I'm late 40s and am ever swathed head to toe in beige frumpery; DM is 80 and dresses like a teenager.

2Rebecca · 27/07/2019 19:39

Yes although now in mid 50s and not dressing much different to early 40s but definitely not the same as when I was in my 20s although I have just made a pair of dungarees from a pattern I used in my 20s and similar material and for sporting stuff I don't look much different. Higher neck lines and usually covered shoulders and I have bunions so different footwear and can't wear footwear without socks or hosiery now.

pigsDOfly · 27/07/2019 19:42

I'm not sure what dressing your age means.

I'm 70 and retired, so no work clothes.

I have to walk the dog every day so mostly wear skinny jeans and some sort of top: vest tops, shirts, jumpers, rather depending on the weather. I've been wearing sorts and vest tops mostly over the last few days.

Sometimes wear skirts of different styles and lengths. Rarely wear dresses unless for more formal occasions.

Wear boots in the colder weather, have several pairs, mostly ankle boots with chunky heels. In warmer weather I tend to wear pumps. For smarter occasions I wear heels.

I don't know if that's dressing my age or not, I wear what I think suits my body. I'm slim and fairly well toned so can wear most of the things I want to wear.

CSIblonde · 27/07/2019 19:49

I wear what suits my build & figure: a lot of black jeans or leggings. If I'm at work quite fitted or tailored trousers with cream, white or pastels on top as I think baggy if youre not skinny (size 10 when younger, now a size 14)can make you look bigger. Current fashion is hideous anyway. I've always mixed classics that suited me with the odd fashionable colour or top.

tierraJ · 27/07/2019 20:11

I don't know!

I'm 42 & at work I wear a uniform so out of work it's casual clothes or gym gear during the day & smarter clothes if I go out for an evening / night out.

I've lost a bit of weight so like to show off my figure a bit. For example I've toned up my legs at the gym so Im happy to wear skinny jeans & short skirts / dresses.
I like following fashions & keep an eye on magazines etc without being an actual fashion victim!

I do hope I dont look like mutton dressed as lamb, I know I used to dress too 'old' & frumpy when I was younger & heavier so I just want to avoid being like that again.

ragged · 27/07/2019 21:11

I just typed in "How does a 50 yr old dress" & "How does a 20 yr old dress" : google brings up the same darn things! The 50 yr olds have MORE cardis but the 20 yr olds still have some cardis.

Well. That settles... nothing.

ragged · 27/07/2019 21:13

Take it back... the 20 yr old suggestions feature MORE cardigans than the 50 yr old set. Pfffft.

Spanielmadness · 27/07/2019 21:25

I’m 38 and my mother despairs of my wearing Micky Mouse jumpers, short pink dungaree dresses and anything else which makes you feel bright and cheerful!

NigellasGuest · 27/07/2019 21:37

I often flash my chest with plunging necklines for evening wear and I'm 55 but my boobs are small and haven't flopped and my skin there is good, so I DONT CARE and if you dont like it, dont look!

BigFluffyCatWhiskers · 27/07/2019 21:51

I haven't got a clue. Can somebody point me to some guidance or instructions as to what I should be wearing aged 51? I'll most likely ignore them of course.

Why have you started this thread OP?

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 27/07/2019 21:52

Joe Browns do clothes with woodland animals (and other sorts of stuff). I wear Lycra leggings and sleeveless tanks, but that’s because I do exercise classes.

The rest of the time it’s leggings or skinny jeans and t shirts or tops. I get stuff from Brand Alley, so often Mint Velvet jumpers or Phase 8 dresses if I’m being posh. I also get clothes from Sainsbury’s. I don’t care what anyone thinks, as long as I’m not looking like a hooker.

mindproject · 27/07/2019 21:55

I'm late 40s. I dress like a 30 year old. I don't want to make myself look older. People guess my age as 30, but I did get ID'd a month ago.

