Do you think festival should have helped me?

Not really a big deal, but home and musing. Went to a festival this weekend, on my own. Had an ok time.

For context my stuff was really heavy, 8 man tent huge heavy, only one I could borrow and obviously had to bring it back.

The night before I’ve left my asthma inhaler ran out, and I’ve started bleeding and cramping from a minor procedure I had done last week. I had an asthma attack about a week ago too.

Anyway the car was absolutely miles away, through mud and hills. Sincerely worried I could not physically make it. So I thought I was sensible going to camp welfare and asking if there was any way to hire a buggy to take the stuff to the car. They said no but sent me to first aid to see if I could get an inhaler to manage the asthma doing the drag.

First aid wouldn’t give me a spare inhaler unless I was having an actual attack, not just feeling wheezy. No help available obviously for the cramping as I need a gp to assess that.

So basically no help.

Now I did make it to the car. Very very breathless and in pain, car got stuck in the mud and had to be towed. Stupid gear and I fell down a few hills too!

Hence not a big deal because while breathless I have made it home (2hr drive) and have my inhalers. And yes it’s my own fault for not picking up my spare!!

So just a hypothetical really, were they unreasonable not to help me when I asked? It could have ended differently.

She asked to borrow a cart.

They charge for carts at festivals, for people who wish to avoid struggling with their heavy gear. Why should OP get one for free?

All of this is part of going to a festival and always has been. I've had some horrific experiences carrying heavy loads long distances in and out of festivals, everyone does, that's why people either try and pack lightly or PAY for a cart.

Imagine if they had to give a free cart to everyone struggling with their stuff!

1stmonkey · 28/07/2019 20:44

YABU. You have to take some personal responsibility. If you had an injury and an asthma attack in the run up, what on earth made you think it was a good idea to go alone, or go at all??

MyAppleTree · 28/07/2019 20:54

Mother I clearly said HIRE in the OP and subsequently.

I have already accepted IABU

OP posts:
MyAppleTree · 28/07/2019 20:55

Rhymes I carried it in. My situation changed while there.

But again, because of the inhaler thing I already said IWBU.

Totally crazy to take an 8-man tent for single occupancy! Why didn’t you buy a cheap lightweight 2-man tent?

You CHOSE to:

-take an unsuitable tent you couldn’t carry
-not take your own trolley
-go to a festival on your own without thinking who would help you
-go to a festival whilst bleeding/cramping
-go to a festival without your asthma medication

You made all these choices knowingly. So the outcome was yours to deal with.

MrsGrannyWeatherwax · 28/07/2019 21:26

Ha I love the fact that @MyAppleTree has clearly accepted she’s been unreasonable and people are still pilling on.

She gets it! Sounds as though it was just a bad day.

fuzzyduck1 · 29/07/2019 11:12

Shame she didn’t know the inflatable flamingo trick.

fuzzyduck1 · 29/07/2019 11:27

Aged and all that health and safety have helped make the ticket prices what they are today.

Why can’t people take ownership for their decisions instead of blaming others for their misfortune

I do feel sorry for the OP but as she has admitted it was her own shortcomings in preparation that caused the issues on the first place.

Yes the organisers have a duty of care if you are hurt onsite be it there fault or not. but it doesn’t extend to the health of attendees on arrival otherwise everyone would end up having a medical before they are aloud onsite.

whothedaddy · 29/07/2019 11:33

you took an 8 man tent you couldn't carry. You didn't bring medication you knew you may need. Your procedure is your concern not theres.

I'm afraid to say I think you put yourself in an unnessersary situation. This is on you

@fuzzyduck1 What an appalling way to speak about disabled people.

TulipsTulipsTulips · 29/07/2019 11:45

Tricky one but as adults we should all take responsibility for our own health. I think the festival handled this ok

fuzzyduck1 · 29/07/2019 13:22

@Cohle I totally. Agree @LuckyLou7 should know better.

I’m just speaking from experience about them selling tickets been offered several over the years

Cohle · 29/07/2019 13:34

No, I was talking about your comments Fuzzy. Hmm

B3ck89 · 29/07/2019 14:21

So you had an operation not long ago, you went without an inhaler - clearly knowing you need it, after having an asthma attack.
And you take an 8 man tent for 1 person?
I’m struggling on wondering where your common sense is? Hmm

Sorry if that’s harsh, but you made bad decisions.

I’ve just looked and go outdoors sells a 1 man tent for £12 how the hell did you think carrying an 8 man tent a week after an operation and having asthma would work out?

B3ck89 · 29/07/2019 14:32

Just read it wasn’t an actual operation...
Still a ridiculously stupid idea to go

MyAppleTree · 29/07/2019 14:36

B3ck why? I took and inhaler and had no issues when I set out. I explained to 8man and it was for works benefit.

Anyway I already said IWBU.

so you were expecting "the festival" to find and supply an additional inhaler because your supply was inadequate? They wouldn't have been qualified doctors with proper insurance to allow prescribing medicine on site, even if they did decide to stock a wide range of prescription medicines on the offchance that people failed to take sufficient quantities of their own.
The over packing / large tent? sounds like there was a hire plan in place that you didn't engage in and then asked for it to be applied retrospectively? again, were they supposed to magic one out of their well equipped store cupboard or to take one back from the people who had planned and paid in advance?

Coffeeandchocolate9 · 29/07/2019 14:49

I hope you are recovering well.

I went to a festival last week and I take my own wheelbarrow - there are lots of collapsible cart type things you can get nowadays that are ideal for festival camping gear lugging! As others have said, a cheap two man tent would be your best bet if you decide to go again next year.

I'm a bit surprised that many people including you in the OP seem Rio think that first aid have spare inhalers that they lend you. As a qualified first aider I've always been told very strictly that we must not lend somebody an inhaler - we're not even allowed to dispense them their own inhaler, as we're not qualified to prescribe or administer drugs! If A.N. other festival goer were to lend you their inhaler that would be a private arrangement and absolutely not something we would suggest or condone.

Boneshere · 29/07/2019 15:27

You shouldn't have gone.

You didn't have the right equipment and you took a health risk.

PuppyMonkey · 29/07/2019 15:48

Think it’s all been said already OP, but I’m really only still here to find out more about this inflatable tent that you put up all alone. I want one..Grin

MyAppleTree · 29/07/2019 17:03

Outing here but TENT

OP posts:
MyAppleTree · 29/07/2019 17:05

Did that work? Currently drying the bloody thing after washing it!

Do you think festival should have helped me?
OP posts:
MyAppleTree · 29/07/2019 17:06

Did that on my own too.

Though maybe it’s just because I’m used to hay making and lugging bales around for horses. Well toned clearly. It’s really easy to put up!
