Do vegetarians kill flys and spiders

Just that really? Does the vegetarian philosophy only stretch to what goes into the mouth and is digested or is it goodwill to every life that has a presence on this earth?

I’m a meat eater and I don’t kill flies and spiders. Why the fuck would I? What an odd question.

julensaor · 24/07/2019 01:24

I'm a meat eater too Wonko and I don’t kill flies and spiders. Not an odd question at all. How is it odd?

WonkoTheSane42 · 24/07/2019 01:24

Because the two things have no connection to each other whatsoever.

IAskTooManyQuestions · 24/07/2019 01:27

Allegedly Hitler was a vegetarian, mind you so was Ghandi, so no idea why you think vegetarianism is a philosophy, when it is a lifestyle choice followed by the many and the varied

UterusUterusGhali · 24/07/2019 01:27

Surely depends on the person.

I eat meat but was veggie for years. Don't kill spiders. Do kill maybe two flies a year because I'm afraid of them and don't want eggs in my bin.

I know a vegan who has dispatched deer and other wildlife they've found half dead etc.

Being against factory farming and being a Jain are different things.

Topseyt · 24/07/2019 01:29

I am vegetarian.

I will kill flies and spiders. I couldn't give a shit about fly and spider welfare. Why the fuck should I? Dreadful creatures who have no place sharing a house with me.

Zippyx · 24/07/2019 01:30

Surely everyone kills general house spiders? Not as if they survive by chucking them outside anyway - they can't adapt and die - slowly.

But being a vegetarian has nothing to do with killing spiders and flies unless they plan to eat them. 😂

FurrySlipperBoots · 24/07/2019 01:33

I'm veggie and I don't kill anything.

DifficultSituation19 · 24/07/2019 01:34

I’m a vegetarian and I generally try not to kill any living thing. Although snails love to congregate on my garden path and it’s almost impossible to get up the path in the dark without hearing a crunch or two.

I’ve just started a new job and there is a terrible ant problem, and every time I go in I’ve got to spray ant killer into the nest. I feel very guilty about it though.

I will also make an exception for mosquitos. They fucking love me and I react really badly to bites. So in that case it’s survival of the fittest I’m afraid (they usually win to be fair).

Ariadnepersephonecloud · 24/07/2019 01:35

Also veggie and don't purposely kill anything. Except nits and fleas, my kids and the dog just keep bringing them home Confused

DifficultSituation19 · 24/07/2019 01:35

@Zippyx I know that’s true about house spiders, but what I want to know is...houses are a fairly recent invention in the grand scheme of things. Where did they live before then?

DifficultSituation19 · 24/07/2019 01:36

Oh yeah, nits. Forgot about them. Not sure the school would appreciate telling them it’s against my wannabe Buddhist principles to de-nit dd.

Ponoka7 · 24/07/2019 01:38

I was a Vegan.

There's no-one who faces more ethical dilemmas than a Vegan gardener.

You try to companion plant to keep pests away, but you do have to make the decision to kill things.

The aim is to just live as ethically and non exploitative.

ltk · 24/07/2019 01:42

It's not an odd question. It's stupid, or perhaps goady. But not odd. 1/5

HellonHeels · 24/07/2019 01:42

I try my best to do no harm. I make an exception for lice. I open a window for flies and ask them to leave. Thoigh if you leave the spiders.in peace they will remove the flies for you.

Ponoka7 · 24/07/2019 01:47

In regards to Hindus and Buddhists it's the intent behind the action.

So if the intention is a good one and reincarnation is a belief then killing a pest for the common good is allowed.

TwistyTop · 24/07/2019 01:49

Totally depends on the person. People are vegetarian for all sorts of reasons.

I always kill spiders in my house, but where I live the spiders can kill you, so you really wouldn't piss about trying to capture them and release them outside again. That would be really stupid. The tiny little non venomous ones are allowed to stay though. They eat those pesky flies you mentioned Grin

CardinalBurns · 24/07/2019 01:49

I'm vegetarian and do...I hate them!

Greeborising · 24/07/2019 01:52

Mmmmmm I have no hesitation in spraying a fly that’s in the house but I wouldn’t kill a spider. Maybe if flys were catchable I wouldn’t kill them 🤔
Sorry not much use here.
I’m a carnivore

DontCallMeShitley · 24/07/2019 01:53

I don't kill spiders. I don't kill flies although I don't like them. There is no need to kill them if you can persuade them to leave.

However, I draw the line at fleas and mosquitoes, carpet beetles and clothes moths. They have no right to invade my home and feast on the inhabitants or furnishings. Add woodworm to that list too.And if I am ever unlucky enough to get bed bugs there would be a war.

julensaor · 24/07/2019 01:55

Rest assured, not trying to be being goady ltk. It stems from another recent thread where vegetarians were having a go at each other about how purely vegetarian they are. So goady in a sense I guess, yes you are right. But wondering? Maybe a stupid thread to start.

TheJoxter · 24/07/2019 01:55

Clothes moths. Headlice. Mosquitos. Everything else gets left alone. I hate spiders but couldn’t kill one.

ComtesseDeSpair · 24/07/2019 01:58

But being a vegetarian has nothing to do with killing spiders and flies unless they plan to eat them. 😂

Genuinely asking - why?? For ethical vegetarians, surely their stance is about not harming living things rather than the consumption of meat per se (hence vegetarians won’t wear leather or fur or use products which have been tested in animals.) Flies I sort of understand killing because they spread disease; but spiders are lovely little helpful things and good for environmental wellbeing.

ComtesseDeSpair · 24/07/2019 02:00

And vegetarians who do kill insects - does that mean you wouldn’t have an ethical problem with eating protein sourced from insects? Again, genuinely interested.

julensaor · 24/07/2019 02:11

A lifestyle choice is different from a philosophy. I may be wrong but is vegetarianism a philosophical choice? If my lifestyle is down the gym every day for my own value, isn't it kind of condescending to say that not eating animal products is a lifestyle choice.