GrapefruitGin · 27/07/2019 22:02

Nope but I’m 29 so I can get away with dressing ‘young’

Echobelly · 27/07/2019 22:02

Maybe, but I'm not sure it means much anymore. 'Dressing your age' meant much more when, for the vast majority of people teens = sowing wild oats, 20s = settling down 30 = settled 40 = middle aged 60 = old etc.

Now people might marry in their late 30s, having gone out and partied for half their life, still have lots of single mates who party hard, not work at a job with a dress code etc, and not consider 'dressing their age'

TBH, I've been influenced more by the fact I've been in a job with a smartish dress code for the last 6.5 years, so my natural scruffy, slightly punky style wasn't going to wash and I can't by as much out-there stuff as i used to, so I don't wear it at weekends. I still dress in a slightly unconventional way, with lots of colours and prints, but I wouldn't call it 'younger' than my age (41)

BigFluffyCatWhiskers · 27/07/2019 22:03

Foxyloxy1plus1 - oh yes, I also do Joe Browns! I have a number of cat dresses! I also do leggings and go to work. No complaints!!

Pasithea · 27/07/2019 22:06

Gudren Sjoden pieces. Lucy and yak dungarees and lots of due to my disability . Long skirts. Lots of scarves. Lots of bright colour. But I am an artist. 51. I do love individual stuff from independent places. . Disliking. Next marks etc more and more.

TooManyPaws · 27/07/2019 22:21

I'm 58 and my wardrobe is a mixture of goth, hippy, Frida Kahlo, and just plain boring hoodies and leggings.i buy what I like and that's it. When a foot operation meant that I can't wear heels or soles with little padding, I just started a collection of various coloured and patterned Docs for work instead. I thought that dressing your age went out 40 years ago to be replaced by dressing for your figure and taste?

Redcrayons · 27/07/2019 22:25

I'm not really sure what 'dressing my age' looks like. I'm 48.

I definitely see clothes which are too young for me on sites like Asos/ BooHoo. Usually skimpy clubbing clothes. And also clothes which look too old for me.

I don't think I've got a style. I do own a lot of cardigans, tbf, so maybe I'm in denial.

Egghead68 · 27/07/2019 22:48

50 and wear what I want (mainly the Zara black and white spotty dress and other similar dresses atm).

Egghead68 · 27/07/2019 22:49

Plus gym kit. No cardies.

Cloudyyy · 27/07/2019 22:49

Hmm I think I maybe dress a bit older than my age because so many women I know my age dress very casual (jeans, t-shirts, converse) etc especially other mums at groups. I like to be quite smart and prefer fitted clothes in nice fabrics. Lots of mid-length skirts, dresses, classic cuts and not fashionable as such!

CaptainMyCaptain · 28/07/2019 08:07

What's wrong with cardigans anyway. Useful if you find yourself in differing temperatures and can take them on and off easily. I have several, all in bright colours and mostly hand knitted like this www.bing.com/images/search?q=andi+satterlund+designs&qpvt=andi+satterlund+designs&FORM=IGRE , they also extend the season that I can wear my 50s retro dresses.

longearedbat · 28/07/2019 08:22

I don't own a skirt or dress. I never liked wearing them and chucked them all out years ago.
I wear skinny jeans, t shirts and trainers/sandals in the summer. Skinny jeans, fleeces and boots/trainers in the winter. Have some posh trousers and tops for fancy do's.
I like my clothes to be comfortable above all. Couldn't care less about fashion. I am mid 60's.

Lweji · 28/07/2019 08:51

Jeans, particularly tight jeans, are the worst in a hot Summer.

Skirts, and ideally dresses, are 100x cooler and comfortable. Unless people go for tight skin or pencil skirts.

RedElephants · 28/07/2019 09:02

Craftycorvid
Exactly,
I'm 53 in August, with DSs who are almost 18 & 21,
I wear what I feel comfortable in,

At home mainly dressed in black, skinny jeans, sweatshirts/jumpers and boxy type t shirts, trainers or boots.
I work in Early Years, so slightly more colourful, Think dark colour trousers, white/cream/light blue/khaki green tops and cards.
