Anyone else think that was possibly the smuggest walk into Downing Street ever?

Was I alone in praying she would trip up?

A new alliance with the Swiss should be the starting point for financial services, the commonwealth for trade agreements, and the world for business and enterprise

Why do you think the Swiss would want to tie their financial services to ours?
The commonwealth exists only in your pre 20th C mind, Australia's main trading partner is China and Canada's is the USA, the world is made of very large countries and trading blocs, the UK is a very small player, easily pushed around, as has been shown by the Russians, the US, the Iranians, the Chinese etc

We need to be part of a large bloc too, both politically and economically, Thatcher knew it too.

DippyAvocado · 25/07/2019 08:50

I would not tie us to any country US or otherwise.

The UK is not big enough or powerful enough to operate without being part of an alliance (the Iran incident is proof enough of that). We have to align ourselves with either one of the few nations that are independently powerful (USA or China) or we could build a powerful alliance with our nearest neighbours. Or we can continue to fall down the economic rankings, losing any global influence we currently retain. Maybe this is why Raab has been appointed as foreign secretary. You don't need a good grasp of geography if other countries don't want to deal with you anyway.

LaurieMarlow · 25/07/2019 08:51

The only people that can’t see it, are the small pool of remainers screeching from the roof tops about their second homes.

Well that’s total bollocks, everyone in Ireland thinks the UK has taken leave of its senses.

But y’know, if you’re going to be like that good riddance.

falcon5 · 25/07/2019 08:53

People seem oddly vested into turning this into a broad ranging leave versus remain discussion rather than focusing on comments on whether it's appropriate and safeguarding democracy for a minister who broke ministerial code of conduct to be appointed as home Secretary.

urbanlife · 25/07/2019 08:53

I think Corbyn is an interesting fellow, and I support his position on climate, a more equal fairer country and listening to the people above politicians, he has a great many qualities. The Devolving of government and power bases I also support. I do not support is position on the IRA or Israel or Palestines. A much more complex solution is needed in Palestine (that won’t happen with the current Israeli government sadly) I certainly don’t support labours lurch to the left and communism. They need to appeal to a broader voting base.
As I said I am neutral. I have supported both labour and conservative parties. I would like to see much more emphasis on the climate and pollution after Brexit. I abhor the treatment of animals in the food chain, and believe in free values.

I don’t believe our future is tethered to authoritarian superstate.

PigeonofDoom · 25/07/2019 08:54

Of the leave voters I know, one has a second home, another has a second and a third. Not slagging them off for this, but just pointing out that plenty of well off people voted leave as well!

LaurieMarlow · 25/07/2019 08:54

Lovely. What if Russia/China starts getting aggressive and throwing their weight around. Who do we ally with then? We can’t handle Iran ffs.

Better hope Putin plays nice. Lol.

urbanlife · 25/07/2019 08:54

The Swiss have already indicated a willingness to merge.

LaurieMarlow · 25/07/2019 08:57

Erm, we’re going to need more than that.

What about passporting urban? What do we do when we lose that (which we will). Our whole selling point to US/Asian financial institutions is our position as an English speaking country in the EU.

falcon5 · 25/07/2019 08:57

And as if on cue.....

urbanlife · 25/07/2019 08:58

And you think the mighty EU will come to the rescue??

Germany sent their troops to the NATO training session with broomsticks because they don’t have any guns!

Only the UK along with France have any serious military clout. It’s moments like this when I realise most of you really have no idea what you are talking about!!

NewtonPulsifer · 25/07/2019 08:59

I’m really cheered up to read I am not alone in my thoughts about this woman. That smug face, voting record and her opinions are vile. She practically skipped in to Number 10 with a superior look on her face. Surprised she didn’t cartwheel in.
We need a revolution.

jasjas1973 · 25/07/2019 08:59

Well, if that's the case, you should abhor a politician like Patel, which as pointed out just now, is what this thread is about.

Laurie, the city of London has been gearing up for this for three whole years. And whilst May was a fumbling disaster, she at least bought us time to organise ourselves. We are in the financial services, and without wishing to elaborate, all will be well. London is the largest financial capital in the world for good reason. That isn’t going to change.

LaurieMarlow · 25/07/2019 09:01

And you think the mighty EU will come to the rescue??

Yes! They have consistently backed us up internationally, particularly when Russia gets antsy.

Haven’t you noticed? Confused. I honestly despair of the ignorance of leaders.

UK military might is in decline. And you’re absolutely right to say France is strong. And guess what, it’s in the EU. Hmm

LaurieMarlow · 25/07/2019 09:02

London is the largest financial capital in the world for good reason. That isn’t going to change.

Erm, do you even know what passporting is Urban?

urbanlife · 25/07/2019 09:02

We have a revolution newton it’s happening right now. Turn on the TV is my best advice.

urbanlife · 25/07/2019 09:04

UK has a much stronger military base and our intelligence is absolutely first class. Basics that you should already know

ssd · 25/07/2019 09:05

So many horrified posts regarding the language used to describe Patel, or horror at the fact women are saying mean things about another woman.

Not one post in Patels defence, citing her excellent track record.
Wonder why?

Alsohuman · 25/07/2019 09:08

@urbanlife, sorry you haven’t noticed but this thread is about a mendacious, untrustworthy politician, not Brexit. Winning or losing are of zero relevance here. The Brexit section is that way 👉🏻

urbanlife · 25/07/2019 09:09

Most firms have already dealt with potential passporting issues by opening small operations throughout Europe. I am surprised you don’t know this. Ours is in Amsterdam for instance. Big business will not allow politics to stand in the way of profit. Even you should know that laurie

urbanlife · 25/07/2019 09:10

Ssd exactly! It’s all just more remain bile.

urbanlife · 25/07/2019 09:12

And back to the op post, how fantastic to have such and intelligent woman in one of the top jobs in the cabinet. A strong woman at that, to deal with all this diatribe aimed at her and still continue.

bellinisurge · 25/07/2019 09:12

"You should be more fucking terrified quite frankly of what happens if Brexit doesn’t happen. Trust me."

I thought we weren't supposed to give in to threats of violence. Hence the whole "NI should just get over itself and stop impeding Brexit ".
Make your fucking mind up.

bellinisurge · 25/07/2019 09:14

"A strong woman at that, to deal with all this diatribe aimed at her and still continue."
If threatening Ireland with starvation (again) is your definition of "strong "
