Why do so many people distrust socialism?

Is it due to the legacy of Marx, the notion that it's a race to the bottom, the feeling that those who work harder should get paid more or a mistrust of human nature?
I do understand these concerns but what is more worrying if the vast inequality that seems to prevail nowadays. Thoughts please.

If you think your style given the topic is appropriate, sion, so be it. There’s nothing that can be done with that. But please don’t address me on this topic You’re not equipped to deal with it.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 26/07/2019 12:57

Sorry but when you have a self declared Marxist appearing under posters of Stalin and Mao, I think your comment is the stupid one

Someone I dont like has done something I dont like that means an entire economic model doesnt work because I cant use my brain correctly by knowing how to use critical thought, I cant wait till education gets funded adequately because is some posters here are anything to go by letting the daily mail, telegraph, the express educate you, you become an idiot

sionnachbeag · 26/07/2019 12:59

I'm totally equipped to deal with it, I asked ypu a question which exposed your hypocrisy and you can't deal with it.

gingerbreadsprinkle · 26/07/2019 12:59

I have not said that, ginger. You are attacking arguments I haven’t made.

You are arguing against all forms of inheritance tax, yes? If proper tax was taken, services would improve including services needed for lifelong care of individuals with special needs. Like I said I used to live in the US, the amounts of money needed for the most basic levels of service is astonishing. We also still pay around 45% of our income in tax... We pay, pay, pay and all it does is go to the military and we get worse service. You know why? Because our conservatives have people fooled with the same arguments that people here are making. Yeah, average people might save $100 in tax but paying everything out of pocket is far far more expensive.

dodgeballchamp · 26/07/2019 12:59

Far fewer people would need societal support if a select few weren’t permitted to accumulate ridiculous amounts of wealth. Your child wouldn’t need your assets to have a comfortable life if such wealth went back to the state as a matter of course to fund housing and public services

TheBigBallOfOil · 26/07/2019 13:00

I was arguing against 100% inheritance tax. I am not against all taxation.

sionnachbeag · 26/07/2019 13:01

and i repeatedly said I didn't suggest 100 percent inheritence tax.

Mammajay · 26/07/2019 13:02

Thanks Lweji. I am actually going to read the manifestos when the next election is called. Do you think proportional representation would give stronger, more balanced government??

TheBigBallOfOil · 26/07/2019 13:02

sion, step back. This is really awful. I’ve reported.

Shortstuff99 · 26/07/2019 13:03

Someone I dont like has done something I dont like that means an entire economic model doesnt work because I cant use my brain correctly by knowing how to use critical thought, I cant wait till education gets funded ad

You could rationalise anything like that. I bet you’re not a big Trump supporter are you. Never mind he’s just someone you don’t like.

Get real, we are talking about a man who would be in charge of the economy, standing under a poster of murderous tyrants, claiming he wanted to see capitalism destroyed. We are the 5th richest country on Earth. If you think things are bad now, what do you think is going to pay for all the services you use if capitalism is destroyed. You’ll be begging for The conservatives to come back and fix it. Again.

sionnachbeag · 26/07/2019 13:04

I've said nothing wrong.

You demanded answers and got them, at no point have i supported anything other than fairer inheritence tax.

BolloxtoGender · 26/07/2019 13:05

It doesn't work. Greed and human nature lead to corruption.
Some where in the process between the government gathering wealth and the government redistribution it for the greater good - the people in power (government) gathers and keeps the wealth, i.e. corruption.

Shortstuff99 · 26/07/2019 13:05

charitable status of private school fees

Costs the country a lot less than all those kids suddenly turning up at the local state school. Deluded idiocy.

TheBigBallOfOil · 26/07/2019 13:05

We’ll see what HQ thinks.
Again I’d just ask if this is how you’d discuss these questions with a parent of a kid with SN IRL. I hope for your sake it isn’t, I really do.

sionnachbeag · 26/07/2019 13:07

Im really sorry but you used this as your point and now we arent allowed to discuss it?

Shortstuff99 · 26/07/2019 13:07

fairer inheritence tax.

This topic really does bring out the base jealousy of humans. What could be less fair than taking away people’s money that they carefully saved up when they die, and giving it to people that never saved a penny.

sionnachbeag · 26/07/2019 13:08

Charitable status for private schools costs the coubtry about 3.5 billion, the same as it would cost to have those children in schools

gingerbreadsprinkle · 26/07/2019 13:08

I have children with SN and I actually think that it's a relevant conversation to have.

BlueSkiesLies · 26/07/2019 13:09

Is it due to the legacy of Marx, the notion that it's a race to the bottom, the feeling that those who work harder should get paid more or a mistrust of human nature?

All of these. Socialism doesn’t create a more equal society as human nature means people always try and position themselves at an advantage.

sionnachbeag · 26/07/2019 13:11

socialism doesnt necessarily mean communism. Social democracies incorporate many aspects or socialism and work just fine.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 26/07/2019 13:11

No I dont like Trump but thats because of his actions like um I dont know caging children and seperating them from their parents not because of if he stood under a poster Hmm

So what part of funding state education dont you like?
Which part of an adequate funded NHS dont you like?
Which part of strengthening workers rights and banning zero hour contracts dont you like?
Which part of rental caps in an extremely inflated rental market dont you like?
Which part of a funded social care system dont you like?
Which part of disabled people being given respect and a life dont you like?
Which part of tackling homlessness and poverty dont you like?
Which part of building new houses all over the country dont you like?
Which part of corporations having to pay a reasonable amount of tax and not 0% dont you like?

Im sure you'll either ad-hominem or straw man yourself or just not answer this tbh

gingerbreadsprinkle · 26/07/2019 13:13

This topic really does bring out the base jealousy of humans. What could be less fair than taking away people’s money that they carefully saved up when they die, and giving it to people that never saved a penny.

Generational wealth does not always mean that money has been made and saved in a moral way. Much of historical wealth has come from exploitation of colonies and there is definitely a portion of it that was accrued from the back of slavery.

Shortstuff99 · 26/07/2019 13:18

Oh do give it up. Plenty of people in this country work up a nest egg and pay off a mortgage without involvement in slavery. Pathetic drivel.

I suppose shops should only sell 1 of each type of product too so someone can’t go to John Lewis and buy a better kettle than someone who can only afford a basic one from Asda. Because that’s the same argument as against private schools.

Branster · 26/07/2019 13:20

Because it doesn’t fucking work. It’s an utopian concept which invariably degenerates into communism and/or dictatorship whereby nobody is free to make own choices or free to think for themselves.
Survival of the fittest gives best results in the natural world and this works with humans as well. But humans use compassion (which is either an instinctive response or a result of a civilised society) to support the less fortunate. That’s what works, not equality for all and control dressed as spoon-feeding bullshit.

Shortstuff99 · 26/07/2019 13:21

Im sure you'll either ad-hominem or straw man yourself or just not answer this tbh

Those aren’t the actual policies that Corbyn and McDonnel would inflict on this country so it is a straw man to set me up to attack them. They are a Trojan horse to deliver much more hard hitting attacks on people who have any degree of sucess financially. Read up on land value tax for starters. You’re welcome.
