Do vegetarians kill flys and spiders

Just that really? Does the vegetarian philosophy only stretch to what goes into the mouth and is digested or is it goodwill to every life that has a presence on this earth?

I'm veggie but have never killed spiders anyway. I don't mind a few around - they eat the flies which are far more annoying.

Tinprincess · 24/07/2019 09:52

I'm vegan and wouldn't kill a fly or spider. I would kill ticks/ fleas/ mosquitoes etc. I consume products with palm oil in although I'd prefer it if it wasn't used any more. People are vegetarian and vegan for all sorts of reasons and to all sorts of degree and everyone has to work out where they stand on the complex moral and ethical issues raised by living among other species. It's a personal decision and any effort to be more ethical/ healthy/ environmentally aware is something I respect. I wouldn't ever question why someone eats meat for example it's so rude to go on about what other people eat.

BossAssBitch · 24/07/2019 10:23

Vegetarian, but eat mainly a plant based diet, definitely NOT a vegan though, I kill spiders, have leather car seats, sometimes use medicines, the list is endless really.

I am a vegetarian because I am against exploiting animals for human pleasure, but if I am honest to myself, clearly I don't feel 'that' strongly about it as the dairy industry is just as cruel and exploitative as the meat industry and I am a cherry picker as I kill spiders.

I read somewhere the other day that you can only be a true animal lover if you are a vegan (and don't kill spiders). I begrudgingly agree with that statement.

CharityConundrum · 24/07/2019 10:23

I don't eat meat for a variety of reasons, and I don't generally kill non-harmful animals, but last week we had over a hundred flies in our kitchen and boiling vinegar, leaving sweet things outside and a variety of other humane methods did nothing to shift them, so I went at them with a rolled-up newspaper to stop them swarming on my kids' dinners and I have no regrets.

maddy68 · 24/07/2019 10:26

I'm a meat eater I would never kill a spider. They kill all the flies! I will kill flies as they're annoying little fuckers. And wasps are a definite gonner

BossAssBitch · 24/07/2019 10:39

I kill spiders, I have been bitten by one and I'm terribly arachnophobic. I'm a vegetarian, I eat mainly a plant based diet but am not a vegan as I sometimes eat honey, have leather car seats and occasionally use asthma medicines, the list of things I do that aren't vegan are endless.

I am vegetarian as I am against the exploitation of animals for human pleasure, but when I think about it, if I felt strongly enough about this, I would be vegan, as the dairy industry is just as cruel and exploitative as the meat industry. Plus I am a cherry picker as I kill spiders.

I read something the other day that said you cannot be a true animal lover unless you are a vegan. I begrudgingly agree with that statement.

Posted twice, damn phone

Iggi999 · 24/07/2019 10:43

No I don't - I would also open windows and try to get a wasp out rather than kill it.
But I do put ant powder down and if a slug comes anywhere near my house it's a goner. Basically if I can live along side it fine, but I don't want ants biting my dc.

Camomila · 24/07/2019 10:48

I only kill insects if they are harmful (mosquitoes etc) or if they've decided to invade my house (like the time I left a pot of honey open and found a swarm of ants in the cupboard).
Spiders get ignored if little or evicted if big.

When I was little my grandad used to kill the voles that lived in our roof...I thought it was horrible at the time but I see his point now as they chewed on wires and we had a wooden roof and lived in a forest.

PhantomErik · 24/07/2019 10:49

I'm vegetarian & no I don't kill anything if I can help it.

However I do use flea treatments on my pets (& feed them standard meat based pet food).

I don't wear leather or buy cosmetics etc containing animal products or that are tested on animals. I do use medicine when necessary.

lljkk · 24/07/2019 10:56

Vegetarianism is not a philosophy. It's a preferred way of eating that can happen for many reasons.

VioletCharlotte · 24/07/2019 11:14

I'm a vegetarian and I try not to kill any living creature. There are plenty of humane ways of dealing with spiders, etc.

I do use flea and tick treatment on the dog though.

Melassa · 24/07/2019 11:20

I love spiders and would never kill one. Flies that enter my house are “stunned” with my electric racket and gently placed outside (yes, I have seen some come round and fly away after a while) and all other insects are gently encouraged outside. The only creatures I have no pity for are mosquitoes, but I do try to make their death as quick and painless as possible Wink

Hobbesmanc · 24/07/2019 11:25

Haha. I'm veggie and I don't like intentionally killing anything so spiders etc are fine in y house- mainly because the cats tend to get the big ones anyway. I'd try and usher a fly or daddy long leg etc out of the window rather than swat it and I don't have fly spray or anything like that.

However if things are just not taking the hint and refusing to leave then they risk a rolled up paper. And sorry but wasps have only a few seconds to take advantage of the window or they are dispatched swiftly.

thecatneuterer · 24/07/2019 11:26

Vegan (more or less). Wouldn't dream of killing spiders. Try to avoid killing flies. I will reluctantly kill clothes moths and less reluctantly fleas and mosquitos.

Batqueen · 24/07/2019 11:40

It depends.

Generally I will get my dp to put the spiders outside if they are large. If small enough they can stay.

Any clothes moths can die!

Wasps can also die because they are horrible!

My difficulty is when dp isn’t around and I can’t easily get a creature out that bothers me. Then I sometimes kill it but I do feel guilty. . . At the same time I feed meat to the cat because what else is she meant to eat? I think we all just do the best we can.

boringlyboring · 24/07/2019 11:57

I’m not a vegetarian but I try not to kill unnecessarily.

I try to shoo flies out of the house instead of swatting, but if for example, there are some in the kitchen while I’m preparing food I get rid of them the quickest way I can.

Spiders on the otherhand, I just leave them be. In spring and summer there seems to be one in every corner of the house. Once, I pulled out a cabinet to hoiver behind it, and there were about 5 of them having some sort of meeting I guess, so I just hoovered around them and let them continue.

I had a load of ants coming into the kitchen last year too, and I would sweep around them so not to disturb the line. Red ants on the other hand, I do what’s necessary to not get bit as those fuckers hurt.

BumbleBeeWineGlass · 24/07/2019 16:47

I'm not a veggie but wouldn't kill a spider, flies however and their maggotty children can burn in Hell.

HopelessLayout · 24/07/2019 16:53

Dreadful creatures who have no place sharing a house with me.

You do realise that without spiders your house would be crawling with insects, don't you?

CountArthursgroupie · 24/07/2019 17:59

I'm veggie and don't, but I do kill cat fleas - and feel bad about it. But cat trumps fleas, imo.

megletthesecond · 24/07/2019 18:02

No.
I'm no longer veggie and I still avoid killing insects. I even rescue ants.

flirtygirl · 24/07/2019 18:28

I'm a vegetarian who hates most pets and will kill insects, snakes or lizards if they invade my space.

I don't follow any vegetarian philosophy. I simply don't eat meat as I think it's gross.

Don't like abattoirs or the fact that meat production is bad for the environment but these things have nothing to do with why I don't eat meat.

flirtygirl · 24/07/2019 18:37

Also don't need spiders to keep my house insect free, just use diatomaceous earth around the house instead.

Topseyt · 24/07/2019 18:48

Hopeless, yes. I do. It doesn't change my opinion, even if you find it irrational.

I always think that there should be a better way of controlling the insect population than horrendous spiders.

Try if you want, but you won't change my mind.

OooErMissus · 24/07/2019 19:22

I can't fathom why anyone would try to avoid killing flies.
