019 14:30

My youngest son calls me Mumma, I haven't a clue why. My other two dropped Mummy very early on and stuck with Mum but my 5 yr old is set on irritating you op 😁

Unluckyinlove2019 · 29/07/2019 14:31

My DD calls me mumma sometimes, and occasionally mum-mum.

Do not have a clue where she's picked them up from but my heart melts whenever she says them. She's 4, and I hope she doesn't grow out of saying it as secretly I love it.

chipsandgin · 29/07/2019 14:36

Definitely a thing in the world of hubby, bubs & huns. Haven’t been on there for years hut I’d hazard a guess it’s popular on Netmums!

ambereeree · 29/07/2019 14:37

My 3 year old calls me mumma. Don't know where she heard it.

Fraggling · 29/07/2019 14:39

Comes to something when there is anger at hearing what a little kid has decided to call its mum!

I suppose we should have all been 'NO! Don't call me that! You must call me this!' To our babies :D that would be encouraging when they're saying their first words!

Mind still call me mumma they're 10 and 12. I expect op would want them sent off to some kind reeduction camp :D

Coldilox · 29/07/2019 14:41

My son calls me Mama. He calls my wife Mummy. He likes us to have different names.

Get over it and stop being so fucking judgemental.

thecatsthecats · 29/07/2019 14:41

My cats call me Mumma ok, that's a result of my diseased brain.

I would take just about anything but Mom though. As an expat Northerner in the Midlands, it makes me cringe.

CookPassBabtridge · 29/07/2019 14:43

My kids call me Mama and I love it.. my DP is half middle eastern and they say mama and baba. People who get annoyed with names need to get a life.

Clawdy · 29/07/2019 14:47

I like Mummy, Mum, and Mama is OK - my grown kids say Mama in texts and birthday cards, almost jokingly. But I'm not keen on Mumma, either.

stucknoue · 29/07/2019 14:47

My children chose mama and continue to use it as adults, it's their choice - why does it matter to you?

Tinkletwat · 29/07/2019 14:47

Did it not come from the instamums? There was a thread about the slogan tops a few months back.
